I tried this setup and it did NOT work for grey squirrels - the instant the squirrel triggers the trap, gravity sends it tumbling away from the squirrel and he gets a whack on the head but isn't caught. I set traps about 18 times and this just kept happening. Ultimately, I got a "squirrellinator" which worked beautifully and is so much easier (though I don't know how it compares to other live traps).

The better way to make a blind set would be to set it up like this with a pan and a couple small limbs that hover above the trap. They will try to move under the limbs because there is a clear opening. Once they step on the pan, the trap goes off. I love the securing method!

How about 4 roofing nails instead ?

This seems better than carrying nails to me

Yea and if you move the trap you can easily take the sticks with you, unlike nails which you'd have to leave and redo or pry out.
