We had to read this song as a poem in English Class. When the teacher played the song, we all froze. There was many tears and no one spoke the rest of the class

That was so moving. Incredibly beautiful and sad.

Excellent song and played beautifully too. The song has become very popular - probably because a fine UK band, The Men They Couldn't Hang, recorded it in the 1980s on their debut album Night Of A Thousand Candles.

Saw them live so many times. The sixties and the seventies were great for real music - didn't appreciate what a wonderful time it was creatively until it was all gone. Corries, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Runrig, etc. Such a pity for today's youngsters, no real music, just posers who can't sing using autotune and other electronic tricks.

By far the best version of this beautiful song. Surely one of the best anti-war songs ever written

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.

Eric Bogle is one of our great lyricists - sadly under-recognised.
