Upgraded to 41 from 40 via the Software application on my two older ThinkPads. It was a seamless upgrade. The only thing was that Emacs had to reinstall the packages, but that was done automatically by Emacs. Other than that I had zero issues. My display and NAS settings and printer connection remained intact. Very happy with my experience. I’m on day 76 in using Linux full time. Upgraded my computers from Windows 11. Deleted Windows with no dual boot. Again, I am very happy and regret I had not done it sooner.

I bought an used T480 that came with Windows 11 with the intention of dual booting. Win 11 was configured with a local user account. As anyone would after buying a used computer, I restored the OS to factory defaults, and realized I lost the local user feature. The OS was forcing me to sign in with a Microsoft account at the setup page. None of the workarounds that's on the Internet work now. So I wiped my HDD and gifted the entire disk space to Fedora. It has been a regret-free 2 months now. I DO NOT miss the bloat/spy OS that is Microsoft Windows.

I was thinking a lot about that. The thing is that a minimized Window on Gnome is not intuitive to get back. I think alt tabbing works, otherwise you need to access the workspaces anyway. Maxmizing however does work with a double click yes, but some applications like Gnome files have a top search bar, making it more difficult to click

Great video as always, I would have also mentioned uninstalling Xorg packages when upgrading from F40. Also for some reason the GSConnect extension was installed as a system extension on F40 and I had to purge it to update it since it was outdated.

For those using the experimental fractional scaling improvements, keep in mind is a little bugged with steam and proton games; the output resolution of them is incorrect at first, they also get scaled independently of the resolution, making them look a little blurry, and alt tabbing may cause display issues since the window gets confused and doesn't know which size it should scale to. It's an experimental option for a reason.

You can also have tiling in KDE, or at least something real "similar" to tiling. Simply click on shift + plus window and you can adjust the window to fit in a screen area.

PopOS Tiling Mgr is nice. AND it is separate from the OS, so you can install on other Distros. I have not tried installing it on Fedora 41. I now use the same Gnome extension shown in this video.

If you expose your computer to the internet this might be a thing to consider, but it's not really worth it on a home network. Even in companies it's a common practice to disable computer firewalls and rely on dedicated hardware to block ports. It's also not like any port is open by default and you need some application listening to it in the first place

I absolutely ignored all updates before update. All worked fine, system was updated after upgrade. Only thing i noticed is missing "nvidia driver" in software center. Probably because i installed drivers via akmod. EDIT: One thing i noticed on Fedora is that if you install VLC as a system package (nor flatpak) - Gifs and videos seeking in reddit/youtube throwing errors and you need to refresh page. So install VLC as a flatpak

I installed my Fedora KDE before when I don't have my Nvidia GPU. I did not install the driver because I am dual boot my computer on Windows. When I installed, Nvidia, I did not install the Nvidia driver on it yet, I used my OS normally in my coding. Now I gonna practice on Flutter, I realized that I have to install the driver on it. But when I installed my driver, my os is ruined. So I gonna try to install Fedora 41 tomorrow but this time is with default Gnome DE. I try it Gnome this afternoon before I installed it tomorrow, and I can't believe it how am I comfortable with it compare to KDE.

My number 1 step was reinstall Arch. Nothing wrong with Fedora itself but their repos are kinda limited, even with rpm fusion and the copr is no substitute for the aur. I don't wanna have to hunt for installers or compile half the software I use.

KDE is great. It may feel a little overwhelming though with the broad range of options and customizability. GNOME tries to go for simple, but they lose me on making it so simple common features needed are missing or have to be enabled in weird ways or through extensions. Cinnamon just seems old now... its okay, but if you take the time to learn KDE, I think its a much better option.

That sounds odd. Any chance that you didn't update your system before upgrading? The graphical method considers this I think, but a full update "refresh" is important to clear out any files that aren't supposed to be there

The only issue I have from upgrading to 41 from 40 is on my surface go 2 auto rotate does not work anymore. Haven't been able to figure out how to fix it and the only workaround is to install an extension to manually rotate the screen.

I never understood the need for workspaces. I just alt tab everything. Having so many things opened is just not good practice in my opinion. So in a sense I just create a workspace every time I do something by closing and opening the programs I want to use. Maybe I feel this way because as a millennial I had to do a lot of ram management when I had a crappy 4GB laptop back in 2009.

It's just workflow dependent. I also used less windows in the past and alt tabbed between them, but since I increasingly got into them the number of open windows also increased.

Looks like Fedora has come far from the time I last time used it. But what is that context menu sub menu opening in place of the original with back button instead of spawning a new menu? I don't recall seeing that before and it looks like something I really won't like.

When you click the "New Document" menu item I'd expect a sub menu to pop right next to it, but now it just changes to the new document menu in place and "New Document" item with back arrow as the first item. We have plenty of space on the desktop and hiding the rest of the menu adds additional clicks to the workflow while hiding controls previously visible all the time.

im on 41 but i believe its x11 not weyland as alot of things dont yet work with weyland for me. even my sound is still goofy after using multiple versions of easy effects i still cannot get full functionality of settings or visual eq but have set up Easy effects to auto start in the background for eq and still i get a delay when playing a sound the volume cannot start with a video which makes editing a pita. cant find the way to make the system play a 22k sound to keep audio alive and am very shiny when it comes to linux ive dabled in many distros mostly debian based but this one was much better for my use case so fedora is my new os from windows. still have to cheat a bit with vm for video editing on filmora but I originally had it working in boxes before i borked my first install with some bad code changes in files that i forgot where it was to edit so i just started over and upgraded from 40 to 41 any help with that command line or file to edit would be of great help. like i said im still "shiny"/new.however i was able to add my nas to the file browser as well as reorganize the list on the left. maybe its an x11 thing

@@CodingHaribo I asked Gemini 1.5 Pro that exact question. It said Ubuntu is easier and great for many varieties of tasks. Fedora is faster and up to date and is capable of very complicated tasks. I will build a work station for general artificial intelligence working in Google's cloud. I do not code. But I am creating some stuff. It recommended 256 gb of RAM and 4 tb storage. Crazy processor plus other amenities. This will be a custom build. I hope this helps a little bit.

One is very old and slow... one is very new with DDR5. One is a laptop and has 2 sticks of DDR4 3200 16GB, and they are both detected and running right at 3200. I'm not an expert so not sure what you should try.

i got a question, maybe im gonna explain it pretty bad but still. so i was using windows 11 for a while and yesterday i switched to fedora linux but the thing is that i got 2 ssds and before switching to linux i moved all my important games and documents to the "disk D" and after that i formatted the main ssd to install fedora on it, and now i wanna move my documents and apps back to the main disk but it js doesnt seem to work.. i hope i explained pretty good

"disk D" just doesn't show up in files manager, but in the app "disks it shows up.. any help is really appreciated!

Did you download the latest version? In the file manager on the bottom left there should be an additional disk, but it won't be called D:\, since only Windows uses letters. Since the drive appears in the disk manager you can also check how it is connected (mounted). Open up the disk utility, select the disk and on the right you should see a partition (usually only one because it's a second drive). If you select it and press on the settings gears --> Edit partition, you can enable or disable a bunch of stuff like automatically connecting it, if it shows in Gnome Files (something called x-gvfs or similar), etc.

@cristtonw No you don't need to reformat. Windows uses NTFS for disks by default and Linux understands it. Simply mounting it does not reformat it
