1) write a list of all parts needed for all cars in family 2) use Rockauto to cross reference parts on other models 3) write down row location of all cars and color (sorento 20b white) 4) get spare bulbs/fuses/bolts/trim clips for all family cars and put in tupperware for each car 5) grab custom mats, trunk liners, mud guards 6) check for extra tire - you never find one when you need it 7) start with wrecked car if you need engine or transmission 8) if brakes are new, grab pads/rotors/caliper 9) rub hands in vaseline and get in knuckles/under nails before going (blocks grease for easy cleanup) 10) charge phone (for searching and flashlight) 11) give yourself lots of extra time 12) bring water 13) explain to your wife that it is just something you need to do

Bring wasp/hornet spray too, I've been stung several times, also bring gloves and be careful where you stick your hands, nasty ass people hide needles blades syringes all sorts of shit in vehicles in these yards :(.

My peeve is leaving the hoods up on a car you popped a carb/intake/valve cover off of so the rest of it seizes up in the weather. Like, just lower the damn hood!

Occasionally, I'm usually the idiot that forgets them, left a zipper pouch of sockets and adapters in a Ford Explorer, went back the next day, yep of course they were gone...that's why I take my Harbor Freight stuff to pick a part yards, if I forget it, break it, or lose it no huge loss LOL.

Tip: Bring a step-stool, they're up on rims upon rims, so getting into the engine can be a climb!

here is my tip, use the old door speakers to keep your screws/bolts and nuts together, the magnet keeps them all together and wont spill like a cup or tray.

Not so. Old speakers (depends on how old, of course) are usually heat-damaged or water-damaged. OEM speakers are often crap anyway. Exceptions to every rule, of course, and YMMV.

The 97-01 Camrys have 4 bolts that remove the center console, then the tray pops out and you end up with a nice little box to carry your stuff; that's what I use since those are always at my yard and are super easy to remove.

I use a cambelback water system, hands free, and works very well, usually plenty of water for a day out on the lot...very rarely out there for more than a couple hours anyways. Great tip though. Our pick a part yards sell bottled water for $1 a bottle...only in the US do we fill plastic bottles with tap water and sell them.

Saturn Ions have a big fat cable running to the rear battery. It is really easy to pull out and use for large accessories It's like 12 feet of 4awg..

I live on the space coast, Florida. lately I have notice that the yards have gone to a computer pricing. Most of the time they are quoting prices that are darn near what the parts stores are charging. I been walking away from the yards more and more and buying new parts from, ( my favorite is Auto Zone), parts store. Even little things like a tire iron. One yard in cocoa wanted to charge me $35 for the entire jack assembly. I said "its just the tire iron i found in the dirt". The guy looked at his computer and said "$35". I took it back, dropped it in the dirt where I found it and walk out of the yard. Haven't been back since. I have found most of the yards are like this now. SUCK'S.

I have a yard around here that asks way too much for parts. They don't use computers or lists, they just pull a price out of their butt and it's almost always just a shy cheaper than new. I don't go to them, of course. If I have to go out and pull the part myself, and it's a used part of unknown quality, that price better be worth it or I'll just buy new.

And hey, sometimes you can get stuff from Pull A Part for free without stealing - a couple times I showed the cahier what I had & she let me go on out without paying anything - one time with a bunch of bolts I needed to hold a gas tank shield on & another time I had about 5 small rubber pieces (little door bumps). So yeah - sometimes things are free - at least in Birmingham, AL!

I've done that a few times as well, usually fasteners related to a part I pulled, lug nuts, seat belt bolts. Usually all very small parts not worth their time entering into the computer is most likely why they do that.

I usually pocket the mounting bolts, nuts, and screws. Some of those are special made just for that application and are not available at your local Home Depot or Ace Hardware. You never know when you'll need them.

Secret pro tip: invest in a harbor freight lug master key set, then you'll be the only one in the yard that can remove those nice 22's or custom 18's rims with the weird lug lock. 😀

This video is great vintage Bleepinjeep! Lately, there have been some fairly off topic things. And the Scorpion Crawler videos are great, but much of it isn't applicable for many of us. But I love this straightforward, helpful stuff. I hit the U Pull frequently, but I hadn't thought to use brake fluid for penetrating oil, use a cordless drill battery to test electronics, or grab spare wire from a van. Almost forgot my favorite tip. Hide parts for later purchase. I've hidden all kinds of cool stuff in less desirable cars and baught them when I had the money. Only look at the date car was set on the line and pick the earliest possible in a less desirable car. I hide important stuff in the domestic section vice-versa.

Good vid Matt. In my area though: 1. All fluids are drained 100% before they go out 2. Whats a cleanup crew? I think there are more parts and broken glass on the ground than in the vehicles.

they do drain all the fluids, (not sure about the brake fluid) but you'll still be able to find some in the pockets where it wasn't able to drain out.

The mod videos are great, but I really appreciate the more basic videos as I'm a total newb when it comes to auto repair and maintenance. I have a 1996 XJ that I have had for eight years without having to repair much. (I have replaced the harmonic balancer and the starter.) But it needs some TLC, and your channel will be great information and inspiration as I start working on it. (It needs a paint job, and I may copy your Hope Floats colors.) MY local yard is so subclass compared to P-a-P. Its really muddy after a light rain and so many selfish tools tearing up the stock to get what they need and every vehicle interior is trashed out. I also have to avoid the days the wind blows from the northeast because its right across the highway from a feed lot. The smell gets horrible!

If I was gonna add anything to that it would be to do homework on your particular vehicle because some are Interchangeable with other years or makes or models. helps out huge. Also we have a number of wreckers in our area all fighting for customers so bartering at the desk helps huge. I can't believe how many times I've walked away with parts and almost didn't even pay for em. Calling in advance can save you time too. Bring tools that do a lot of other jobs as well. vise grips and things of that nature. and bring a friend. having a friend with you can save you time, energy, and part watch while you grab tools or what have you. :) and wear steel toes cause the u know yards here are hazardous. lol great video Matt

WVresident na but I should. They pull all their prices off the computer so I just figured they was pretty set on the prices. It would be worth a try though I suppose. I need a left front headlight bucket/cover that goes around the headlight. they want like $25 for it and I can order it new for $15. They want $45 for the dash bezel that goes around the gauges and radio and I can order it for a lot cheaper as well.

Harley Barnes Damn that's ridiculous for junk yard parts to cost that much. I had to get a driver side window for my XJ, it's a 2 door so I had hell even finding a yard that had the window. When I finally did find one, it was $50 dollars. I left the track attached to it and they didn't pay attention to charge me for the track luckily. Check out Car-Part.com and it will pull up parts from junkyards local to you and all over the country with prices on some stuff.

Liked and subscribed! PCM is acting up in my 97 dodge ram 2500 Cummins, AC clutch isn't engaging, cruise control won't work, fuel gauge always reads empty and now alternator isn't charging. After looking online and refusing to spend 1,112 for a (New) refurbished one pre programmed from Flagship1. I liked the video and subed. Last week i was at our local pick n pull and had to use a ehaust pipe as an extension to loosen a bolt. Was awesome to see that you used one in the video!

I had just wondered and posted--on another video--whether it was possible to power up a cluster to read the mileage on a donor car. Thanks. Now that I know this, I can find out a lot of things...like whether the cluster I need will require a mileage offset...or how to find one that's close in mileage to my old one. (I know I can swap the electronics from my old one, but this is easier.)

i actually thought i already knew everything but i was wrong! i was desperate to find a way to read digital odometers with a battery but wasnt sure how to bring a 12v source without getting kicked out. nice save!

ours here in des moines is called "wrench-n-go" and back when i had my xj my dad and i would go out there for parts. these will come in handy if i ever need something from their again. of course, ours doesnt have many tjs
