You have no idea how much I needed this video. It made me feel validated in loving my dog despite his reactivity. Every time I go out I worry that something could go wrong if a dog gets too close or someone approaches without asking and I know he'll react. My dog is the sweetest most well behaved dog INSIDE, but there are so many things that scare him outside, and when he gets that way people see him as threatening and it makes me feel like I'm being an irresponsible dog owner. I wish I could say I've never doubted that I'm doing the right thing by keeping him, but it gets hard when something happens outside of my control. I love my dog dearly and it helps to know that other people have the same issues. Thank you.

I'm so glad this video helped you! Life with a reactive dog is really something only other people who have been through it will understand. It is taxing and draining and exhausting and overwhelming. I promise you are not alone in your frustrations and doubts about whether you should even have him -- totally normal. You are doing a great job and your pup is very lucky to be in your life!

Thank you so much for this. I feel so validated and glad that my dog isn’t the only one who has this issue. It’s emotionally draining and I dread going on walks with her because she pulls and doesn’t like strangers, especially men. She’s a rescue and I’m not sure what she went through before so it makes it that much harder.

Same! I feel exactly the same! Hope does NOT like men and people are afraid of her on walks! I have 6 cats and just adopted Hope 4 months ago ... and she loves to walk but she reacts to dogs and especially men. She is the sweetest dog! But people are afraid of her and I think they think maybe I can't handle her because I'm not a very big person. So here I am out walking with a near 70 pound black shepherd mix and she goes nuts at a person or a dog ... She is recovering faster now though after a lot of work ... and we have another dog that we adopted a week ago from the same hoarding situation (but much younger).

Thank you sooo much for not just talking about handling your reactive dog, but also the emotional aspect and perspective of being her human. It made me cry because “you get it” and I don’t feel so alone in my training journey with my reactive yorkie (who thinks she’s a doberman in a yorkie body😂). Everything you talk about is genuine, especially acceptance of your dog and yourself. Blessings to you and Remy!

It's SO hard having a reactive dog. Just know you absolutely are not alone - there are MANY folks going through the same thing. It took me quite some time to accept Remy for himself, but now that I've made peace with Remy not being perfect, I'm a lot more able to work on the close-range goals and celebrate our small victories.

This is the most honest dog training video I’ve come across. Managing expectations with my 8 year old Pit is key. Dealing w dog reactivity has beee frustrating for me to deal with. What you said resonated... I have to be ok with the fact that she wont be THAT type of dog lol its hard to accept...I see other owners with their dogs frolicking around and its hard not to be jealous. My Genesis is a great dog, but she is just requiring more training and time. Thanks for your update...I really needed it!!

Thank you for the kind words, I’m so glad you feel this way. Being honest about the struggles of having a dog w behavior issues is definitely one of my goals for the channel. I think so many people end up confused, frustrated, and embarrassed - I really want people to realize they’re not alone and having a difficult dog can still be a rewarding experience (and doesn’t reflect negatively on you)

It was hard for me too to accept my dog will not be a dog park pup, he won't be able to go to breweries or hang out at friends' houses. It's a bummer for sure, but he's still a great boy at home and a good companion.

I adopted my first dog 6 weeks ago. She is six years old and a frustrated greeter. She is also still working out new home anxiety. I binge watched dog training videos and found some great tips, but nothing quite as realistic as yours. I so appreciate how you take us on a walk and point out what to look for and what to reward on a normal walk. It was truly information that I took on my walk today and I felt so empowered. We came across a dog doing it's business, and instead of gritting my teeth and hurrying around it, we stopped and I let her watch the dog. Then I would ask her to look at me and reward when she did. I increased the time between calling her, and if she didn't respond, I knew to back up a little. We were able to observe for about 5 minutes and then I could tell her spoons were depleting, so we headed home. I was so proud of her, and me. Your approach has also given me new insite on her behavior at home. I live in a townhome with sliding glass doors that face a common area and other backyards. Yelling at her to stop barking has been fruitless. Hahaha. Keeping her from enjoying the view has also been not an option. I can't prevent her from barking, but I can come to the door, stand with her, get her attention, reward, and then work on desensitizing her to the bunnies, squirrels, dogs, excercisers, etc. This feels so much more productive. I've been so afraid of accidently rewarding bad behavior, that I haven't set her up for "good enough" success. You also show it's ok to let her "dog", which is a piece I was missing from the other training videos. Your videos have really improved my relationship with my dog. I'm so grateful!

Your comment absolutely means the world to me -- I found it very moving. That's really what I am trying to have this channel be all about -- helping pet parents look at their dogs a bit differently and improve their relationship (especially with more challenging pups). As well as question some of the pre-conceived notions that we get caught up in with regards to what a "good dog" looks like vs a "bad dog". It sounds like you are already doing so well! I am glad you are proud of your dog's progress as well as your own, because you absolutely should be. Thanks again for commenting. Like I said, it means a lot.

@@K9ofMine How do you take a break from managing a reactive dog? I live in a dog-friendly apartment and I regularly run into other dogs when taking mine out for potty breaks - sometimes three or four dogs in one trip! I have an American Akita and there’s really not a lot of videos about then online. She’s become very reactive on leash, would not take treats outside, would rather sniff the ground at all times no eye contact, would lounge and bark at mostly people. We consulted quite a lot of trainers and they’ve concluded it’s due to lack of socialisation at that golden age of puppy. Wish I could’ve paid more attention and avoided the situation we’re in but it was around the peak of covid when going out wasn’t an option I’m now putting everything I’ve got in order to just have a proper and good walk with her 😭 it’s really tough at time that it makes me cry most days so thank u for being a light in this situation.

Ouch, the COVID thing is what happened with my now-reactive GSD. Got him right around the time that noone even wanted to leave their house and go outside. Then on top of that, even being around people they were all afraid and avoidant just because of the fact that he's a GSD, which I guess most people think are "scary." Now he's just suspicious and fearful of all humans and animals. Even worse, he was attacked by another dog when he was a young puppy in the hallway of our apartment building, twice. Once someone opened their door right as we were walking by, dog ran out anf immediately bit my GSD. Then another time someone came around the corner from the stairway door and their dog but him.

I’m so glad you posted this; I needed to see it. 6 weeks ago I adopted a Plott Hound from a shelter. I’ve had a Plott before but that one and my current are similar in some ways and night and say different in others. My first was Plott mixed with a European lab and, evidently, had the lab’s personality (sweet, snuggly, friends with everybody) but had the Plott’s intelligence. My current Plott is 100% Plott - temperament, reactivity, difficulty to train. Like your Remi (hopefully, I spelled that correctly), unfortunately I don’t think my current Plott is going to be everybody’s best friend, which isn’t what I wanted and and it breaks my heart.

I'm sorry, and I'm with you! It's so tough when we realize the dogs we have aren't going to be the dogs we dreamed of. Definitely let yourself mourn that loss, because it really does stink. I was pretty stuck on how different Remy was than the dog I wanted for probably an entire year! Eventually, you'll want to reflect on what really matters to you in a dog. I thought I needed a dog-friendly dog, but honestly I can't say that has really ended up mattering all that much to me (especially because dog parks aren't really great to take your dog to anyway, regardless of reactivity). Hang in there, it really does get better! I'd also suggest considering exploring dog sports -- that could be a super fun thing for you and your Plott to do together! Nosework especially could be a really great enrichment activity that also can help you two bond! Best of luck, we're rooting for you!

Reactivity is really tough! Definitely don’t get down in yourself, I know how stressful it can be. Just hang in there and celebrate your small wins - those rare days when you see a dog and your pup stays calm. And if you’re really struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out to a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) - a very specific certification- or a Veterinary Behaviorist.

Okay, your comments about our dogs being unique and Remy’s reactivity teaching you how to manage expectations of other people literally made me tear up. I never considered that expecting a well-mannered and near perfect dog was a reflection of expectations I have for others and myself. While I want to work on Nimbus’s leash reactivity, I also have to learn how to love him for who he is instead of trying to “fix” him. I suppose that’s the posture we ought to assume when enter into every relationship, be it with an animal or person. I came for dog training suggestions but left with newfound revelations about to better interact with and love those around me and myself. Thank you

I'm so glad my and Remy's experience was helpful to you! :) I think it it definitely still behooves us to work on our dogs's reactivity. The difference is that previously I wanted to resolve his reactivity because I found it annoying, embarrassing, and frustrating. But now my goal is to lessen his reactivity simply so that we can do more fun things together. I've also become so less stressed about his reactive behavior after accepting it as just "one of his quirks" rather than some huge issue that needed to be resolved. We still do counter conditioning work every day, but if and when Remy goes over threshold and lunges, I'm able to just laugh it off, roll my eyes, and move on. I know my dog is so much more than just his situationally reactive behavior. Wishing you all the best with Nimbus (and what an adorable name)!

It can definitely be an unexpected surprise with many rescues! I'd encourage you to take it nice and easy. Consider opting out of dog parks (which can be stressful or even dangerous due to the large mix of dogs with no oversight) and instead try to find well-matched playmates, or a trainer-run play group where there is supervision over the dogs. A certified force-free trainer is also not a bad idea either to work out any kinks in your training plan!

So useful to see what your experience has been and thank you for sharing! The community of owners working with reactive dogs has a wealth of knowledge, and has been a huge help to me, so I'll share some of my own! I had a similar, but also opposite experience from yours: we moved from an apartment to a less dense single family home neighborhood. We still see plenty of dogs, but they no longer jump out from any corner with no room for escape. It's been a huge help! Also, I've been told that cortisol can stay in the system for 3 days, so a low-spoon day (trigger stacked dog) may mean you have less spoons the next couple of days as well. I just give us a couple of "easy days" after an exciting one. I've worked with a few trainers all with similar, but different, approaches. Some have worked better for us than others. Every dog is unique, so listening to your dog and learning what works for them is key!

I needed this. Thank you for showcasing a real life dog in a real life situation with real life ups and downs while training with positive re enforcement. I have been training with my dog for the better part of a year on her reactivity, I figured our move would help but it actually made things worse. I realized there was alot I was doing right but also alot of I was doing wrong. I couldn't understand why sometimes she was fine and other times she'd lose her mind. Turns out I wasn't really listening to her triggers, not incentivizing her the right way, and couldn't control my OWN anxiety. I've come to terms with the idea that my dog will probably never be chill and that's fine, as long as she can be safe.

Thank you so much...I needed to see this video. We have a 4 yr old reactive (rescue) border collie lab mix. It's been a trying five months, but we're making progress. I keep reminding myself to be patient, consistent and have compassion. I've taken a few cues from this video and look forward to applying them to our walks. Most of all, your Zen of encouragement toward the end...thank you for "seeing" us. Namaste.

Aw thank you, that means a lot. I see you because I'm right there with you! I think what made the biggest impact on my relationship with Remy was really being willing to celebrate the small wins, even if they don't seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things. A reaction-free walk, even if we have to stay several yards away from triggers, is a serious win in our book, and I make sure to tell Remy what a great job he did :)

Don’t beat yourself up! No one has any right to judge you - especially if they’ve never had a reactive dog before! I will admit many years ago if I saw a dog that barked and lunged at other dogs I would think the owner was not responsible. Of course now, knowing what I know about how challenging reactivity can be, I feel nothing but sympathy for other owners in this position. It is easy for others to judge but they really have no idea what it’s like to work with a reactive dog. Just keep track of your own progress and take pride in your steps forward, even if they are small! Every improvement counts. Good luck!

I recently had my dog reactive dog stay with a trainer at her home. She runs a very small board and train (2 dogs) and has her own dogs. The board and train dogs were in a separate part of her home but she did work on socializing my dog with her dogs- which I really appreciated. It was expensive but I thought if I was going to pay for him to be anywhere, I wanted someone who could help me improve his quality of life, and to give me the skills to keep helping him. It was a great experience. I really appreciate your videos and love the engage disengage game!

This helps me sooooo much! Thank you! I adopted Hope 4 months ago. She came from a Hoarding situation and at first was so afraid to even go outside. As she got comfortable with me she was excited to go out for walks! But now she is extremely leash reactive to other dogs (and some people). Ironically, she is fine off-leash in a dog park. We also adopted Faith, another dog from the same hoarding situation, a week ago. She cries when she sees other dogs. Sometimes I feel like I have my hands full and I just want to do the right thing for them. I have been working with them separately and together. But there are times when I am so frustrated! Your video helped me to know that what all three of us are going through is okay. We will get there, or wherever it is that we can manage. I think Faith will be the dog everyone can pet (she is just a year old and came into the shelter with puppies on board!) but Hope is 7 and has that many years of abuse in her life. People are afraid of her when we walk (Shepherd / Border Collie mix (we think) ) because of her extreme reactions. .... I do corrections with treats and I do need to learn to also better manage my own emotions. She was recently attacked by another reactive dog (who was unleashed) -while we were walking-, who ran across her lawn, across the street and to us. That dog locked onto Hope and I hit that dog with my gloves . Finally she released but gave poor Hope a huge bite into her hip. The vet treated her and that dog's owner paid my vet bill. ... But not sure if that helped Hope's reactivity to other dogs. I love them both so much and they challenge me in good ways. I think dogs (especially rescues) help us to Hope for the best and accept what we cannot control, and have Faith in the Lord, who sees more than we are capable of knowing or seeing.
@K9ofMine

On behalf of Faith and Hope, thank you so for working so hard with them! I know it can be really, really tough. You are doing your best to help them, and that's all anyone can ask! In the last year I have really focused on just managing Remy's reactivity and making sure he can enjoy his life. Some dogs are never going to fully get over their reactivity and that's OK. I 100% agree that challenging dogs can teach us so much about accepting what's out of our control and loving them for the imperfect mess they sometimes are!

Makes a lot of sense to me, particularly the trigger stacking part. We have the most amazing adventures, real Enid Blyton type stuff just me and an incredible (to me) dog and on the way back to more populated areas and home, we're on a countdown of squirrels, bumble bees, blokes cycling past and it adds up QUICKLY. Many a fun day ends with a squabble 2 minutes from home, I feel silly trying to explain to someone "sorry mate he's not bad, we just had a squirrel dropping twigs on our head, and then someone had a noisy car...". I've never heard someone else put it into words, very interesting video thank you

Loving and accepting Remy for who he is has taught me so much about how I manage appropriate expectations not just for him but all my important relationships. Now we work to improve his behavior issues not because I feel he is a bad dog, but because altering some of his behavior would allow him to experience more of the world with me! However, if it ends up he will be largely an at-home dog, that's OK too.

This video has been saved me and Deidre! Last May we rescued a little terrier mix that is super reactive. We almost didn’t take her because of her reactivity but her owner wanted to “get rid” of her because she was “obnoxious, nasty, yappy, whiny & wanted too much attention!”. I took her because I didn’t have the heart to see her sent to another shelter. And because she is only 17#. But she is 17#’s of spinning, lunging, gyrating, thrashing, choking berserk behavior. My biggest fear is she will get eaten since she’s so little & has been able to escape several harnesses & collars. She will charge the other dog, but once she gets near she usually just runs in circles around the dog barking. So far, thankfully she stays out of reach. We live in a small neighborhood with many dog walkers & many people who allow their dogs off leash. Thankfully she’s never escaped by an off leash dog. We ARE making progress but it’s been very very slow. I’m 71 & have had dogs all my life. But I’ve never had a dog that has been reactive. With COVID I’ve had a hard time finding a trainer. No one is seeing people for private lessons & I just don’t see how you can have a Zoom training with a leash reactive dog - Much less be able to afford it. Trainers in my area are charging $125-400 an hour. My husband and I are both retired and on a limited income and there’s no way we can afford that so I’ve been scouring You Tube. I’m making progress with what I’ve learned but until I saw your video today I didn’t realize what I’ve been doing wrong. I am so thankful for people like you who are sharing their stories and training tips. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I can see I’ve been expecting too much from her too soon, not yummy enough treats, allowing her to focus for too long or not being able to break her focus. Even with all my mistakes 3 steps forward and 2 steps back. With what I’ve learned from your two videos with Remmy maybe now it will be three steps forward and one step back. I’m going to watch all your videos!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!

Thank you for working so hard with her - I know how hard having a reactive dog can be and I think it's incredibly kind and compassionate that you took her knowing beforehand she was reactive. She is so lucky to have you! You are so right that reactivity is often progresses in a non-linear way. There will always be good and bad days. Your dog will improve and you'll also become better at reading her body language and assessing her threshold as you work together. It means so much that this video gave you hope, that's definitely what I wanted to do with it! Best of luck with Deirdre :)

This video has given me so much insight into what I can do to help my dog. She is a 1yr old Cane Corso and was in training to be my service dog, but due to the pandemic she ended up going through a major fear period and we weren't able to go out and train during it at all, which has led to a ton of uncertainty and fear reactivity. While I am a balanced trainer, 90% of what I use is R+ and I was struggling to find any information that I would be able to implement into my own training, and that set realistic expectations. I hope you and Remy are doing well, and keep up all the great work!

So glad I came across your video. Your dog, Remy is absolutely adorable!! Glad to hear he is also a pro cuddler. My dog, Barney, is a rescue from the streets of Rosarita, Mexico. I rescued him when he was about 3 yrs of age. (pretty much a guess). Lord only knows what his past experiences were like. He is a reactive dog...to some dogs, cats, small critters, etc.. I really liked your video because you supported what I have been working on, as far as leash reactivity. Barney is also reactive when we are in the car. I never know which dogs, or humans, passing by, or working on the side of the road, he will react to. He seems really selective, and I have not figured out a common denominator. I'm wondering if the reactive leash training, will also help, with the reactive behavior he exhibits in the car?? ideas? suggestions? I guess I will just have to wait and see...
@K9ofMine

Aw Barney is a lucky guy! Sounds like you’re doing great work with him. As far as reactivity in the car, it might be worth considering having your dog in the back and putting shade curtains up to block the view - it might help from preventing him from seeing stuff outside and reacting. While I think your general leash reactivity work would work fine in the car, unless you have another person in the car doing it, I think it would be a major distraction / driving hazard to try to attempt that while driving!

Omg thank you, I have 2 rescued dogs that are very reactive, I don’t have good sight and sometimes they see the dog before me and all comes crashing down, my dogs had bitten me from redirected aggression, and is so frustrating, because I love outdoors and hikes and can’t take any of my dogs because there is always other dogs, it bums me out so much and I feel guilty when I go hiking and I don’t take my dogs, I’m just so frustrated and defeated, glad you acknowledge that is mentally frustrating for the owners too
@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 3 жыл бұрын
That's really hard! I definitely know how disappointing it can be when your dog can't do the activities your dreamed doing with them. :( But try not to feel guilty! Truthfully, a lot of reactive dogs feel stressed outdoors in strange situations or around strange dogs, and it's worth remembering that your dog probably doesn't want to go out on those hikes. They may be perfectly content and happy at home, and prefer that, in fact! I've definitely tried to separate more in my mind what I want from my dog vs what he wants. And while my dog Remy gets excited about new adventures, he also gets very overwhelmed and over-aroused. I know he will not be calm or enjoy certain outings. So, I'd simply say enjoy your hikes without your dogs, and when you get home you can engage in activities that the doggos enjoy! I know it may not be what you had planned on for your life with your dogs, but it doesn't make the reality wrong or bad, just different than what might have been expected.

5:03 I'm struggling a little to discern the difference between bribing the dog and rewarding and reinforcing desired behavior with treats
@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 9 ай бұрын
Great question and it can definitely be a nuanced one! A bribe would be if you have to show your dog the food item / reward in order for them to comply. A reinforcer is something you only show and give after the behavior has been performed. I do think it’s a bit more grey when dealing with reactivity - because treat scatters and magnet hands are so powerful for focusing your dog and helping them calm down, I’m not sure it really matters so much if the item is a “bribe” or a reinforcer as long as you are getting your dog into a calm state where they can stay under threshold. But I would say the goal - especially with trick training or cues - is to not have the treat out and visible before you’ve clicked or given the marker word (like “yes”). This is why having a treat pouch and getting your treat handling down can be really important! Suzanne Clothier has a really interesting article detailing this too: suzanneclothier.com/article/rewards-lures-bribes/

I like to think of it like a job and a paycheck. At first when you receive a job offer, the boss tells you what she'll need from you, and then tells you what you'll receive from her for completing the job. Similarly, we have to give the dog a job offer first. Tell them what we're looking for, and what we're willing to offer. I won't say either of those scenarios involve a bribe, it's just establishing expectations. Once you've been doing the job, trust is established that you will do the work, and your boss will provide the paycheck. Same with dogs. Once they understand what we are asking of them, trust is established between both sides to hold up their end of the bargain. Dog does behavior, I give treat. Still, I wouldn't consider that a bribe. Where it becomes a bribe is this: Imagine going in to work, sitting down, and then refusing to work. Then your boss has to come around, pull out a wad of cash, and plead with you to do the job. THAT is a bribe. Same with dogs. If they've already established that they understand the job, but they won't do it unless you show them the money, NOW you're bribing. Of course if that happens, it usually means that the dog has learned that the boss can't be trusted to hold up their end of the deal, OR they believe that they're being seriously underpaid for the work being asked. Like the above comment, it's more nuanced than that, but my clients seem to click with this explanation.

So, my dog has had 5 reactivity incidents today alone. We haven't been on a walk in 3 days because I can't get her out of my apartment without: 1. Her reacting to someone in the elevator 2. Her reacting to someone or another dog in the lobby 3. Her reacting to dogs that pass by our building. I know this means she is "out of spoons". She needs to exercise but we can't even go out because now every little stimulus sets her off. Your video really put things into perspective - my dog is way too reactive for me to continue living in this busy apartment complex. The environment is making her reactivity worse - we can't avoid dogs, people and other triggers because as soon as I get in the elevator or in my lobby there's at least 2 dogs and 5 people there. I'm so exhausted.

I used to live in a dog-friendly apartment complex with Remy and thank GOODNESS we were on the 3rd floor, because we'd just use the stairs (which rarely had people or dogs in it). I don't think it would have been possible if we had to use the elevator. Some folks in a similar situation might resort to taking their dog out at really odd times of the day when there will be less people around (like super early in the morning or super late at night). I wonder if it would be possible for you to relocate to a unit that is floor level or closer to floor level for easier access? Ugh you're in a tough spot, I totally understand. I know plenty of folks who have had to deal with similar arrangements, it's really hard. A duplex, single-family home, or a less populated apartment unit might be the ideal option.

Boy can I relate! We have a 2 year old reactive golden retriever. We are learning together.. Our first golden was the perfect dog for beginners, our 2 nd golden was crazy now our 3rd dog is over the top. Thank you for the video. Love the tips.

I imagine it must be tough having a reactive golden as so many folks consider them the epitome of safe and approachable dogs. I'm sure you have many people that come barreling towards you often! While it makes me sad sometimes I admit it's nice that most people naturally give Remy plenty of space as a pittie mix!

Ever since a dog attacked him he hates all dogs. We also have a stupid neighbor kid that poked him with sticks so he hates kids too. I've talked to the parents and the kid stopped.

Hello from the uk 🇬🇧 my Kevin was so chilled on walks, walks to heel and was generally fine on his lead until recently now he whines all around his walk and when he sees a dog he cry’s and then frustration barks and lungs. I know he’s physically fine with dogs because he goes doggy daycare and loves playing with others. But it’s become so frustrating so thank you for uploading this.

Aw poor guy. I know it’s so hard when you can’t go let them say hi! You’re doing the right thing though, as over-excited greeters can freak out the other dog and it can cause issues. Aiming for calm is definitely best!

This is a lovely video please keep doing them he’s a lovely dog how old is he and how old was he when he came to you ? I have a 1 year old American bully I’ve had him since he was 7 weeks old , with COVID-19 going on we have mist out on socialising , and I’ve always taken him out some were quiet for walks in the car which I know now wasn’t a good idea as my cars broken so we have to walk in busy area and he’s acting stressed out with everything around us , he used to drop to the floor when seeing dogs but after 2 weekends of being sedated in the vets for his ear infection last night we walked around a corner and 2 dogs across the road started barking at him and he went mental barking and pulling at them ! It shocked me and left me upset as he’s never done it before . I’ve now booked us a dog trainer for when restrictions are lifted but I feel like I have failed him I’ve not been the good leader he needed or something . I didn’t want to take him out again through fear of it happening again but we went out not long ago and we did really well saw a little dog he just sat down and watched it without me telling him to do it . Your words at the end were so good to hear made me feel so much better thank you . I will now try to not dwell over the bad days and hope for a better day the next time x

Thanks for the kind words Emma! Remy is 3.5 and I've had him since he was 2. Reactivity can definitely be tough to deal with. It sounds like he's developed a fear of other dogs - the crouching is often a response to fear, as is the escalating lunging and barking. The good news is that this doesn't have much to do with your leadership and has more to do with his own fears associated with other dogs. Some basic desensitization and counter-conditioning will go a long way (you can start by just keeping your distance to other dogs and giving him treats when he sees other dogs to create a positive association). It's great you're enlisting the help of a trainer but do be careful - there are MANY unqualified people out there using inhumane training strategies that can really do dogs more harm than good - especially with reactive dogs. Avoid folks who suggest using prong collars or e-collars with a reactive dog and opt for a force-free or LIMA trainer. Good luck!

@@K9ofMine thank you for your reply , he won’t take treats off me at all out of the house even hot dogs or chicken . We have been back out and just turned a different direction if I see a dog which I’m not sure if I’m making it worse like we are running away but if a dog was across the road he pulling towards it and I’m struggling to move him so end up kind of dragging him in desperation to get away as I’m embarrassed . A couple of weeks ago I took him to a place were there are lots of dogs being looked after and they have enclosed pens so he was one side of the fence to see how he would act and he seamed really good wagging his tail and not trying to bite and there was no raised heckles but I’m not expert in dog language to me it seamed like he was just desperate to play but we didn’t let him play we just wanted to see how he was responding to being near to dogs in a safe way at first . That went really well , but now we are out walking on the busy streets with so many dogs around us he’s not coping as well . He doesn’t walk nicely on his lead at all and I have to keep him as close to me as I can or he’s really dragging me if he gets to far ahead . I give him a longer lead if we go some were open and quiet . He’s used to quieter places and seams more comfortable but with no car for over a week it’s getting difficult for me to want to go out . People keep saying he is taking you for a walk I feel so stupid like they think I shouldn’t even have him as I can’t handle him . Even my friend is saying are you going to keep him , of course I’m going to keep him I love him and want to try work to get into a better place with him I just need some help . Trying to find a good trainer is the hard part , the trainers around me are all positive so that’s good as the only thing I see on KZbin with big powerful dogs are prongs etc . That’s made me think is that the only way to help with a big powerful dog but I’d not want to hurt or frighten my dog I’d never harm a hair on his body . Do you recommend any front clip harness as I need a new one ours is getting too small which one do you use ?

Amazing video! What you said at the end of it made me laugh and cry. I've been with my reactive dog for 5 years but I'm still having trouble dealing with her reactivity and sometimes gets disappointed. Your remarks made me think and somewhat comforted me.. Thanks! Well I was wondering if Remy had no reacitivy on leash from the start? I am working on leash pulling but she's too excited to walk on loose leash even when we walk in our neighborhood.

I totally understand Kay! Remy has made such great progress since I got him two and a half years ago, but his reactivity is still something we have to manage regularly. Remy wasn't initially leash reactive when I first adopted him, partly due to the fact that I'd let him approach other dogs (when I absolutely shouldn't have due to his arousal level). Nothing ever happened, and I even brought him to the dog park a few times, but I noticed him getting more mouthy as he decompressed and got settled in to a home life. That's when his reactivity started to really become a serious issue (along with a host of other bad behaviors that only came out once Remy was settled outside of shelter life). It took me a while to get Remy to walk loose on the leash too, as he also gets very excited and extremely stimulated outdoors. Check out our video on loose leash walking too! Using those techniques Remy has gotten a lot better. I can't say he's perfect but our walks are MUCH more enjoyable now!

Thank you for making this video! I'm so glad I found your channel. This is my first time having a reactive dog and he is reactive to both humans and dogs. It's so frustrating/hard/ tiring to the point where I feel like maybe I need to rehome him to a farm or a forest somewhere where there isn't anything or anyone to make him be this stress. What happen if you call his name or use a clicker and he is still staring at the dog/person and not you?

@K9ofMine 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I'd just use whatever your dog finds motivating/rewarding. If your dog really loves being praised, you can use that. I know some owners of non-food-motivated dogs have great success with toys too! Heck, even a good belly rub or butt scratch can be used if your dog really loves touch.

This is great, I live in a super urban area where there’s always dogs everywhere and sometimes I can’t change directions because I will run into other dogs and my dog gets super reactive and lunges and barks when we cross paths on the same sidewalk. My dog pulls like crazy and won’t take any treats from the second we start walking though so I’m afraid this strategy might be too advanced for him. What do you recommend I do? I don’t have a yard or anywhere I can take him to practice.

That is definitely a tough situation. Truthfully, you're going to have to work extra hard to keep him below his threshold. Since it's hard to get distance on those urban sidewalks, I'd say try to make use of trees, trash cans, and parked cars as barriers. I'd also suggest making an effort to only walk your dog during times of the day when you are less likely to encounter other dogs, so you can at least manage where and when you practice training. If you have a car, I'd recommend driving to quieter walking paths or parks where you can get more distance.

@@K9ofMine i apreciare the response! I usually do a morning walk because I work from 9-5 and wouldn’t have time to walk him again until after work. There’s usually a dog walking on almost every side walk so I’ve had to use alleys. My dog is also reactive to people as well. Everytime he sees an unfamiliar person he gets triggered. He’s usually really good when we’re at dog parks, very social and doesn’t get into confrontations. It’s just with the leash. I just switched to an easy walk harness and he still pulls
@K9ofMine
@K9ofMine 3 жыл бұрын
@@kslovexoxo Using alleys is a great way to get extra distance! You may also want to walk really early (like 6am or earlier) to avoid busy dog-walking times. Unfortunately, super late walks and super early ones are what many reactive dog owners are forced to resort to! Some dogs are fine off-leash but reactive on-leash. Being on a leash can be kind of scary for some dogs because they have no escape and feel more trapped and nervous. You could definitely work on loose leash walking too, as that could make your walks a bit easier, but honestly I didn't even bother working on loose leash walking with Rem until I felt the reactivity was more manageable. It can be hard to work on so many things at once. I'd say work on whatever issue seems more pressing or is more stressful for you first.
