Your story touched my heart. It brought to mind Nellie, a lady in our Bible study in a similar condition as Johnny. However she could not speak. She insisted on living on her own with nursing aids going in to assist her, even though she could have lived with her parents but they were elderly. One of us would pick her up & one of us would take her back home to her apt. We would get her ready for bed. I still remember rubbing her feet a time or two with peppermint lotion. She had been in an auto accident when going to visit a college she was considering. Nellie not only finished college but finished graduate work to become a minister. She could not speak & had an electric board where she could use a finger to press keys & a voice from the board spoke her thoughts. When it was not working, she used a lettered wood board, pointing to letters & someone would sit beside her to tell us what she wanted to tell us. She preached once a month at the Methodist Church & someone would read her sermon. She made them practice until it was what she wanted to say. We all knew in our Bible study when Nellie indicated she wanted to "speak", it would be important. Occasionally, Nellie wanted us to hear her sermon & a long time friend would read it. Powerful for sure. Eventually Nellie had to move to a nursing home & I got to visit with her before I moved to a different city. She was still sharing her wisdom of the Bible & her love of God & His goodness. When I knew Nellie she was in her forties & then early fifties.

I don't know. I feel like those "new friends" of Johnny's had something to do with his death... perhaps he was drug influenced.

Pat, I am a new viewer to your channel. I watched you make potato salad yesterday, and I was hooked. You asked us what we would have done had we been in your shoes. I can only hope that I would have attempted to help Johnny. Thank you for being gracious and kind to him. You know, I read my Bible and attend services regularly, but hearing your story might be the very best example I've ever heard of practicing the Golden Rule.

Rest easy Johnny. He will indeed be missed. 🙏🕊️ I think he was blessed to have a good neighbor as yourself, and you were blessed to have gotten to know him, assist him, cook for him, and visit him. May you find comfort in remembering the good times as neighbors, that you both shared together. ♥️🌹

Miss Pat, thank you for sharing your heart today and blessing us with this story. I believe that God offers us opportunities to serve one another constantly. Most of the times when we think we're helping and blessing someone else, it's really ourselves that receive the lesson and the blessing. How exceptional we would consider each mundane task if we could just remember those who can't do these things for themselves. Johnny's life continues to serve others by way of your storytelling. Tonight, as I get myself ready for bed, doing the mundane tasks of my routine, I will pause and thank God for all of my abilities and for the wonders of my healthy body.

Thank you for sharing this story. I found myself crying at the end. As heartbreaking as your story is, you can be at peace knowing you were generous in giving of your time and talents to help Johnny in ways you were able. I believe Johnny called on you to help him that first night because he knew you were a kind person and a kindred spirit. I believe God put you right there to be a blessing to Johnny and you heeded God’s call. I only hope if I’m ever in the situation to help someone like Johnny I would answer the call as you did. Your story made me reflect on how much the ability to do the simple things in life I sometimes take for granted. You’re right - our abilities to care for ourselves can be gone in an instant and we could find ourselves in a similar situation as Johnny. Thank you for sharing your story. I know it was difficult for you to relay the story but you have blessed many, including myself.

Awww. Sending love and hugs to you from Milford, OH. You and I have similar hearts. I have always loved people and animals and wit all the junk I have had go on in my life it seems that helping others helps me way more than any therapy session I have had. I am very empathetic and feel what others feel and my heart cries right along (or whichever emotion). You were an Angel sent to him! I want you to realize that. You are an Angel to us too. So glad I found your channel. ❤

I guess God put you in my path on this internet thing for a reason. I got so much out of your message. Im glad i found your channel. Im going to subscribe and wait for more of your wonderful stories. I think we all ask “why”… as we get older and have enough life experiences. I think it’s normal. I think Johnny looked at you as a mother and “family” and you have him great comfort and security and joy. That’s a beautiful gift. Don’t question it. I love you. I don’t know you… but. Can tell you’re a genuine person who loves and cares and that is so rare in this day and age. Please keep sharing your stories. In days of old, we would learn from our elders and listen and then we would know what to do … how to act… some people don’t realize these things! You are touching many people.

I'm looking at the moon tonight too. Clouds are passing in front of it. I would have helped in any way I could too. I just wonder why your friend wouldn't have asked a man to help him to get ready for bed. But he must have known how a woman would be more tenderhearted, therefore he picked you. We don't know what thoughts are in one's head or how discouraged they are. Sometimes life overwhelms people. People of all ages. He seemed to be content but you never know what a friend may have said, that just hit him hard. No one knows but him, most likely. Some folks have too much pain, to continue on. That could be physical pain, mental pain or spiritual pain. If they don't reach out for help it can end in tragedy. I know if you knew his pain, his turmoil, you would be a great listening hear & would help that way too. Sadly, he just didn't want to reach out. You were a great friend, no doubt about that, Pat. Glad you shared this story. ❤

This story is important to share, even though it is sad. I happen to be an Occupational Therapist and we can do so much to help people live independently, but what people don't realize is how isolated those with disabilities are. The mental health also has to be addressed. I'm sorry for the loss of Johnny and I agree with your frustration about not being able to work, or losing what little benefits they receive. I have known many who want to have jobs, but they can't risk losing their caretakers. I could share many similar stories, don't even get me started on people who park in the handicap spaces "for just a minute." Thanks for the reminder to consider all aspects including mental health when addressing patients needs. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I just took our 15 year old mutt out about 3:30am, to do his business. There wasn't any action on his part, but I gave him the opportunity anyway. We cut him a lot of slack since he's been with us for these past 15 years. I did have a chance to look at that beautiful full moon. When you first spoke about looking out your window at that moon, the first thing that came to my mind was "Blue Moon over Kentucky" by Bill Monroe. I realize this morning wasn't a blue moon but the song is a little blue. In the circumstance you described, I would have also had to help Johnny out with his problem. My heart wouldn't have allowed for the alternative. Some times in life we just have to play the cards we have before us. No re-shuffle, no re-deal, just play the cards in our hand. Pat, some time back you spoke about telling some sad stories. Well girl, you knocked this one out of the park. But I'm so glad you did. Hearing things like this are uncomfortable and challenging. But it helps us to focus a little more on what things are actually important in this life. Thank you for sharing this story and thank you for the kindness & friendship you extended towards Johnny. Psalm 25:4-6... "Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old." I couldn't make it through your video without crying nor finishing my comments. Congratulations on hitting the 9,000 subscriber mark! They're popping up like weeds in the garden. Pat I wish you, Jan & Nina all the best on your treasure hunt through the yard sale.

Pat, Thank you for sharing about Johnny. I am so glad you did. What would I had done? Try to be a friend like you were to him. You made him laugh so you not only helped him with some of his physical needs, you treated him like a friend does, ribbing occasionally etc… I am saddened he chose suicide 😢 When I miss someone I loved…family or friend…I (being a Christian) tell myself they are at the party having a blast. It’s not my time yet, but when I get there the party will be so much fun! In Johnny’s case I would add that upon entering heaven I would tell Johnny he was going to get a swift spanking for doing what he did. But then hug him and tell him “I am so glad to see you, you have been missed”. I hope you have a great time this weekend with Jan and your friend Nina (sp)

Listening to Granny Pat talking makes tears come to my eyes, because she makes me think so much of my own dear Mama, who took me to love and care for when my birth mother made it plain that she had neither time nor love to spare for me. Her mother became my Mama and I don't know what would have become of me if Mama hadn't stepped in to take care of a curious, intelligent child who asked a thousand questions a day. Mama always had a patient answer and never became short-tempered or mean, never slapped me just for asking a question, always was ready with a smile and a kiss, her lips warm and sweet against my tender cheek. I lost Mama many years ago and I miss her just as much tonight as I did the day she flew to Heaven. I know she is in the presence of the Most High God, praising Him and singing with the angels. Oh, how I look forward to seeing her again!

Johnny surely loved you for being his friend and helping him get ready for bed each evening. The food you shared with Johnny was such a blessing he appreciated it more than you know. Pat theyve always said the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. No doubt he loved you and probably felt like you were his substitute mom. He was blessed to have such a caring and compassionate friend in you and you were also very blessed to have made his acquaintsnce and become his friend. Pat, you will be blessed for the rest of your life by God for these good deeds. I know it was hard for you to tell this story but lm so grateful you did. The lessons learned here are incredible food for thought. Due to a rollover mva, l am also completely dependent upon another human being for the daily activities of living. My husband of 14 years this past Wed, 29 Nov is my caretaker and he helps me do everything and we have extra help come in occasionally to help us out with cooking and cleaning house. Many hugs to you Granny Pat for sharing your stories with us. This story about Johnny really touched my heart. I cried for him. I would love to have been able to be his friend cause lm a very caring and compassionate individual that was put on earth to show love and kindness to everyone l meet/see. What a blessing you were to him but he didn’t even understand that he was a blessing to you. People like Johnny give us the gift of consciousness. As humans we are on such an unconscious track of life so often and are running a daily program. You were indeed a friend to him, probably much better than those closer in age to him, he needed a kind person whom he wouldn't be AS humiliated with as his Peers, you were able to Allow him some dignity, and yet no matter what it would always be an awkward situation for everyone involved, You should remember you did as much as you were able and he Appreciated your generosity and sweet spirit. His struggles were his own, and he didn't want to feel sorry for himself and he couldn't change the way other people looked at him and mostly he couldn't accept the way he Saw Himself. Miss, Pat, you did an extraordinary thing! Most of us would say we would do the same, but faced with a true situation, few of us would follow through. What would I have done? I don't know. I do know that when someone decides to not face life any longer, there are few things that can help. For the time you spent with Johnny, he had glimmers of joy. You touched his life, and he touched yours . perhaps you have heard this quote: “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.” ― Flavia Despite his choosing his end, you each put footprints on each other's heart.

Hi Granny Pat, I know it takes a big heart and compassion to help someone incapacitated. When my Mother had a stroke and became unable to take care of herself...I told my Dad I would help out and took 1 year off from work on Family Leave. My elder sibling decided to put my Mother in a Nursing Home...then my Father too. 😢

Montana Belle with Jame Russell My Sweetheart is the man in the Moon. I can't say if I would be able to help John. I probably would look for a man to help him. Especially since you didn't know him that well. But there is something very special about you. Just like I could never have the occupation of being a nurse. To me you were an angel sent to him and you helped him in so many ways that you will never know.

What a story. I have a big ❤ too. Sometimes that’s a good thing and bad. I think about stuff like falling down stairs and breaking my neck all the time and being a burden to my daughter. It’s the simple things like brushing my teeth I take for granted. Your the best Granny Pat. Have fun tomorrow. Look forward to your videos. Let me edit my post and say I’m sorry that Johnny felt he had to take his life. We never know how to walk in another man’s shoes.

I admire you. I have looked after so many people with MS, cancer, dementia, you name it, in wheel chairs and walking and it makes their day if they find kindness and cheer, it's alright to cry, you are beautiful where it counts, inside and out

I think this memory is lovely. I think Johnny was blessed to have met you and that you were blessed in return. Then, you son’s experience was a true learning curve. Same car? Unbelievable. Your son is probably a better person from that time in his life. Wish everyone could have your son’s experience and learn from that time.❤️🙏carson

Thank God for people like you. I believe we meet the souls we are suppose to meet and experience in our lives ...good experience or hard. Those are lessons for all involved. I would have done what you did. I could not stand thinking of him suffering if I could help. I just tear up thinking of that situation and I am so grateful to you for your pure, kind heart. Biggest Hugs in the world to you. 😪
