Malazan is not fearsome and it may take 1 read to get most of it, but it was a burden at certain moments. Erikkson sometimes deceives and is not so honest in my opinion. I only read Farseer from Hobb and it was a very interesting experience, low fantasy, and sometimes despairing, yes. From Eddings I enjoyed more Elenium and Tamuli, even after reading Belgariad and Mallorea, I remember them as emjoyable when I was 15-20 years younger. Hyperion cantos had some very good features but it seemed a Sci-fi wanker's dream (to me, haha) I prefer the Revelation Space (is that the name in English? don't remember the author's name) Both series have an influence on the Expanse series, but I only watched the TV one. Shattered sea is close to perfection in the concept it is intended: YA grimdark, with very nice twist in the story that none ever seems to associate with the YA books The Sword of the Spirits by John Christopher, the one of the Tripods trilogy among other YA original books from the 80-90's. Oops apologies if this comment sounds negative in general! That is what I have read from your list. Very personal opinions, I fear... Foundation is for another day... Stay well!!

Yeah there is a lot Greene hasn't read. He isn't/wasn't even aware of some fantasy staples like le guin until recently and never even heard him mention grey mouser or prydain. As far as Malazan's concerned the pressure to read everything has probably made him drag his feet on that one. Think he's only read the first three so far.

Its unbelievably ridiculous to me that Daniel Green's viewers would try to gatekeep what you can and can't talk about on your own channel. How lame can you get? I have been searching for a KZbin/Booktube fantasy content creator to replace him for a while now as I can't stand his videos. I watch them unsubscribed from time to time because I like the books and subjects he talks about, but I find him personally super irritating. I am really happy to have found this your channel as I find your videos MUCH more palatable! So please don't listen to those whiney gatekeepers, and go ahead and cover the content that he covers, if that happens to be content that you like to cover, of course. And to the gatekeepers; you don't have the right to dictate what content people make or don't make - no one should be given a monopoly on content, least of all because you demanded it.

This may come across as really sexist, it is not meant to be. The problem i have (so far) with male authors... Most struggle with intimate scenes. The problem I have with female authors (so far) most struggle writing decent/authentic action scenes. Robin Hobb, fantastic author, incredible character work.... Action, mostly happens offscreen. So, I would like to read more female fantasy but it should have decent action and for the love of what is good, less focus on the dresses the protagonist wants to wear. Any suggestions?!
@mikesbookreviews
@mikesbookreviews 4 жыл бұрын
I think stereotypes can be rude, but that don't mean they're inaccurate. I mean look at Tolkien; the MASTER world builder but just okay at action. Many times the battle happens off the pages because it wasn't his forte. So I think the criticism is valid where it applies. Very few fantasy authors can write romance. It isn't their brand. It's like asking a sous chef to make a grilled cheese; that isn't why we came. I haven't read enough female fantasy authors to give an opinion on their action sequences but I will say I think guys are just wired to focus more on the technique of writing action more than women, just as women are able to get across love and emotion better than guys. Is it a stereotype? Absolutely. Is it accurate? Well, it all depends on your POV. For me it's never meant to be a personal insult but constructive criticism of writing and prose. What clicks for some might not click for others. When I read any type of intimate scene that doesn't "fade to black" in a male-written fantasy novel, it's cringe city.

@@mikesbookreviews thanks for the reply :) I agree with you, and with Tolkien I wonder if his shying away from in your face action had to do with him being a WWI veteran and it brought back bad memories... People exaggerate Malazan, its not as confusing as people make it out to be. There will be a lot things you wont know and you wont understand the big picture for a long time but you still understand whats going on in the immediate usually. The first half of GoM is a undeniable slog but by the second half you will be plowing through. People get turned off because it doesn't have a conventional story structure, it is written like a historical geopolitical situation with many moving pieces around the world, that kind of story telling is just not for some people but it definitely is for me.

I started Elric. Moorcock is an ok writer, but I can't help but be put off by his personal views. He is an awful person. He didn't just take pot shots at Tolkien at every opportunity, but he has trashed all traditional fantasy, and anything that came before the psychedellic 60s. Pretty much, if the author wasn't under the influence of mind altering drugs, a revolutionary, or into free-love, he didn't like it. But what really turned me off was his attitude and ego. On several occasions, he has said that he (and the authors he has edited for various anthologies and magazines back in the 60s) were the first creators of genuine fantasy and science fiction. I don't know all the details, and I've been reading more articles and interviews from him of late, but he just really rubs me the wrong way (he comes across very much like Terry Goodkind, in regards to the attitude and ego).... But, like I said. The first Elric book (novel) wasn't bad. You might like it if you are a reader who can overlook the author's "quirks" in real life (and that's perfectly ok. To each his own). But I don't think the Elric book was good enough for me personally to overlook the author as a person. Just my 2 cents. PS - I know it sounds smug, and no one should hold a grudge against an author they've never met, and I know it's childish of me (but I just really like Tolkien a lot)... But at times I've wanted to yell out to Moorcock "Scoreboard!" (as I pointed to a metaphorical scoreboard comparing Tolkien's literary influence to Moorcock's). Real mature, I know.....

If you wanna break some of the heavy lifting with easy to read, kinetic quality fantasy, have a think about David Gemmell. Rigante Series is my favourite of his. The Drenai Saga is his landmark publishing achievement. There are also some standalone works that are excellent, like Dark Moon & Echoes of the Great Song. A Historical Fantasy duology of Ancient Greece, culminating with Alexander the Great in the books Lion of Macedon & Dark Prince. Like you say Mike, there’s so much out there, but the main reason I’ll re-emphasise about recommending Gemmell, is that his books are so easy to read, but imo, don’t suffer in quality comparisons with ostensibly ‘weightier’ works. I tried reading Malazan about 17-18 years ago now and I didn’t finish Gardens of the Moon, but I’m saddling up for another ride. Will be curious to see if I can keep up with you on that & compare notes. Happy Reading mate. Have been enjoying this channel for the last month or so. -g

I strongly encourage you to jump Moorcock to the head of the queue, because frankly if you (as a fantasy fan) haven't read any of the Elric books yet you're wasting your time with almost anything else. All of modern fantasy is shaped primarily from three sources; Howard's Conan, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Moorcock's Elric novels (THE origin of Grimdark fantasy). Once you've read a couple of them you'll see what I mean. Everything from D&D to Sanderson has Moorcock's fingerprints all over it. He is also a much, much better writer than most. As a bonus; many of the Elric books are pretty short compared to today's doorstop fantasy books. As far as reading order goes, there are some good omnibus editions out there that'll get you sorted.

I read the whole Multiverse cycle, and I was a fan to the core of the books, not specially his person. But his prose is different from any other thing.(He used to write in an altered conscience status, you know what I mean, the 60's the hippies and pulp writers, New Worlds...) He criticizes Tolkien but he repeats the same old fashioned archetypes of Wagnerian hero, and well don't want to spoil. I value Moorcock for being a pioneer, very original, but the genre has grown and evolved so well, that in time I don't have it in such high esteem, but a good reading anyway, sooner or later Mike may give it a try, I'm interested to watch his review and musings ...
@nemoonbekend2483

@@fernandogarcia3957 His criticism of Tolkien was wide of the mark. Tolkien deliberately set out to capture the feel of early European mythic cycles and succeeded brilliantly ( especially so with the Silmarillion). If Moorcock was unaware that he was to some extent doing the same thing, then that's certainly somewhat amusing. Two things make the Elric saga stand out for me; it's influence on the genre as a whole (some elements are copied a LOT), and the prose stylings you mention. It was (as you say) a time when Fantasy and Science Fiction writers were experimenting with unique writing "voices" all their own (Just look at Wolfe, Delany and Bradbury et al). I find that most modern fantasy writers have fallen into a very bland and standardized way of telling their tales. I am interested in Mike's thoughts on it as well, though I realize the man has a lot of books to work through first.

Mike's Book Reviews YES that’s the perfect approach, never thought of it that way. It is very fun as you get deeper in reading to start to put the pieces together even for the little things. IMO the Farseer Trilogy may be hard to get through for some people - I can't really explain why without spoiling tone at least - but I promise you the ending of Fitz and the Fool is worth the payoff, it's one of teh best endings in anything I have ever read, seen, or heard of, period. Regarding Moorcock's disparagement of Tolkien -- not revisionist history exactly, but yes it's a thing. I think it's fine that he doesn't really like lOTR -- I'm used to artists taking potshots at one another and it's ok. Not all his points are invalid but I do think he's a bit too strident. Also remember when he was writing his own fantasy series -- Tolkien's popularity was at that time (a couple of decades after publication even) exploding and suddenly all these publishers of Shanara and stuff like taht just wanted everyone to churn out mass market Tolkien-imitations. Maybe Michael resented that. He might have even been told once or twice, "hey you should write more like that guy! You would sell more books!" If you have a few extra minutes, you can read what he had to say: warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/english/currentstudents/undergraduate/modules/en361fantastika/bibliography/2.7moorcock_m.1978epic_pooh.pdf

My favourite Asimov stuff is not any of his series of novels (although Foundation and Empire is a really good book), but his short stories. You don't seem to talka bout short stories very much on your channel, and I'm guessing you prefer narratives on a grander scale. Still, much of the best and most foundational (ha ha) work in science fiction exists in the short format. As for horror, I am of the opinion that short stories are also the best format for this genre. Epic fantasy? Ok..not so much. The first Hyperion book is great. I love the structure, the way it's told -- it's just wonderful. Then the second book comes and it's -- well, i'ts ok. I don't know. I'm not much of a 'series" guy to be honest -- I don't *just* read short stories, of course, but I tend to prefer standalone books. I love Dune too, but I never got past Heretics -- same with many other series. Life's too short to read bad or boring books. And there's just too much good out there. I do suggest Moorcock. Elric is a bit pulpy, but it's a loto f fun, and the books aren't long. There's other interesting Moorcock stuff too, like War Hound and the World's Pain. Prince of nothing -- another series I never finished. Good writing though! Got Dune vibes at times, so some of this may really appeal to you.

You'll have no problem keeping me hooked through 2021 🤣 You did exaggerate the Malazan difficulties a wee bit lol A series that becomes understandable after three rereads could never be my favorite 😂 it does become _better_ with rereads. But I found it amazing first time through. It does require a bit of dedication though, because up front you need to be okay with reading 10 big books - with 15-20 additional entries for the complete story. And Gardens of the Moon is not the easiest entry you could imagine. But with Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice you get enough of the world and plot to know what's going on. In my opinion anyone who dnf's Malazan before reading the first three books hasn't even scratched the surface.

You've picked a couple of my favorite reads from the 80's. I read the first 3 books of Black Company in the mid 80's before the other books were out and have re-read them many times since then, especially during the 6 year wait from book 5 to book 6 - my first experience with a long dry spell between books in a series (I'm looking at you Jim Butcher!). Not that you need other books to read but after the first 3 books of Black Company consider reading Cook's Silver Spike to finish off one segment of the characters that don't follow the main focal character into the 4th book and beyond. It's left off Amazon's list of Black Company books and I really think it belongs there in the timeline even though the actual company moves off in another direction. If you find that you enjoy Cook you might try his Swordbearer as a stand alone easy read not related to Black Company. As other's I'm sure have told you over the years Eddings is fun and easy to read and the 12 books focusing on his world introduced in The Belgariad are easily devoured but can seem repetitious as he likes to tell stories from multiple angles. I found them all entertaining even so. You may consider one of his later books, The Redemption of Althalus as a stand alone story that's easy to read and thoroughly entertaining. Thank you for your reviews and giving me some ideas on future reads I haven't come across yet.

The only criticism I hear of Belgariad is that it's "PG." And i'm like "so is Lord of the Rings."

Mike's Book Reviews yeah, it’s PG and tropey, but eddings does incredible character work and it has some hilarious moments. The Elenium series isn’t as popular but it’s a little more adult, and just as funny.

@@stevemadden3642 I enjoyed a lot reading Belgariad and Elenium when teenager, have fond memories of them. They may at first sight look politically incorrect nowadays (not that I think so) but it may sound very West-centric at the beggining, and then Malloreon and Tamuli change the perspective, cunning Eddings! The character of Sparhawk and some friends were amazingly well conveyed!

Hi Mike! Great list! Really enjoy what you do on the channel! I'm currently going through the Greatcoates series, and really enjoying it. Hate to repeat, but The chorus of dragons is great and I believe that for 2021 it's going to be completed. The licanius trilogy is great, I finished reading it this year. The poppy war it's also great too. The farseer trilogy is good too, for me it's a little slow, but it's great to read between other series in my opinion.

I'll add Chorus of Dragons to my Goodreads. Thanks! Happy to hear about Greatcoats. Really excited about Licanius. I saw a review I trust say the series is like Malazan but more streamlined.

I read the Belgariad when I was like, 9 or 10. I absolutely loved it at the time, but I loved everything then. I'm 30 now, I'm sure I'd be more critical of it these days.

@@mikesbookreviews your reference as a palette cleanser is a good one. I'm pushing 50 and still reread the Belgariad pretty often. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for something not so grim and dark.

Excited to see the Farseer Trilogy on your list. Along with Wheel of Time, the 'realm of the Elderlings' (as the collection of trilogies- and a few side/lore stories- are apparently called) is one of those series I have gone back to re-read several times. I think the fact that the books are mainly sets of trilogies works well with the way you break up series to prevent burnout and provide variety. And despite being in the same world, the books that follow Fitz and the ones following the liveships are quite different from each other, even if they do intersect at times that feel as hype as an mcu crossover.

@@mikesbookreviews The MC's romantic interest and platonic friendship with another character are somewhat divisive and will make you arch your eyebrows at them at times, but the adventure, the highs and the lows, do standout without being grimdark. The MC goes through a lot, and the struggle is very compelling.
