You can suggest it yourself for it to be added to The National Film Registry (you can send them up to 50 choices per year, of your own choosing). 25 selections are made by The Registry every Dec. (almost that time). I think "The Thing" is impressive, but I must point out the clear influence it had from 1978's "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", which I've been suggesting & which I think is far superior to the 1956 original (which they've already added). Btw, regarding films that have similar premises to these, I'd recommend "The Hidden" (1987), "They Live" (1988) & "Fallen" (1998). Finally, I personally prefer the original "The Blob" to the remake.

They had the entire movie shot using practical effects, but after a test screening the producers decided against it in favor of CGI. They said the effects didn't hold up and made it look too much like an 80's movie. I saw the demo reel of the practical behind the scenes stuff and it looked incredible. What about “Alien?!” It’s got the same kind of isolated setting, tense rivalry between the protagonists (to include one “person” not being what he appears), and titular parasitic alien hunting down the protagonists (armed with flamethrowers) in “And Then There Were None” fashion. Hell, the chestburster scene in “Alien” was even the influence for the defibrillator scene in “The Thing.” Surely this warrants inclusion on this list, even if it has to be converted to a top 12. Also, while I can forgive its exclusion, I think Howard Hawk’s “The Thing From Another World,” of which John Carpenter’s “The Thing” is a remake, deserves a shout out here. It doesn’t have the same atmosphere or themes as Carpenter’s, but if you enjoy “The Thing” you may well enjoy seeing it just to see the movie Carpenter liked enough to remake (parts of this movie are actually even shown in two different Carpenter films: “Halloween,” in which the kids Laurie Strode is babysitting are watching it on TV, and in “The Thing” itself, where footage of the Norwegian research crew discovering the alien spacecraft is actually taken from a scene in the original movie)

Another good list this week. I would like to add one that gets little attention. Blood Glacier (2013) and Austrian eco-horror that has scientists discover something in the ice. Does it rip The Thing off? No. There are similarities and even seen some people suggest that it could act as a prequel. But what you get is a really good little creature feature with some nice practical fx.

Why do people INSIST on calling 2011 The Thing a remake? There is a huge difference between a prequel and a remake. Also, it was originally supposed to have practical effects, but the studio said it was too expensive.
@grahamtaylor89123 жыл бұрын
They never said it was too expensive, it was shot with practical effects and the studio decided to reshoot it with cgi.

I feel like a lot of people don’t like “The Blob” but I watched it as a kid and it creeped the hell out of me. I think it’s downright comical when the Blob is killing on a mass scale because of it weird limbs and smashing people flat like pancakes but when it’s killing on a smaller scale, it’s really gory and amazing. Lot of body melting going on.

A few of the movie suggestions seem to be purely based on the premise that "there is snow". Otherwise I feel we'd get more movies focused on practical effects, body horror and themes of paranoia/isolation. Harbinger Down was made by the special effects team that got shafted by the board behind the Thing Prequel movie and should be top billing alongside Void. Otherwise decent list and good positive framing overall. Slither or Bite or Event Horizon would have been excellent suggestions to include.

I have a comment, not about The Thing itself, but about Marvelous Videos -- This is so wonderful! Discussing many movies from a variety of genres! -- and about sci-fi and horror movies in general. There were many older films of the like, in the 1970s, 1960s and 1950s. They used to be shown on over-the-air broadcast TV. Sometimes in the afternoons or mornings, but mostly late at night. I wish Marvelous Videos would cover some old late-night favorites and rare oddities that might be out on video or streaming. I'm confident this will happen soonish. One example of what I'd like to see is the Gamma 1 movies, all four of them, which were made in Italy, shown dubbed in the 60s, and ran late-night TV in the 70s. They were never marketed as a series or group of films, they just came and went at random. They were known as bombs, losers, and among the worst B-movies from Italy. Two of them have been temporarily available on streaming and "On Demand". I never got to see all four of them, but I want to, especially in HD. I wouldn't call them gems, but these oddities may be fun to watch. Gamma 1 is: Wild Wild Planet; War of the Planets; Planet on the Prowl; The Snow Devils. I don't know which order they're in, but who cares? They're worthy of restoration, to any video company that's interested, and worthy of having all language tracks. I wouldn't mind them in Italian with English subs. I wish they all were on KZbin.

Virus (1999) Jamie Lee Curtis & Donald Sutherland would have been more at home on this list than several of these. Slither (2006) also, which brings to mind Night of the Creeps (1986) too. I mean, Night of the Creeps had it all. A wise cracking detective, aliens, zombies, sorority slashing, body horror. A fun watch. Oh yeah and Deep Rising (1998) too. The way Virus and Deep Rising accomplish the same isolation as The Thing is to have it take place on a ship. Virus was about an alien invader that "hacks" both machinery and biological organisms. So picture The Thing, but it'll grab your phone and laptop and combine them with you. The protagonist has to stop it before it gets off the ship. You have to remember that people were very afraid of hackers back in the 90's. Very scary. lol For that matter The Borg were maybe influenced by that kind of combining technology and biological systems, body horror idea a bit. The premise of Virus brings to mind Moontrap (1989). A good watch starring Walter Koenig. Alien robots that incorporate body parts into themselves. Also Screamers (1995).

Thing 2011 suffered from the CGI Paradox - if it looks like CGI, it automatically fails. (The only exception to this rule was Stan Winston, because - well - Stan Winston.)
@WudwasMcGee3 жыл бұрын
You somehow managed to discuss these films without mentioning cosmic horror and HP Lovecraft, which are the driving motivations for The Thing and other films you mentioned. These are less "movies like The Thing" and more "Cosmic Horror films". The Thing is a definitive horror, for sure, but you missed discussing what actually ties these movies together. You also missed The Thing poster that appears in The Mist 😉
