I declutter one small space/area at a time. I don’t stress to declutter a lot at one time. I revisit my spaces continuously over and over. It’s amazing what I can declutter the 2nd or 3rd time in that same area.

I like to do a little wander around the house now that we've gone through almost all of it once. There's always a thing here or there that was somehow invisible the first time and now clearly can be let go.

I go through phases of decluttering. Things eventually go through a bunch of random “waiting zones” until I find out what to do with them. Usually I get annoyed by something that triggers me to want to declutter haha

For the "What if I need it later" category, I make myself aware that because of all of this clutter, I will not remember that I have this and will buy it again anyways, therefore I can declutter it right away. Additionally, if you are keeping all the money from selling the clutter, you will have more than enough to buy this one or two things again that you might need in 3 years from now.

I just did the Minimalist 30 day Challenge. This is day 27 and I’ve already got ahead and working on day 31!! Now I’m looking at my office and decluttering there as well. I feel so much lighter. I donated 13 banker boxes full of stuff, gave some things away and sold stuff too. There’s been some hard times but when I donated I thought about the money I had originally spent on it. What a waste of money! So now I will not spend so much on “stuff” and save my money. That’s my WHY. I’m 4 years from retirement and want a tiny house. I need more money and less stuff so decluttering is a win-win!! Thanks Gabe!

My goal is to declutter and become more minimal, but as you stated, it all came back. I think I am to a point where I am overwhelmed by all the stuff that I wanted but can really live without. I am working on a system to separate and get rid of. I thought to myself if there was a fire and it all burned up, would it matter as much and could I do without or would I jump in the fire to save it all. Thank you

For seldom used power tools that could possibly be needed in the future: put it on permanent loan to a relative who could use it often, say a child who is fixing up their house, with the understanding that you can "borrow" it back when you need it. This helps to maintain these tools because they are getting cleaned, oiled, etc. instead of rusting away in my basement.

Declutter my shoe organizer that I used for supplies... Basically a junk drawer I turned into a shoe organizer. It's usually supplies from office to home, batteries etc. I like it... It's more organized. It saves a drawer to be for something else since I have a little kitchen. And everything is kept organized.

I think one of the biggest things I've taken on since starting both financial as well as lifestyle minimalism (one month down a life time to go) is the realization that its a journey. I can't run 10 miles right now so I'll run 3, i.e. I can't reasonably purge the whole house in a weekend so I'll take it one room, cabinet or box at a time. It's really help to cut down on the anxiety of making such a large shift in my life.

This might just be the best video I've ever seen on YT. Seriously, it was EXACTLY what I needed right now. I think one of the hardest things about going minimalist is keeping up the new habits. I went minimalist in August 2020, and while it has gotten easier, I still find it hard to maintain the correct headspace required to declutter. One trick I do is to move things to the boot of my car as a sort of 'holding bay'. I leave them there, and if after a few days/weeks I'm not missing anything (or I can't even remember what's in there) then I take it all to the charity shop. The advantage of this system is that it makes me super keen to get rid of it so I can have a nice empty car again, plus I sort of get the declutter-serotonin-hit twice.
@crystalrainbow19
@crystalrainbow19 3 жыл бұрын
@@energeticconfidentlady4254 Actually, I say “charity shop“ because that’s what I did with my preloved items for years, but recently I found a lady who distributes to the poor, so I’ve been taking it to her. I too prefer this instead of giving it to someone who is going to make money off it.

Thank you for saying that about getting depressed after decluttering and the highs and lows. All I was hearing was how great I was supposed to feel, but I only felt high while I was doing it and for the first week after, but then I crashed pretty hard. It became clear which problems and feelings the decluttering fixed (A LOT) and how much it didn't (also kind of a lot) and I definitely got depressed for a bit.

I do like having a timeout box for some things. I don't do it for everything, but its useful for clothes and seeing what you actually wear (turn the hanger around indicates its unused, when you use it, its hung the regular way), and I used a timeout box when I try to reduce more of the stuff in my kitchen. I reduced the number of plates and bowls I have. Time out box proved I didnt miss it at all.

I love your points on wardrobe - when I was younger I thought I have to renew constantly my wardrobe, buying this and that: when at the end you end up putting the same things... Or thinking that if I wouldn’t be in that place: I wouldn’t buy it. So why do I even bother now? I think the question why is powerful, behind any reasoning as you said:) Thanks for the video!

Now you're in my territory. LOL I had an organizing business and decluttering was the largest part of it. Just today I gave away some things that I was keeping to give as gifts but that never happened. Then a friend of mine created a local online auction to help with getting some funds for a local family in need. She came over and picked up those things. When I had my business I declined a couple jobs for one of the reasons you mentioned. They only wanted stuff moved from one part of the house to another. I wasn't about to do that because there's no learning curve there. In my place there is no junk drawer anywhere. I have few kitchen utensils and I cook a lot. Those utensils sit in a tall container on top of the stove. Things like scissors, tape dispensers etc, are in a drawer in my file cabinet in a flatware tray that I got at the dollar store, so I can see what I have and I don't end up with 10 of one thing. For my sewing table, I have a small plastic 3 drawer unit that I keep my needles and other sewing essentials in. I made a board with pegs to hold my threads so I can see when I'm getting low an any color. That hangs on the wall which takes up no space. I'm using the same pots and pans I bought 10 years ago. They still do the job and are in good shape. I own one purse and it's tan and goes with everything. One pair of winter boots and one winter coat. I crochet so I made my own beanie and matching neck scarf. One of the things I gave away today was my old spice jar collection as I found something that works better and saves space. The others are still in great condition. One of many things I told my clients was to not get rid of something they are using till it literally falls apart. Replace it then and only then so there is no double buying and then you can't find it later.

I feel kinda guilty for decluttering my wardrobe. I only own between 40 more leaning on 50 clothing items now (excluding underwear/socks/ pyjamas) and I actually got rid of a whole lot, adopted the one in one out rule. The problem is that I changed close to 80-90% percent of the original items, because I didn't even like those. I liked nearly none of the clothing items I owned and one by one replaced them. That obviously has cost me a lot of time searching and money (not thaaaat much because second hand, but still). And I feel like buying a new wardrobe is the least minimalist/sustainable thing you can do and that kinda makes me feel guilty.

Spatulas/spoons/etc. Ugh, I have so many, as well as cookie sheets/backing pans and I cannot bring myself to get rid of them. Honestly, I feel like I have enough to last me the rest of my life so why get rid of them now, but a crock and two large drawers full still annoys me.

I dun think decluttering should be a habit, but rather go through what you have on a regular basis. The goal is to have less stuff, not decluttering for the sake of decluttering. I did a couple rounds of major decluttering, then several months later, I played The Mins Game (www.theminimalists.com/game/) for the first time and only got to Day 9. Last Dec, I played it again, and got to Day 15. Now I intend to do it every 3 months, but the aim is to be aware and stop when I feel there's nothing else to throw.

The most common time I feel guilt when decluttering is when I’ve used an item and realized it’s not for me, but it isn’t in a condition to donate. So I will be trashing the item. Sometimes I will try to donate it anyway, but honestly donation centers throw out such a big percentage of the donations they receive that I know in the end it will be thrown out. I try to be intentional when purchasing, but I’m human and still make mistakes.

Don’t marry a hoarder like I did!!🤣🤣. I’ve learned I can only declutter my things and he has gotten better too. He still hoards but mostly in his outside area...the barn and workshop. It’s a process.....

The process must be handled gently and with love especially with our loved ones. Decluttering within the family can bring strife and anger if we keep throwing their things as if their things doesn’t matter to them. Happy Days.

Like the lighting in the background. The lamp, spotlight & string lights. Let the eyes wander while provide warm video, nicely done. As far as decluttering, for me I ask myself do I really need this? The answer is most often no. Another thing I try to think of, is one in one out rule. If you buy something, it’s to replace or upgrade something so that helps sometimes too. Decluttering is definitely an ongoing conscious process & prevention is more crucial than the cure.

I helped my parents move house a couple of years ago. While there was a good amount of purging, one of the things that really takes up space is photos. Boxes and boxes of photos, albums, scrapbooks...all that shit. None of us are the type who look at old photos yet somehow my parents became the repository of decades of family ephemera. The moment they die I'm shoveling all of it into the trash.

@@rubyred765 That's understandable. My family isn't into that so I think it's more no one wants to be the one to throw that stuff away, except me. And my mother to an extent. Y'know, keep the best of the best but photos where no one has any idea who the people are? Trash'em.

@@dergluckliche4973 I see your point. I did go thru the meaningless ones. I tried to look at it from every angle. Also if the info is written the pic may be useless. Duplicate pictures I gave to others

Right there...coincidence or not? Indecision and guilt are motivation killer. I regret getting rid of a few things, mainly sentimental. It’s been a year ans I can’t get over it. Any way, maybe that’s why I’m holding onto silly stuff like expensive dresses I hardly used that I’m trying to sell...haven’t even posted them yet 🤦🏻‍♀️
