You should NOT decide between 340i vs 340d based on power, torque and consumption, but based on your driving profile! The 340d needs almost double time to get warm, doesn’t like cold short rides, and due to egr/dpf needs sometimes rpm. It is efficient once warm and likes long higher rpm runs (german autobahn). If you gonna drive 340d in city on a short cold rides or constantly around 1200 rpm without proper motorway run, the engine will be dead before 200k km. I understand, that a first leasing owner doesn’t care, but I just wanted to add few words as a owner of an 2017 f31 330d with 300k+ km.

I've had my M340i for two years now. I don't do many miles which is why I chose the petrol over the diesel. I commute 2 days a week into London about 25 miles each way. Even in heavy rush hour traffic and queuing for the Blackwall tunnel I can still get 30 mpg over an hours journey and on a good day can get 36. On a rare long trip from Leeds to Kent I managed 47.7 mpg. Not bad for a 3litre petrol.

Love all of Joe’s videos my only issue with not just these kind of tests but car testing in general is performance is ALWAYS solely measured or at least displayed in 0-60/62 drag races. Which for cars you’re going to drag race (so probably neither of these) is all good. I wish they’d show more kind of real word performance in car videos. In gear speed, overtaking ability. 90% of people who buy cars like this use them on the motorways or back roads and want to know which is more competent for overtaking ‘Sunday Sammy’s’ who are happy cruising at 45 on a 60 road but the road might not have many straights so need to utilise the one chance they might get over the next 2-3 miles of bends. Tests like those for me are part of what define great performance cars.
@302ci1968 Жыл бұрын
A long time ago, a French Speaking car magazine used to put, with the oure solo performance figures, an "overtaking" measure: the time necessary to pass a big truck driving at xx mph or km/h and the distance. And it was -not surprisingly- one of the most interesting measure. So, you're right, we need real life performance ;)
@andrewhurstcars Жыл бұрын
Great comparison Joe. The other advantage for high-mileage users for the M340d is having the 30% + extra range, so fewer fill-ups ⛽️. Ultimately it’s down to the owner’s mileage. M340i seems fine you’re doing less than 12,000 miles a year, but I’d want the M340d for more miles than that. Crazy that active cruise control is standard on a Golf, but an option on these 3 series. Should be standard. Edit: August '23 the diesel price has now equalised to petrol, so an even stronger case for the M340d.

The diesel is also better at highway driving, not just MPG, but in a higher gearbox speed, that extra torque of the engine really makes a difference when accelerating/overtaking another car.
@boemher15 Жыл бұрын
Id dispute that in this contest. The kick down on the ZF8 for the B58 and quick spool up for the petrol negates the torque advantage of the diesel. Remember HP x RPM beats NM especially when the ratios are close.

So I will get maybe a M340i , when budget allows it ofcourse next year or in 2 years (I'm between the C43 and this), like you said the diesel is good for people who drive a lot and the m340i for people who drive less, since I don't even drive 6k Kilometers per year the Petrol sounds like ultimate fun and ofcourse the Toyota Certified Engine in there... Still can't believe the Petrol does 6l and the Diesel 5l , those are big 3l engines with crazy HP! The RS3 with 400hp can't go under 10l , I'll tell you for sure that, so this is eye opening

@@ace_55581 diesel more economical for sure, but no way its double the fuel economy. If you're driving to get 58 mpg average from a 340d you'd be getting high 30's from the i . My 340i averages 31.5 and that's with majority short trips in a hilly area, so 27/28 seems overly pessimistic.

Extra 20p a litre for diesel makes the running costs very similar. 100 miles would cost £14.88 in the diesel and £17.62 for the petrol with the figures you achieved. What you didn’t consider though, I think 90% of the m340i owners will probably fill with e5/super unleaded, where probably majority atleast of m340d owners will buy normal diesel (I find cheap petrol burns WAY quicker in this car and get a lot higher mpg (around 5) with Tesco momentum against cheaper petrol)… taking that into consideration might make even more sense for the diesel cost wise per mile…. Also what will depreciate more though 🤷♂️ my bet would be the diesel depreciating more than the petrol ⛽️ but who knows?

I think an additional point to make is that these cars are both performance orientated and owners of these will inevitably drive them at pace. The MPG test driving normally proves a valid point but if you were to drive the same route at pace and having fun, accelerating hard etc, the 340d would be even more impressive and the fuel efficiency percentage difference would be even greater. My take is that 340d is essentially a marketed product for regular autobahn users, so for me, living in the UK, I think I would opt for an M340i.....In Tanzanite blue😃👍

Just returned from a 4600km (3000m) road trip in my 340d across the UK and Germany. In the UK I averaged 5.2l/100km (54mpg) with a mixture of motorway and spirited B road driving. In Germany I averaged 7.1l/100km (40mpg) on the autobahn, travelling at about 180-200km/h (112-125mph) where conditions allowed. My previous car was a turbo petrol, where the consumption seemed to go up exponentially as you increase speed. The diesel consumption seems to be more linear, so the benefits of running a diesel in countries with higher speed limits are even clearer.

I've seen a lot of M340i Sedan vs M440i GC, but there's very little, if any videos comparing the 2 and 4 door B58 3/4 series models, it's something i'm personally deciding between (and a few others online), and i'm really struggling to find any real comparisons.
@jankohrajko Жыл бұрын
I personally think that a huge plus going for M440i GC is the fact that you have a fifth door and thus much more usable boot space. I can see myself stucking a mountain bike into the 440i however the same would be impossible with the 3 series.

Excellent video, thanks. The very important is reliability, just yesterday discussed it with AD here. They told they haven't had a single 40i failed, while having about the same fail rate for 30d/40d as for 20d. Really didn't expect that.

I have been running a M340d touring for just over a year ( previously ran the 335d touring for over 4 years ). Never had anything go wrong on the previous car, but the electronics on the M340d have been a little glitchy. One of the exhaust sensors went after 9 months, the head up display has decided not to work occasionally. Most recently the wipers have intermittently decided to turn themselves on when switched off. The car itself is beautiful to drive, like Joe eluded to, it is effortless and very refined returning an average 40.5mpg ( used mostly for shorter journeys ). It doesn't quite have the fun factor of the 335d.

During the fuel crisis I got 71mpg over 103 miles with my pre LCI G21 M340d in adaptive driving mode and 730 miles out of that 1 tank of fuel (with photo evidence of the driving data). Can't ever get it lower than 32mpg with heavily 'spirited' driving. For a car that Joe has proven can also do 0-60 in 4.69, and never feels like it runs out of diesel 'puff' and still sounds bloody good (don't get me wrong I'd love the M340i exhaust note) the engine with the mild hybrid is an absolute masterclass of engineering.

Great review as always joe . Here in Ireland 🇮🇪 cars are wildly more expensive than in the uk . That diesel 340d touring your driving is €100,000 and the 340i touring is €107,000 which equates to roughly £88000 and £95000 . For perspective the money you pay for these in the uk would buy a bmw 128ti hot hatch oh and the new m3 touring costs €160000 here because of a luxury car vat tax . Depressing or what 😢

@@odin5188 well I suppose it depends on people circumstances.a 2 year old 340i would still cost €78000 ( there are 4 in the country) Pcp has become a big thing . Car leasing is not a thing here at all . I myself have a mk8 gti but it's €55000 here . I seen a high spec golf R the other day €93000 . You'll see loads of new 5 series E class etc ,the odd m3 or porche 911 ,quite a few taycan s actually but anything considered high end is loaded with tax . Insurance for young people is insane. I use my pano roof for 3 things. When it’s raining, in a car wash - kids love those things. And to check if my bikes are still there (most important benefit). Aside from that it adds significantly more noise - if cover is open. Personally I’d not bother with it next time. Better off having a more spacious interior and potentially improving handling

Not 100% sure on this, but I think the weight difference is mostly in the gearbox, not the engine block as the B57 and B58 blocks are very similar. The diesel uses the HP70 gearbox from ZF (indicating it's higher torque threshold of 700Nm), whereas the petrol uses a HP50 from ZF.

I drove M340i and besides sound I don't see anything better, in day to day drive M340 feels and is simply faster. Yes with proper preparation m340i will pass over M340d but like I wrote i normal driving diesel is simply more capable. Thank You Joe for Yours review as now I can be happy owner of such great car.

Personally the M340d is better. I’ve only ever driven the petrol briefly and I noticed not every time but on occasions it downshifts if you go to floor it in gear to find the torque. Where haven been shotgun in my parents X3 M40d that torque is just there whatever the gear, which for real world driving is what you want. Don’t get me wrong the gear boxes are fantastic in these cars but I just prefer the way the power train works in the diesel. Sound, you’ll only ever hear in the cabin when it’s your car anyway so it’s not a game changer imo. You buy a car for sound and drag performance you’d just go for an M2 or M3

The m340i was brilliant and I loved it, so if you have one, don’t sell it! If you’re buying one, be prepared for the fuel bill. Yes it “can” be economical, but it’s not a car to drive economically.

Loved the MPG test, I've been waiting for someone to do a real world comparison like this for ages now. Quite shocked by the result - I expected 10-15% difference, max. For anyone interested, the 34% difference in MPG and the assumed 15% difference in fuel price equates to the M340d costing ~14% less per mile to run.

have you taken into consideration the depreciation also? People start to move from diesel to petrol. Diesel already lost a huge % of the market share. Now it's around 30%, but 10 years ago it was around +50%. So you may find that when you take in consideration the resale value, the difference to be equal or even worse vs a petrol car.
@i.c.d.-videos1901 Жыл бұрын
@@silimarina. Hello, In short, yes I have considered resale values. You are correct that the market of diesel cars sales is shrinking due to many factors. If you driver over 10,000 miles a year then the savings in fuel costs should start to add up. A trend seen so far in 2023 is the cost of diesel fuel growing / gapping when compared to petrol. If this continues then the petrol would be a more positive choice financially.
