This isnt possible because it takes a couple months for scout, tenderfoot, 2nd class, and 1st class, that's about 6 months, then star scout, which is 6 months, then life scout, which is 6 months, so he'd be basically 12 for life, then its 6 months for eagle? So if I'm right he'd be 13

I am an Eagle Scout. Kylan Ouerbacker is not. I don't care about the time thing like most people do, the kid did it it 21 months where you only have to hold certain ranks for 10 months total. I get that; it's possible. The thing that makes me mad is that he said that Citizenship in the Nation was the hardest Merit Badge. CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION! He has Chemistry, Space Exploration, Pioneering, etc. and he says that Citizenship in the Nation is the hardest! Because it was hard "learning about the Constitution and doing all of the mailing the Senators" HE HAS THE LIFESAVING MERIT BADGE FOR GOODNESS SAKE! That requires you to know Safe Swim Defense, Reach Throw Row Go, how to identify victims and the stages of tiredness or drowning they are in, how to properly do a 20 second strip and use your shirt or pants to rescue someone, how to not become the second victim, how to save unconscious victims, how to treat a spinal injury, how to perform CPR, raise a 10 lbs. weight from 8-10 feet of water and lastly swim 400 yards with no breaks and he says that CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION was the hardest! I am a Lone Scout Counselor and Guide, Merit badge Counselor, District Training Committee members as well as The District Cub Scout training Chairman. I don't believe his advancement is right. In addition to the time requirement for each rank there is a service hours and camp-outs requirement as well as a leadership requirement and the merit badge time requirement. I added it up and at a min it takes 19 months just for time spent in each rank (based on listed time requirement in rank and a few of the badges required. He is claiming he did 60 merit badges in 1 year and 10 months.. I call cheating on his behalf by adults. This would have never made it through our Advancement Committee. As a proud Eagle Scout... it is impossible for an 11 year old to become an Eagle Scout, as it takes a month to reach tenderfoot due to a fitness requirement (improve on certain fitness tests over the course of a month). He would have had to somehow make it straight to first class in his first week. But hears the kicker: to reach eagle requires active service in high leadership positions for minimum of a year and a half to two years, plus 21-22 required merit badges minimum (some which require months to complete), as well as a total of at least 51 or 52 merit badges. Then there’s the Eagle Scout Service project... you have to be 11 years old to join the Boy Scouts, have completed the fifth grade to join the Boy Scouts, or 10 years old with the Arrow of Light Award received in Cub Scouts.

Two years exactly with the wait times, and 21 merit badges, if one does the math. They actually held my award for 5 days because I joined on my birthday May 5th. Maybe the timelines have shifted since then. Anyway, achieving the rank of Eagle is a great accomplishment for any young man, regardless of the amount of time that it takes to earn it. Technically this isn't legal according to BSA policies. The youngest you can join Scouts is 10 1/2 and he was 10 and two months when he joined. The only way he could join at 10 and two months is if he were to have already had completed the fifth grade (he would of had to skip a grade) or if his parents were really convincing.

I participated in Scouting for entire decade of the 70's, firstly one must be eleven to become a Boy Scout, and each rank has a minimum time before moving to the next rank beside meeting the requirements. The soonest one could possibly become a Eagle was two years. Second some merit badges took a great deal of time to meet the requirements some could take a year or more. plus the amount of leadership participation and community service required, unless things have changed greatly it's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to become an Eagle at eleven. Nobody could earn sixty merit badges in one year, I just can't understand this story, Boy Scouts don't lie and cheat.

Nobody ever wants to diminish a Scouts achievements, those of us in scouting know how much work it is. But I don’t know how it is humanly possible for an 11 year old to get an Eagle Scout. To begin with, a child cannot become part of a troop unless they are either 11 years old or has completed fifth grade. So unless he skipped a grade or two, he would have become part of the troop at the bare minimum of about 10 1/2 years old. Once you become part of the troop, even if you do nothing else but scouting activities, it takes a minimum of two years to earn Eagle Scout. That is because many of the eagle required merit badges and rank advancement have time requirements. At both tenderfoot and first class ranks, you have to spend a month tracking fitness requirements and keeping a daily log, and you cannot use one month of activities for both ranks. You have to do two separate months. Some ranks require you to wait six months between acquiring one, and then the other. There are six ranks before Eagle you must earn and all of them have some sort of requirement that takes time to do. Eagle required camping merit badge requires you to go on several campouts. Did this kid live in the woods for four months? Hiking and biking require 50-mile trips each. An 11year old did that? We usually have them get a little older before doing those for safety sake. I’m not suggesting he fudged some of his requirements but honestly I don’t know how he learned any of them and internalized any of them. Eagle Scout is not a race to finish. It’s a journey. My son is 11 and has been part of a troop for 5 months and he’s proceeding at a steady pace but one that ensures he’s actually learning and absorbing the material. His scoutmaster told me not yo let him go too fast, to let him savor the journey. You have until 18 years old. There’s plenty of time. I actually feel bad for this kid, that his scouting experience was so rushed, and abbreviated for the sake of some goal he thought he had to reach before anyone else that he missed out on so much of the experiences he could have had.

I've seen it happen all to often in my decades as a Scouter. BUT it may be that this scout set himself a goal, and worked his butt off. I've seen that too. If you crunch the numbers it's possible to fulfill the time in PORs given that a boy becomes a scout at 10 and a half. That gives the scout 18 months until he turns 12. I don't think it's the wisest thing to do perhaps. But it's possible. The Count Eagle class of '75

FACT CHECK: A scout may join when he has: Reached 11 years of age OR Achieved the Arrow Of Light and be 10 years of age OR Have finished 5th grade If he skipped a year of preschool or kindergarten, then he would be eligible to join at the age of 10 (assuming he had the Arrow Of Light). To achieve the Star rank, a scout must be a First Class for four months. To achieve the Life rank, a scout must be a Star for six months. To achieve the Eagle rank, a scout must be a Life for six months. Since according to him, he went from Scout -> Eagle in 19 months, he would have to have gone from Scout rank to First Class in a period of 3 months. This is plausible.

Congratulations to the kid first of all. But, I don't feel as if he truly earned it right. You're supposed to be in Scouts for years. You need the experience. I earned my Eagle Scout award when I was 16. I completely loved it. But, it takes time. To all the fellow Eagle Scouts here, how do you feel about this? Do you remember all the great campouts? The bad ones? Do you remember your first summer camp? Remember when you chaffed and you had to walk like a cowboy? Remember when you finally earned your Totin Chip? These were all great experiences and memories. Remember how great you felt when you got the rank of First Class and you felt amazing? Or how about when you were voted to be a SPL? There was just so much in my 8 years of scouting that I wish I could repeat. And I feel as if this young man didn't experience it all. I mean, don't get me wrong. That's one heck of a title to have under your belt. But, it went way too fast for him. I also feel as if there was some things that was written down that shouldn't have. As I recall you had to be an active member for 6 months every time you promoted to the next rank. So, I'm not too sure what to say! Haha, does any of my fellow Eagle Scouts agree?

I earned Eagle Scout this past June the day after I turned 17. The youngest Eagle Scout in my troop I can remember was 15, and that was because his parents pushed him along the way in everything he did. Scouting is also much more enjoyable with the camping and teaching others the skills you learned. I was only an assistant Senior patrol leader to date, so I plan to run for the top position this fall when we have our elections. There is a 6 month wait, so something is up here.

I earned the eagle award at 13 in 2015, since then i have helped 3 other scouts earn there eagle award and have gone to philmont with some of my best friends and fellow eagles. He had 65 MBs on this? i don't see an 11 yearold mature, or actually earning something so difficult so young. Plus his dad is scoutmaster.... like seriously?

Absolutely, My apologies for breaking the 11th point of the Scout Law, but I call bullshit on this one. I earned my Eagle Scout rank at the age of 16. Just like you, I remember all of my experiences as they made me the person I am today. I remember being elected Patrol Leader for my 1985 Jamboree patrol. I remember surviving Hurricane Bob. I suspect it was a combination of parents and a Scout leader rushing him through the requirements. It's not one and done, nor sash and dash like I would call Scouts who would go through their OA ordeal just to get the sash and lodge flap. It's about the journey along the way. I guarantee you I would have never passed this kid on his Eagle board of review. Come back when you've notched more Scouting experiences under your belt.

So let's do the math. He started at 10yrs and 2 months and completed at 11 yrs and 11 months. That is a total of 21 months. Star, Life and Eagle minimum time is 16 months. So this scout went through Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class and 1st Class in a total of 3 months. An extremely active scout is usually 1st class after his 1st year of scoutting. After that it's 4 months for star, 6 months for life then 6 months for eagle. This scout went from Scout to 1st Class in 3 months. Looking at how this scout was advanced shows that this was not a "scout" led troop. More of dad's agenda.
@blackmangopit5 жыл бұрын
Agreed; I'm not against young Eagles but I hope the Council really scrutinized his progress. No one can start merit badges without 1. being enrolled in a troop, 2. with scoutmaster approval first, 3. 3 Eagle badges are minimum 90 days for requirements. Either this kid is really a go-getter and mature and very good student with no other activities and did it all on his own or Dad the scoutmaster helped out a lot. That's against the whole notion of growing into leadership. How is a young almost 12 year old going to show leadership to 16-17 year old scouts? He basically started at end of 5th grade and finished before the end of 7th grade. I really think the whole notion of trying to be the youngest Eagle is ridiculous. On another note, it is possible if you're rushing through and if you have a really small troop. But in the end, what have you learned? Our troop is over 100 kids registered and it's hard going through the ranks even with so many people to work with on requirements and an active outdoor program. I hope he's still in his troop giving leadership to younger scouts now.
@JohnThomas-xl2ro11 ай бұрын
He’s a fake Eagle Scout. As others have pointed out, you have to spend minimum times in leadership positions - the earliest you could legitimately earn it is around 13 and that would be a stretch.
@jennhudson9126 жыл бұрын
Does anyone not keep a copy of the guide to advancement handy anymore? It clearly lays out the guidelines. Good job to Kylan! Granted the leadership growth he could have achieved by spreading out his trail to Eagle may have been lessened strengthened, he is still in scouting as he is looking for his next goal to accomplish. Otherwise a 10 year old that was adequately prepared for the first four ranks could earn them very fast even with the time requirements of keeping physical fitness logs for tenderfoot, 2nd and 1st class (this would take just over 3 months to complete). He would have to have completed his fitness test immediately upon entering his troop then follow the 30 day log for tenderfoot and get it signed off and so on for 2nd class (4 weeks) and 1st class (at 4 weeks). Once first class is achieved he has his active participation requirements in the troop that others have mentioned for star, life and eagle. Within those time-frames he also has to get the merit badges finished where he would have had to do the longer period ones (family life, personal management, physical fitness that have 90 log requirements) started immediately. The main issue is leadership time and in a large troop which I fail to see how this was done without some form of adult influence (yes I know his father is the scoutmaster). He is a good public speaker so his statement could have been that good. I've seen it at troop elections before. If the troop was small, he very well could have gotten the right position of responsibility for each of his ranks rather easily instead of say 15 scouts vying for 8 positions of responsibility. After all of that is completed, he has his eagle award requirements. A scout with good resources whether it is their SM, merit badge counselor, advancement chair, or their parents is essential on helping keep any scout on track to earn Eagle when he feels he should. Kylan is dedicated no question there. My son's den together came up with a plan for their webelos program that beyond doing the rank requirements they wanted to go through the first year scout program as well. 4 of the 5 really worked it hard with the support of 4 den leaders and myself as Cubmaster. We signed things off per the Guide but also went through the motions on how they needed to learn, demonstrate, and show the skill or explain an aspect of some requirement (they had to visit different den leaders for things). Most of the boys were 10 1/2 when they joined their respective troops. 4 received scout in a month, and 1 received tenderfoot 2 months later and another 2 earned Tenderfoot in 4 months. What they got in cub scouts and I can assume Kylan got was an understanding of having to approach the SM, ASM, or a 1st class or above scout to go over requirements to show completion. Knowing that makes a huge difference. It also helps to be at an established troop that has strong leaders on the program and committee side (Its allowed me to just be a merit badge counselor and LNT trainer-and it is so wonderful to let him do everything on his own) . The other parts with gaining the leadership and being recognized as being a scout capable of leadership does take time and is something the scout must earn by being active in his patrol and troop. My son has already pushed back his goal of reaching Eagle by a year (He wanted it at 14) simply because he is getting into the leadership opportunities in staffing council activities, volunteering for service projects, and helping out in the troop. This also takes into account he has most of the longer time requirements badges completed (he has 4 Eagle merit badges left to earn). He is waiting til he is 13 to do NYLT and he stated he can't be Eagle til he completes that training and completes the goals he sets for himself there. He is also determined to get into the OA which he said at that point it'll take him longer to do Eagle because he will want to offer service to his lodge. So his original goal of 14 may not happen but it still could if he decides to because he was and is focused on getting those requirements checked off and doing that the right way. Whether the adults fast tracked the process for this scout we probably won't know but he did it and got what he wanted out of the program.

Sad, very sad. What did this Scout really learn, except gaming the system? This is the result of parents doing the merit badge work and Scout leaders not held accountabie. 1 year and 9 months is not enough time to learn the positions of responsibility or do justice to 21 merit badges. The Scouting movement is hurt by crazy parents....

I don’t agree with awarding the eagle rank to soon. He is only 11 and has a lot of scouting ahead of him. I had my eagle board of review after my 18th birthday. I spent time at each rank gaining maturity.
@Orrimarrko666 жыл бұрын
4 months are required between First Class and Star, 6 months between Star and Life, and 6 months between Life and Eagle. That's 1 year and 4 months. If you started at age 11, you couldn't become an Eagle before you turned 12. At the time of this video (2015 - and he obviously earned it prior to then), the earliest you could become a Boy Scout would be 10 1/2 with the Arrow of Light. That would mean that he would have had to have finished with less than 2 months before turning 12. Considering both Personal Fitness and Personal Management each take 3 months to complete, he'd have to have started them really early. And I'm not sure what 'earns all badges' means to FOX, but there are over 130, and he has 60.

Coming from a 17-year-old Life Scout who is a project and two (mostly completed) merit badges away from Eagle, I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no-fucking-way this kid achieved Eagle Scout 19 months after entering Boy Scouts. I'm sorry. There had to be some sort of adult influence that helped him breeze through requirements that would otherwise have kept him waiting longer. Far as I'm concerned, each requirement met (for both merit badges and ranks) should be 100% legitimate. So... No matter what it says on paper, I'm quite certain you're not a real Eagle Scout. 🤷

Why are so many people complaining about this great accomplishment? You can join Boy Scouts if you are 10 years old and finished 5th grade or have earned the Arrow of Light. He obviously did that. He was in the program for 21 months before getting his Eagle which is more than enough to fulfill the time in rank requirements. Every merit badge counselor has promised to ensure that the boys actually do the requirements pertaining to that merit badge. Don't you think the National Council would have rejected the application if there were errors, omissions, or other irregularities? I think we should take a step back and say "Good job!" If you think he was too young, then maybe BSA should make a requirement that the candidate must be at least 15 years old too.
@whobutwbmarci52005 жыл бұрын
I think an age requirement is stupid, a 13 or 14-year old who worked his butt off to get to Eagle should be able to earn it because he is probably more mature and more of a scout than a slacker who gets it at 17 and a half. PS, thanks for your service.
@katieholets22168 жыл бұрын
It isn't possible to make eagle in the course of a year! There are time requirements for a star, life, and eagle that take up a whole year and a half to do! And the camping requirements, he would've lost all the weekends of his 10 year old life! ALSO, there are merit badges that take months to finish, so unless he cut corners and forged signatures, this kid lied about it! FINALLY, YOU CAN'T EVEN START BOY SCOUTS UNTIL YOU ARE ALMOST DONE WITH FIFTH GRADE!!!

@bma0510007 жыл бұрын
No one said he did do it in a year. Consider: He starts scouting on 10th birthday, spends 23 months fulfilling requirements. You're almost 12, but technically, legally 11. Also, you can start work on MB requirements BEFORE you start scouting and time-in-grade ranks only add up to 17 months. 10 years old + 17 months= 11 years and 7 months old. The math doesn't contradict. You just need to read the fine print.

The absolute minimum time is 16 months after First Class. He said he took 21 months. So he made First Class in five months, apparently. That seems possible, since there is no time requirement between ranks prior to earning First Class, but contrary to the spirit of Scouting.

Amen to those who realize this is a fake Eagle. My husband was District Advancement chairman for many years. He had a 13 year old approach him for an Eagle Board of Review. This caused him to do the math to see if there was enough time for this scout to meet the requirements -- at 13! Any Scout who is as young as this boy simply did this as a checklist and his adult leaders cut a bunch of corners. He is indeed a fake and cheapens this title for EVERYONE else who earned this rank.
@pianofry11383 жыл бұрын
For all the people saying this is "technically" impossible you are wrong! It is entirely possible to get all of the service hours, time in rank, and badges within 1.5 years and the requirements pre-2015 were even easier than today. My troop didn't have enough camping to advance too far in the first year but some troops do. Now, I don't believe you should be able to earn Eagle that fast because certain experiences only come with time. You could learn all the first aid the BSA teaches in a day. But how well will it be applied? I can't remember which one is the motto or slogan half the time and I certainly can't remember the Outdoor Code but experience means I can apply them. First Aid isn't something you can just know what to say so I think anyone under 13(all ages probably) should have to prove they can apply the skills they learn.
@notaname10003 жыл бұрын
Ok, to be clear, there are no time requirements for Scout to First Class. Star has a four month requirement, Life and Eagle both have six months. Three of the merit badges have three month requirements, but they can be done at the same time. THAT BEING SAID, this is way too rushed.

FOR EVERYONE ABOUT TO COMMENT: THIS SCOUT DID IN FACT COMPLETE EAGLE TIME REQUIREMENTS ADD UP TO ROUGHLY A YEAR AND HE WAS A SCOUT FOR A YEAR AND 9 MONTHS. He probably did merit badges throughout his time and he is the youngest Eagle Scout. HOWEVER this is not the scouting way, we don’t simply rush kids through to get Eagle. We encourage them to grow and learn and develop leadership. You learn from experiences in scouting and although he may be of a higher rank, that means nothing to us scouts. Experience counts for everything and I’d much rather have an 18 yr old tenderfoot than an 11 yr old Eagle Scout.

It is too young IMO, however, it is possible. You can join Scouts if you have completed the 5th grade or completed your arrow of light and are 10 years old, he says he joined at 10 and earned his Eagle at 11 and 10 months, so he was an active Scout for about 20-22 months. He could have earned his first class in a couple short months if he was really at it and went to some summer camps, etc., after first class he would only need 16 months to earn Eagle if he was really at it. Time wise it was possible.

no way this kid got it, there are waiting periods between Star, Life, and Eagle, which are 4, 6, and 6 months. so you need to be in scouting for at least 18+ months to get Eagle, so if you join at 10 and a half, you can be earning it as young as 12, personally I got it young at 14 years and 2 months.
