In the past 3 years, I have gone from a poor golfer having no fun to breaking 100 (got my eye on 90) and really enjoying myself. I have been “golfing” casually for 20+ years and never really enjoyed it or got better (lots of “work” golf and charity tournaments). The difference in the last 3 years? The tutelage of Matty BoomBoom…and this video explains all the reasons why. Thanks so much, Matt!

Good point about enjoying golf more as a bogey golfer. At that level, a good shot is really appreciated. A par is really appreciated. A birdie is like Christmas morning.

I'm an recreational golfer who can shoot anywhere from 75 to 90. For example last Sunday I went out and carded a 76. Today I carded an 88. I'd love to be sub 80's all the time, but I've tailored my expectations to accept the game I have on any certain day. This channel changed my way of playing golf and has taught me to accept how fickle golf can be. Thanks Matt for teaching me a new mindset about golf.

Great video, as always. Reason it's so hard for most of us golfers to improve is that it's so hard to change habits that have been ingrained in our game for years, just like everytime Matt hits a wood/hybrid off the teebox, he can't help but start to pick up the tee he never actually used. Priceless.

I’m super excited for this golf season to begin and to put all of the tips and advice I’ve spend all winter getting from your vids into action. The thing that really resonated with me was one of your videos where you said “a double bogey is a bad shot followed by a stupid shot.” I sometimes allow myself to lose emotional control on the course, or try to hit shots there’s no chance I have to stupidly try to impress the people I’m playing with… and blowing up my score and making myself miserable doing it. This will be the year of the playa, and I’ll stay cool calm and collected out there!!

Good advice. Watching your videos have helped me change my mental approach to the game. I usually play Mondays with my golf buddy and we keep score but really don't worry about it. We play, enjoy the time, and have lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. I'm 75, he's 70 and we're never going to get much better and we accept that. Worrying and getting upset about a score diminishes the fun and we're just in it for the fun. Great video and keep accentuating the positive.

Only been playing for 2 years and I enjoy golf the most when I keep the ball in play and hit my yardages. Regardless of what I score, I know if I keep the ball in play and hit it + or - 5 yards of my target, in my mind I played good enough to shoot a decent score no matter the outcome. I know that if I keep hitting the ball that way, the lower scores will come in time with a solid short game

Best go to advice if someone asks, "What am I doing wrong?" is to say that they're standing too close to the ball after they hit it. They usually don't ask after that. I'll give advice to my golf partner occasionally, but none of it is mechanical: 1. Your tempo is off. 2. Take a breather and calm down. 3. "Don't worry about that, focus on the next shot." 4. Follow through (usually when he regresses to decelerating on chips). 5. When rushing and not following pre-shot routine, "Focus on your process."

Re: the "hero" shots. I was once behind a tree, and just for the hell of it I decided to try a pitching wedge to get up and over the tree, and it actually worked. I saw a recent interview with Xander - he said he get bogey or worse about 10% of the time. I get par about 10% of the time - everything else is a bogey or worse. My current goal is just to try and minimize the double-bogeys. And I still remember the 1st par - a nice par3 hole, and the tee shot landed right on the green. I am far less concerned with how my score is in relation to others. The one thing I can stress about is playing slowly and holding up the group behind me. If I can, I oftentimes play alone, mainly because I can play faster and not worry about holding anyone up. One time I looked over to the previous hole, and I saw the guy busy trying to fish his ball out of the water - at that point, I could relax and not worry about holding him up. I would never have the balls to try and give anyone else instruction. The only advice I would ever give would be to give the names of the instructors that I have taken lessons from, and I wouldn't even do that unless someone asked.

I think the 90 tip is lost on a lot of people. I play like 45 holes a year with my kids (9 at a time) and I try and come home at 45. Two doubles, one par, one birdie (two birdie putts), and six bogeys and you're there. I play so infrequently I'm not going to do better with touch shots and I'm going to shank a couple. Thinking about it in terms of how many bad holes I have in my back pocket makes it a lot more fun. I've never really been any better, but making it the goal instead of focusing on the other 72 shots I could eliminate with 18 aces frames it differently.

I love hitting over trees. Is it my ego, no. I'm still trying to break 90, I'm still just trying to have fun because it's amazing when it works. Do I want to try and hit that weird draw through the gap over the bunker? Of course. Can I? Of course not. I'm not trying to get par 72 lol. I'm enjoying the learning process, not neutering my imagination, and learning. I started Golf in April 2024 40+ handicap, now I am a shooting 95-105. From a previous video: "This isn't the f-ing PGA tour man, just trying to have fun." ~ Golf Sidekick.

It remains a useful shot into single figures. I know of one particular spot that needs to be done over trees from the fairway at my course, and there are instances that commonly require this shot to make the green in regulation from a borrowed fairway. This and the low bender stinger are the most useful hero shots. Do I want to play them? No. Will I need to play them to keep the round on the rails? Almost certainly.

So when the hero shot presents itself, I'm having it EVERTIME, and if I pull it off (and I have as many times as I haven't) then that is my day made.
