In this video, we will talk about 11 things you didn’t realize are killing your dog.
Heartworms
Believe it or not, dogs can get foot-long worms in their hearts.
Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in heart failure, organ damages, and death in pets. The worms enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. As the infection spreads in the animal, infective larvae from the mosquito begin to mature into adult heartworms within the heart. From here, they can spread to blood vessels and lungs. This process happens over the span of 6 to 7 months, and fully grown worms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs! What’s even scarier is that heartworms will mate and produce offspring. At one time, a dog may have as many as 300 worms living inside them.
Always watch out for warning symptoms of heartworms. A persistent, dry cough is a common sign seen in dogs with heartworm disease.
Remember, all dogs should be tested annually for heartworm infection.
Giving your dog human foods
Most people give their dogs human food, thinking they are being caring. But many human foods are toxic to dogs.
Xylitol, for example, is a sweetener found in many sugar-free products. It is extremely poisonous to dogs, and can be found in many products such as candies, chewing gums, baked goods, protein bars, toothpaste, and some peanut butters.
Even small amounts of Xylitol can cause low blood sugar levels, seizures, liver failure, or even death in dogs.
Onion and garlic are also toxic to dogs. Humans may love the flavors of garlic and onion to spice up their food, but sharing foods that contain these ingredients with your pet can cause serious health problems. In severe cases, it could even kill your dog.
And if you share your food with your dog, make sure it doesn’t contain harmful ingredients such as chocolate, raisins or nuts. Grapes and avocados are also a big no-no for your canine. Many dogs sadly have died of kidney failure after eating just a few raisins and grapes. Keep in mind that most times the food we eat are too fatty, too spicy or too salty for our canines. A medium dog weighing 33 pounds only needs 200 milligrams of sodium per day.
And remember that over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen can be extremely dangerous to your pet.
Giving Bones to Your Dog
Many vets believe it just isn’t worth the risk of serious injuries to give your dog a bone.
If you’d like to give your pup a bone to chew, it’s important to follow certain rules so your dog can enjoy their bone safely.
And remember not to give bones to a dog who has had restorative dental work.
Poor diet
If your dog is not eating proper food, it can be life threatening.
There are many poor-quality dog foods in the pet stores that your animal should stay away from.
And keep in mind that there is no one feeding schedule for dogs. How much and how often your dog should eat depends on various factors such as the dog's age, activity levels, type of food and health.
For the first few months of a puppy’s life, they will need small meals of food throughout the day. This makes it easier for them to digest and help keep energy levels consistent.
Starting around four months, puppies can begin eating about three times a day, and after that, puppies will quickly graduate to twice-a-day feedings.
Most vets recommend feeding an adult dog at least twice per day. However, more important than feeding frequency is meal portion size.
Studies have shown that overweight dogs live 2 and a half years less than dogs with a healthy body weight.
Lack of Exercise
Every dog needs regular exercise to help maintain good mental and physical health. Dogs who don’t exercise are at a higher risk for stiff limbs and joints. They are also more likely to develop health issues. A dog who exercises will have a prolonged lifespan!
But keep in mind that short-nosed breeds like pugs and bulldogs have respiratory issues and are not capable of running long distances.
And for older dogs, they are better off resting or going on shorter excursions more often.
You don’t take care of your pet’s teeth
Like humans, dogs need regular dental care. Their teeth are home to hundreds of bacteria and need to be brushed just like yours do.
Common Household items
Insecticides such as bug sprays and ant baits can be as dangerous for your pet as they are to the insects.
Likewise, balls and other playtime pieces that are too small for your dog’s size can be a choking hazard. Toys with small parts that are unsafe for young children are also obviously hazardous for dogs.

This has a lot of misleading info. Prongs, slip leads, & choke chains are meant to sit high up the neck just behind the ears. When fitted properly they're much safer than flat collars. Flat collars typically sit right on the hyoid that's why dogs who pull on flats are more prone to tracheal collapse. & harnesses just encourage pulling if your dog isn't already trained to heel. That's why your best bet is always gonna be to train your dog to heel & use a properly fitted prong or an e-collar for small corrections. I'm not gonna get that into raw feeding bc there's a lot of controversy when it comes to pet nutrition but a dog's digestive system isn't like ours. They're much hardier & their stomach acids & gut flora can definitely handle raw meat. The bigger danger w raw feeding is that most ppl don't add enough supplements or use the correct ratio more so than the bacteria. Some ppl also argue that it has the tendency to make them aggressive

@@Sunset013 used correctly, they are a wonderful tool. Anything can be a torture device if used incorrectly. But a prong, ecollar or check chain give many dogs more freedom and a much better life than they would have without them. Used and fitted properly, they are comfortable for the dog and do not cause any discomfort. My dogs see their collars (be it ecollar, check chain or prong) and come running excitedly to put them on. They know that their collars mean something fun is going to happen. If they ever had a bad experience or discomfort, they would not be eager to have them on, let alone be excited and go fetch them for me to put them on them. As a trainer, I have seen the result of incorrect use of these collars, as well as flat collars and harnesses, and I have helped so many dogs to recover from their trauma. But the tool is not to blame, its the person using it is.

7:30 My dog eats plenty of bones and nothing has ever happened. I even asked the vet and he said that they are not that dangerous and it's one of those things overprotecting people like to worry about. Though he warned me that if he eats too many bones he might have problems to poop. The risk of the bone fracturing and seriously injuring or choking them is very low because they are made to be able to eat bones. Although I guess it might be more dangerous for some specific breeds or when they get older it's like we stopped eating hard or sticky food to avoid choking, and multiple thousands of people choke to death every year only in the US.

My dog has a collar that goes around her chest rather than her throat. It has this tug thing that stops her from pulling, and if she does pull, it sort of tightens around her shoulder blades (not insanely tight, it just lets her know to stop doing it). Anyway, I think its a better alternative than the collar which she struggles with on walks when she gets excited.

I self-fed my pets their entire lives. I did animal rescue my whole life and fostered and trained dogs and cats for the Humane Society and local Rescue Groups. No dog or cat left my home without obedience training and hand signals training. My own pets have never been food rationed, even being self-fed (this means having food available at all times, and of course water, as much as they want of clean, fresh water!). I never owned or fostered an overweight dog or cat. As long as you let your common sense guide you and you listen to your pet, you should be fine. Also , do NOT overvax or give your pet flea/tick medications (except heartworm medication) as this will shorten your pets lives! Common flea remedies like lemon water sprays, baths with Dawn dish soap (weekly or bi weekly) work just fine, and won't put dangerous chemicals in their bodies (would you allow your family to drink Raid to prevent mosquitoes?, then why give your pets the same chemicals in a pill, drop, chew or injection ?)! Do your research, read and watch programs that educate you about the dangers of over vaxing and anti flea/tick meds. There are some excellent Holistic Vets online that have excellent advice! Your pets are your family, they depend on you, give them the best lives possible! God Bless🕯

Dogs need bone in their diet, the minerals and nutrients in them form part of their evolutionary diet. Yes never give cooked bones, but raw bones are fine for them depending on size and how carefully your dog chews. You can be safe by getting raw mince with minced bones in to avoid any hazards. Sometimes the way you have to think about it is what would a dog do in the wild, if they caught a chicken theyre not picking out the bones, they’re eating feathers, bone, organs, all of it- same with raw eggs, they would eat the shell too.

Some of this is very wrong - Raw meat is best for dogs. Their gut is designed to digest raw meat and bones, not cooked meat or kibble. There is far more to raw feeding than just giving them some meat. Always do your research before feeding your dog any diet, be it raw or a commercial diet. Raw bones are good for dogs and should be provided daily. Check chains used correctly are much safer and more comfortable for your dog than flat collars and harnesses. Any collar or training tool can be used incorrectly and be torturous. Use common sense and learn to use a check chain the right way and you and your dog will benefit. A check chain or slip lead must be placed high up on the neck, under the chin and right behind the ears. This prevents interference with the throat and gives you control of the dogs head. Where the head goes, the body follows. There is also a correct way to put a check chain or slip lead on so that it releases instantly.

Raw meat diet taken outta context. Raw meat 🥩 is good for dogs and has many more benefits than kibbles. I do mix of both and human food.

You mean the thing that can cause permanent joint damage for heavy pulling dogs? Any tool you use must be used properly and you must get to know your dog/the dog your training to figure out which tool will work best for them. Star r+ with all dogs, but once you get to know them and see how they’re doing on r+ you can then make the decision to use a tool (properly). Whether it’s a prong collar, e collar, head collar, or harness. If you don’t know how to use it, or it doesn’t fit your dog, then yes any of them can cause damage

Harness is for pulling weights, not for control. You want control or you want to get pulled ? The choice is yours.

Um...no? Harnesses are a much safer alternative to collars that are basically like a vest, almost like a shirt since they wrap around the chest and back...again...like a shirt. I'd rather be pulled around than having something basically choke my dogs by pulling their neck. I have small dogs so it's not that big of a deal if they pull me around tbh. "Controlling" your dog by pulling them by the neck is cruel and wrong

Keeping your dog healthy with vegan dog food, exercise and filtered water will keep you away from the vet. Same with humans and doctors.

Dogs are omnivorse, wich means they eat both meat and plants, but the meat is a big and important part of their diety so putting them on a vegan diet for no reason can be very bad for them

Grapes cause renal failure in dogs, so do raisins since they are dried grapes. Raw meat from the grocery store is an issue because of contamination in our meat processing facilities. The processing can expose them to salmonella and other bacteria.

@@autumn7ful Yes the raw meat part of this video is rubbish. Some of these people need to do research and educate themselves on this raw meat topic because dogs can safety be fed a full raw meat diet their entire lives. It's a lot healthier than nasty fake processed dog food. Most people don't feed raw meat because it's extremely expensive and more time consuming. Trust me, I used to feed our European Doberman raw meat, real rice(not the heat up in a microwave kind of crap), and fresh green vegetables twice a day for 12yrs. Raw chicken(smash the bones with a mallet so they wont splinter) and red beef...The only two meats to steer clear from are ham and pork. 🤙
