Another set of thought provoking tips Greg. I totally agree with encouraging nature/wildlife photographers to think creatively and your photography certainly does this. When I'm mentoring members of Birdlife Photography - Australia, I encourage them to purchase your 'Fash' ebook. It's the best book on the market for understanding and experimenting with flash photography. For those who read this post, take a workshop with Greg. I traveled with Greg through Costa Rica and it accelerated my photography, not to mention the thrill of so many bird and wildlife 'captures'.

Dear Greg, i have been following your beautiful website for a long time from Sri Lanka and always admired your jaw dropping nature photography. I am an Engineer / amateur wildlife photographer from Sri Lanka, which is also a beautiful country with some stunning wildlife. I have surprised by the gear you are using and the astounding results. I am very happy that you have this youtube channel. Keep up the great work. Cheers Manoj

Hi, Manoj. Thanks so much for your kind comments, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That's an interesting comment on the gear. I have indeed tried to go a bit lighter and cheaper on the telephoto end especially and, while it's not the same as shooting a big fixed prime lens with a fast aperture (autofocus performance and background control are what we pay the big money for), you can indeed get good results in a lighter, cheaper package. I hope to visit your country someday. I've seen some beautiful images from there, and I've heard the food is fantastic as well :-) Cheers, Greg

Regarding your comment on "f/8 and be there" -- when I was studying in college chasing a commercial photography degree, my professor told us that was a phrase specifically about photojournalism. It was a shorthand phrase that meant focusing on being in the right situation (as a journalist) was more important than focusing on the creative (as a photographer). Most photogs not shooting PJ, weddings, or events can safely ignore "f/8 and be there" as you mention, especially when they're trying to get out of a creative rut. But perhaps more than many other subjects, wildlife can tip towards that "be there" side of the scale.
@deepgreenphotography2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Kerrick. Fair enough :-) You are right that I was kind of taking a swipe at a particular aperture whereas the spirit of the original quote was more about persistence and patience. Cheers, Greg

Hey Greg, enjoying your content. Am a retired US Navy Combat Photographer and now a 60ish-year-old nature and wildlife photographer. Stumbled onto your sites via Ian Plant. Looking forward to learning more from you as I bring flash into my nature and wildlife work.

Greg, why is it, while attempting macro, with a well-lit subject, using a Canon T3 DSLR, when I switch from viewfinder to live view, is my LCD totally black, with only the white rectangle showing?? (BTW, manual mode and manual focus). Thank you!
@deepgreenphotography Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. The viewfinder cannot simulate the look of flash before you take the shot. So, it shows you a live preview of what your exposure will look like without flash, which is likely very underexposed. You need to go to the menu (first section I believe) and disable "exposure simulation" to get a visible live preview through the back screen 😉
@usernamemykel Жыл бұрын
@@deepgreenphotography The T3 has no "Exposure simulation" feature. "Very underexposed" - YES!! Thank you!
@deepgreenphotography Жыл бұрын
@@usernamemykel I did look up that camera and yes, it seems that you cannot disable exposure simulation on it. A workaround is to raise your ISO value until you can see the image, at least to compose and focus in live view, and then set the ISO value back to your chosen setting to take the photo 🙂

Great video. Some good advice, much of it often overlooked. But... kill that opening. That is just one long brag. It is well done. But I don't care. It is all about you. Just kill it, you will gain many followers.

Hi, Bruce. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the feedback on the little intro. I certainly didn't intend it to be a brag but rather a little trailer for what kind of content I have on my channel. That said, I do think it's a little long regardless of how it's interpreted. Cheers, Greg
