@@smokeypete2327 You never know . . . It also could help to wake them up. A professional therapist would try to help you understand that YOU are not responsible for your parents’ feelings. YOU are responsible for your OWN happiness. I understand that this is a completely foreign concept to most Jehovah’s Witnesses and is confused with selfishness and other bad qualities. But you cannot do any real good in this world unless you take care of your own mental health. If your parents shun you, that is ONLY THEIR CHOICE, NOT YOURS. Can you really imagine living your whole life inside this religion if you don’t believe it’s the truth? As a 17 year old, you might feel invincible physically, but take my word-and that of others-it will cause you physical, mental and emotional illness to stay in a cult whose beliefs and rules are oppressive and against what’s in your heart.

I completely agree with you. My family and I have been out for a little over 20 years and we don’t even recognize the religion anymore. It really has become a whole different animal. If we didn’t leave 20 years ago, we definitely would have left sooner or later especially since Watchtower embraced the Internet, KZbin, and Digital Media. I think the most disturbing thing about the organization is how condescending the governing body is towards the listeners of their Digital content. They treat and speak to everyone as if they’re a bunch of toddlers. It’s extremely insulting. Furthermore, within the last 15 years or more, Watchtower have Made so many crazy doctrinal changes that seriously contradict long time teachings and Jehovahs Witness standards. Again, I don’t recognize this religion anymore. They’ve become extremely uninviting. I don’t know how anyone can buy into this stuff anymore.

@@amandasaunders3493 i hope it works, but i find it really works best when things slowly start to make less and less actual, logical sense. When you actually start to question the stories and the ways yourself from an outsider PoV, it really shows you how bad this cult is. Hopefully that video can trigger his thoughts to start that doubting process and he can get away without too much trouble. If it doesnt work, then try to start asking questions about what his PoV is on JW. And start slowly, every once and a while asking him one of the many questions that a JW cant answer with their apps. Seem innocent and curious at first until he realizes that there isn’t actually truth in “the truth”

@@beaumartin366 yes little by little ticking questions to get him thinking. He still says what people who have left JW have fallen to satan's trickery. See, he grew up in the organization but went off doing his own thing, living recklessly and then he was in a car accident that ended in a two month coma two years ago. His JW mother was by his side every day in hospital reading to him and singing and, forgive me, brainwashing him. He has traumatic brain injury. I think it was taking advantage of his situation. But truly I'm sure she believes what she did was for his own good. It has not been easy on him since because he doesn't just sit and do what his mother thinks he should. He is in his forties. But he still believes what he has been told. I will continue to learn more facts to offer to him.

What's that scripture where the Pharisees would cross seven seas and continents to save a gentile, but don't care about their fellow men? That's part of my awakening, the love bombing thrown at "interested ones," meanwhile you who has already been here for 30 years plus, is still viewed with suspicion and every move you make gets scrutinized and judged. You don't show up to the meeting one day, it means you're becoming inactive. Never mind all the meetings you've never missed since year 2000. Meanwhile an interested person has never been to the meeting since year 2000 and shows up to the memorial in 2016 and all of us are required to surround him and show him we miss him. Get tha F outta here with that BS. Not that I wasn't the brother in charge of coordinating the love bombing though. But yeah, it hits you when you one time are on the receiving end of that love bombing and remember what it really used to be.

Regarding infantilization (#4), notice how often religious leaders (JW and others) introduce talking points by asking a question on behalf of their audience. This conditions believers to depend on their leaders for not only the right answers, but also for the right questions - further impeding them from asking truly critical questions of their own.
@swinnburn
@swinnburn 3 жыл бұрын
It's to keep the mind's from distractions asking critical questions could and would be seen as upsetting the peace of the group,that is a religious group, cohesiveness is accepting and following it. Even if you do it in your own time,and find something off!? What do you do with the information?! If you discuss it with someone that's not in the group your probably safe. But try that on a member?! It's a risk. Gathering a group of like minded folk in a room with a book of riddles and strange tales is asking for some weird things to happen.😬

@@barbiechyqa9192 I would say the most creepy part of him is the feigned smile, like what the hell is that, I had to listen to that at least once a week at meetings.A brother in my book study had alcohol problems. Married burly nice island black man with two shy sons. We went to hospital to do an "Investigation" because he had overdosed on alcohol, The man started crying and shaking so I held his hand and tried to comfort him, David Schafer, after the visit counseled me because as he said , we were doing an investigation for serious sin and my actions were out of place. This didn't really sit well with me, it just didn't seem right. I usually just brush brother stuff aside like that, like big deal, but didn't feel right. anyways, one day later Schafer called me on Bethel phone to tell me that brother killed himself. I can still see the face of his wife and kids to this day, that was over 25 years ago, and I still hate him for that. When I first came to Bethel and started In his congregation he hd me do an audit on the cong.accounts since I was account servant in my previous congregation, After spending many hours of research and talking to other Bethel brothers who did account stuff I came to the conclusion that the previous account servant was stealing large amounts of money, It was a bethelite, and I was certain of this and the proof was undeniable, he completely brushed the evidence aside, like no consideration, he is brain smart so its not like he couldn't see the reasoning but you could see the hazed look on his face because he knew the ramifications of this and he was presiding overseer he would be partially to blame. To be honest outside of those instances and a par per cousse masterbation talk he gave me he was a pretty decent guy, Its funny to have heard a few of his parts on JW org because he kind of said the same thing he did in the congregation, like his usual recycled stuff.

Can you imagine being with an abusive partner in the “Truth”? Getting away is difficult enough. Add to that a whole congregation that thinks your spouse is just wonderful and an organization that in every way supports the male partner being in control of the family and their finances, and you are surrounded by people that will never believe you and gaslight you on behalf of the abusive partner. This was my exact scenario with a sociopath; as a born-in female there is no support, only gossip currency. Once they soil your reputation you will never regain credibility (not that you were allowed it to begin with). There is no “sin” necessary when you call a JW man out on his bad behavior, but you will see how fast false information travels with an attempt to stand up for yourself. Each Elder visit was damage control, information extraction, blame shifting and coercion; none of it love, but it was interesting to hear slander about yourself from the lips of Perfect Pioneer Princesses who weren’t behind those closed-door conversations. They had a hard-on over the amount of abuse and subsequent trauma endured. Conditional love is a real eye opener.

When I first came away, I went through that book paragraph by paragraph, and looked up the original sources of every quote they used. EVERY SINGLE ONE of them was a lie. And what was even more egregious is that I recalled a talk given by a visiting speaker in which he used the very concept of quote mining as an example of how dishonest and untrustworthy Satan's world is. The whole "your best is never good enough" thing really messed me up the most. I remember asking as a kid what I had to do to be fairly sure I'd survive Armageddon. I was told "just do your best". I ruminated on that for years and years. My best? I could always do more so what is my best? Is it 20 hours a day in study? Is it reading the Bible back to back once a week? I was working part time and pioneering from the age of 14. I did presentations and talks (that a sister could do) I was the go-to stand in for cancellations the night of for the TMS. I volunteered for cleaning duties and quick builds. The elders would come to me to ask me to "encourage" certain "spirituality weak" young wans. I learned another language to preach in. I still was terrified I wasn't doing enough. I didn't have money to donate. I wasn't getting enough Bible studies. I wasn't "placing" enough literature. I should do more than 70 hours a month if I stopped going to the gym and seeing friends... I ended up getting so sick and burned out, that I had to step down. And ironically, that was basically the start of my shunning. When it was announced everyone assumed if done something wrong. Not that any of them were even pioneering in the first place... It's taken a decade to realise and start to undo this conditioning of never feeling good enough. I have an anxiety disorder (as well as PTSD) that I attribute to the constant dread and urgency that was impressed upon me from a formative age. This sucks. Thanks for highlighting these tactics, it's so important to be aware of, for waking up, but also for healing.

Omg this is the reason why I’m starting to wake up. I’ve never done pioneering or anything extra bc i never felt like i would be good enough 😢 and I always have brothers and sisters up my butt telling me to do more. I have severe depression and anxiety since i was young so it’s always been hard to stick to any kind of routine. I’m married and my husband never did anything extra either bc he’s afraid he wouldn’t be any good. (Thanks to his parents making him feel useless). The thought of Armageddon has always freaked me out until recently. I feel like god is not as cruel and jws make him seem. I only recently have felt that I matter and that I am good enough. I’m 23 :}}}}} and barely now feel that I am valid and I don’t need to make hours. Those rules are man made. Jesus never talked about hours. I want to fully wake up and hopefully help my husband wake up as well. Sorry for the long response but this is the first one that relates to my feelings 🥺

I do have to agree with your sentiments - whatever one does, the view is you can do more. The ultimate objective it seems that everybody is a pioneer and works part time to get by. The thing is though, they say you have to also show "balance" - as in running a family has more responsibility that being single etc . But yes, the constant emphasis of preach, preach, preach at every opportunity - always having literature in your back pocket etc- as seemingly being the ONLY worthwhile activity you can engage in can drive some very nuts- Ok you can do some WHOLESOME entertainment like sing kingdom songs away from the hall with fellow witnesses at a dinner ( mind you you have to be alert that your associates are suitable company because we are warned that even fellow witnesses may not be really "suitable" eg those that dont "go out" enough). The thing is, in reality, in my experience many witnesses DONT carry on like that even if they are constantly being told to do so. I have known many "highly committed and dedicated" witness families whose kids did go to Uni and got an education etc and were not influenced by "decadent worldly views". So basically one shouldn't get obsessed with trying to do everything the "society" says. Just do your own thing within "the rules" and if others want to think otherwise,- DO NOT worry about it. I never really gave a stuff what others thought. But I know that in the background, every witness is more or less judged / assessed by "the hours" they put in . Not all elders do that though, just some of the more zealouts. If you slack off, they will visit you as "shepherding" calls etc - sometimes as a surprise visit- and pretend ( yes, its a pretense) to care about you. If you don't respond ( = attend more meetings + step up preaching etc) , you are visited less often, labelled as "inactive" ( and therefore not one to be associated with of course) then visited only infrequently to once in a while maybe. They may ask you if you if its Ok for the CO or DO ( the heavy guns) come for a visit- I always said no its not necessary and left it at that. Lots of mind games which is not for everyone of course.

As an ex-JW I’ve seen just about all of these tactical deceptions and even though I’ve been out for 31 years, I still cannot erase the images of Armageddon and of my own sentence of death carried out by Jehovah. So if the JW’s teachings are the truth, then I have no choice but to accept that I am an enemy of God and have the blood of my wife and my children on my hands. As frightening as the threat of Armageddon is, I REFUSE TO AND DO NOT let what was drilled into my brain rule me or dictate how I live my life. If you write to the branch with a query about something - they wont answer unless you state who you are and where you are from - and then they know who you are and where from and if you ask too many "unsuitable " questions, they will let the local elders know that you are doing this and you will be "marked" as an agitator.

I lost my best friend to this cult. She had been out of it for 20 years then about 3 months ago she started going again. I'm not sure how she doesn't see the craziness of it. We've been best friends for 9 almost 10 years. During that time she was always a leader never a follower. Then being last year she started going through some rough times. I was by her side every day trying to help her through it. But because of these hard times she started searching for something to make her happy. She started going to Bible study with her grandmother and before I knew it she had jumped whole heartily back into it. Since I am not a witness it started putting a widget in between our friendship. I really hate that things have turned out the way it has. I wish nothing but happiness for her. If she finds happiness in the witness then great but I'm afraid that it's going to turn into a disaster. If it does I'll be here if she needs me. Thank you, for presenting this, it has helped me work through what I was caught up in trying to do the lessons and thinking that maybe I wanted to join. It seems there only goal is to go out and train other people about how to know God and become a member of their organization knocking on doors, and if you don't evangelize then you can't be a member.

Great analysis! I have to dig deeper into ways of manipulation... extremely interesting. I sudiet filoligy In university as a JW, believe it or not ;), and learned to analyze written texts and discourses. Saw a lot of manipulation in our literature and got a little sceptic and reserved towards the JW hence detecting these ways of influencing thinking. But kept going with the organization for 2 decades. No waiting for the right moment to turn in my disassociation letter.

Because they were never your friends to begin with. Their loyalty is not to Jehovah or following Jesus steps but following the rules of an organization. Following man-made rules such as the ones the Pharisees would impose into people. Remember you are not allowed to think on your own and need to be obedient to the faithful and discreet slave.

That was the thing when I was in. I didn’t feel the Joy I was told I should have. I’d have it fleetingly, when I’d have a great experience or something, but overall, no. I fought depression the whole time. I fought it like some demon was chasing me, ( with very little encouragement may I add) and feeling like no matter how hard I worked or tried it would never be enough and I didn’t feel joyful and blessed the way they said I should. And that was my fault too! I had suicidal ideation because that painful feeling would just not go away. It wasn’t brought on by the world, because I was very much out of the world. Since I have left, it is like a giant weight is off my shoulders,

I never yelled at them; I just ask to be put on the "Do not call." list. Now I'm in a controlled entry high-rise condo in a gated community. No JWs and no Mormons. Although, about 6 months ago I got a call from the JWs. I told the lady I wasn't interested in her cult, TVM and hung up.

Yes thats precisely true. I get elders ring me, some whom I NEVER actually met to say "can we come around" etc , but I just say, that wont be necessary. I'll call you when I want a visit. You need to be mentally tough unfortunately in the same way to resist sales callers/ spuikers etc on the phone. If you are weak and give in, well you may get badgered endlessly.

I have been out for about 20 years, but I still remember an elder giving a talk during the service meeting when he suggested looking at the obituaries in the local news paper and cross referencing the last names in the local phone book (small town, a long time ago) and calling on potential relatives of recently deceased people to call on them when they were "in a time of need". Disgusting.

I have a severe mental illness and have had many episodes of psychosis. For about 18 months I was regularly visited by a Jay-Dub woman. At first, I knew she wanted to convert me but we got to the point where I thought we had become good friends. She was so kind and caring and she knew how lonely and miserable I was. She promised me that she wouldn’t turn her back on me even if I became unwell and was mean to her. I did become unwell, but the main way I expressed it was to finally confess that I never intended to become a Jay-Dub. I told her that I really valued our friendship and hoped she would keep coming to see me. The next time I saw her, she was rushing to visit her dying Mum in hospital. I gave her a big hug and said “I was unwell when you last saw me”. She said “I know”. I haven’t heard from her since.

How do I get in contact with you!! I am from upstate New York lived in a town called Elmira… my parents became Jehovah’s Witnesses when I was of the age of 3… I had a traumatic childhood living with an abusive father, at the age of 14 my parents became divorced which led to my mother becoming disfellowshipped. My father continued to stay and still is giving himself to that organization and my sister recently went back into the religion and is now looking to become baptized… I am now 45 and I’ve lived with guilt for many years but I have managed on my own to keep reassure myself that I am a good a kind, loving, caring mother, sister, aunt and wife. But I would love to share my story and many of my friends who were Jehovah’s Witnesses and what they went through I know people that have committed suicide I know people who turned to drugs I know people who are alcoholics I’m still in contact with these people and they struggle as well… i’ve been to Bethel with my family when I was young we got invited I’ve seen so much… And if I never speak to you person to person I just want to say thank you!! Thank you for what you’re doing by bringing to light what going on in that organization… I feel like not just a house that was been lifted off my shoulders but the entire world has been lifted off my shoulders. And I for once in my life I truly feel peace with in my soul!!! Thank you for all you are doing my friend ❤️
