In my view the best 111mm is the Outrider, saw, scissors and in-line Phillips screwdriver. Originally with the side- lock, now with a liner lock, it is an excellent pocket tool. The Spirit is a fantastic tool, even more “pocketable” than wider 111 mm tools. Mine nearly took over from my usual Huntsman/ Farmer X!

That opening hole bump actually enhances grip when sawing-for many who use the saws a lot. A marlin spike for self-defense? A trained pressure point expert, maybe. Otherwise, RUN! Love those 111mm liner lock models too. And the 130mm. Thanks for posting. Cheers!

Thanks for the video. I have a few 91 and 93 alox. My recent acquisition is my first 111mm which is the Picnicker and to be honest it's my new favorite. I love the size of the blade and it fits in the hand very nicely. Now I'm looking on getting my next 111mm but with your video I just learned that serrated blade with chisel grind won't work for me because I'm a lefty, meaning I will be slicing and using the blade on the wrong side. Nice collection btw! Cheers! I will start looking for 111mm on the non-serrated blade only.

I only recently starting buying 111mm SAKS, a month ago I bought on Ebay a new in box rare Garant Nomad model with blue plus scales for $63 + shipping & have added it to my daily Gentleman's knife rotation of 93mm Pioneers / X's & 84mm Cadets . Today I put in an order on Ebay for a new in box & now rare discontinued side slide lock version of the 111mm Outrider in Black for $70 + shipping. I have for decades been a SAK collector & user but never ventured into the 111mm models & stuck to 58mm, 84mm, 85mm & 91mm models. The Outrider will fit into my PTK ( Pocket Tool Kit ) rotation which consists of a modified 91mm Huntsman ( IMO the Outrider is the nearest 111mm equivalent of it) & my other PTK SAK's are the 85mm Evolution EvoGrip S17 & S18. Probably I will not be buying anymore 111mm's as I have large number of Pioneers & X's & I don't really use them as a self defense knife anyway, for that I have a Microtech style 3.5 inch OTF knife .

The marlin spike is not two pieces riveted, it is one piece made by a process known as MIM or metal injection molding. Basically powdered metal pressed into a mold and then removed from a mold and fired in a furnace to bond all of the particles into one piece without completely melting it. Hence you see the remnants of a parting line from the mold and the ejector pins are what pushes it free from the mold which leaves the little rivet looking circles.
@edwardfletcher7790 Жыл бұрын
Ahhhh good intel 👍 Is MIM the process used for many MultiTool plier heads too ? It's used because you can create a more complex part than with drop forging right ? Does it tend to be a brittle part due to the crystalline structure of the metal ? Sorry for all the Q's, I've been wondering about this technique for years....
@cgprecision Жыл бұрын
@@edwardfletcher7790 Yes it is the same process used on multi tools. The metallurgists claim there is no loss in ductility in this process but I have my reservations. Never broken a MIM part yet but, my intuition struggles to trust the process for some reason. I guess new things take time to adjust to.
@edwardfletcher7790 Жыл бұрын
@@cgprecision Thank you for your expertise 👍 There's been a great many people who've broken the plier head on their Skeletool or Phillips driver on their SOG that agree with you !! FINALLY I know the name of the process that created them, thank you 👍

Actually Victorinox also make 130 mm models, based on old Wenger designs. Sadly, they don’t make the slide lock any more 😢

It is not a compass. Just a picture of one! A real compass has a needle that always ponints to the north. And the 111mm is not the largest series of multitools they build. Check out the 130mm Rangergrip and Rangerwood series. Thanks for showing

The 111mm are the best. I’ve the Rescue Tool, Sentinel OHO, Trailmaster (Trekker), Alpineer, Hunter XT and Work Champ. The locking blades make them safer to use. I’d say the Skipper Pro is on my list! Great video. I thought there was a SAK with a small rotating compass on the scales?
@myimorata76782 жыл бұрын
I have at least one of each of these and the only thing that puzzles me are the ones that have, both, cammo scales and the gleaming shiny hardware you can see a mile away. My conclusion: it's a way to sell the piece, without any tactical consideration. And that's fine. If that's what the buyer wants, to each his or her own.

It annoys me Victorinox don't do plus scales for the 111mm or scale tools for the Walnut option😕 It's strange to me, seeing the Trekker with saw and philips instead of the corkscrew. Is it a military specification ? I've got a Picknicker (Slide lock Adventurer with corkscrew.) Victorinox are correct with the serration location for Bushcraft. The keyring conflicts with the marlin spike location on the Pro. But I understand why they wouldn't make a unique keyring layer for a single model. I've got an old slide lock Hercules, it's a fantastic SAK for home DIY and Electronics hobbyists. The long phillips for recessed screws is pretty much unique in the SAK/Multitool universe.

It is said a multitool is a collection of mediocre tools but the trekker/soldier/outrider are the exception. All tools are exceptional blade centric tools. Pliers the same goes for the Gerber MP600 bladeless or Havalon Evolve. If you want a one tool stop the Leatherman Sidekick is best.

@@theedcden5515 The best 111mm SAK is the Outrider if you are only carrying or buying one tool (scissors and a LONG Philips for electronics or making awl holes bigger and deeper). The biggest are the 130mm ones and they are the best one stop outdoors only tools best at fire making out there now that I have one and put it through 2 winters. All the Victorinox Delémont RangerGrip 55, 79, 155, 179 models have a better handle, bigger blade, and a superior saw more comparable to an actual specialized folding saw without the extra bulk and expense. For one tool outdoors carry be it hiking, camping, shelter making, or fire building it is exceptional and the Ranger wood model seems to pass the test for those touchy about knives. So far it gets treated more like a classy kitchen piece than a big knife and there has been none of that "multitool bro/lesbian" eyeroll or avoidance.

Does it happens to you too? Everytime i am looking at Victorinox knives, i tell myself "Shame, this - insert tool name - is missing. This - insert the tool name - is certainly useless to me, i would rather have - insert the tool name - instead." With such broad selection of tools Victorinox may make great deal, if they would offer custom set of tools. There would be limits, how much and which tools can specific knife variant have, but the rest would be at the decision of the customer.
