A little after 4 am Monday Caney Creek Fire was dispatched to a reported head-on crash with fire on FM 1314 at the Crystal Creek bridge. Units arrived to find an 18-wheeler loaded with food products fully involved in fire. In addition a trash compactor truck was against the bridge rail with the container over the side in the creek. The driver of that truck was entrapped and deceased. The food service truck driver was ejected from the truck. He was transported to HCA Conroe in critical condition. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within a short period of time. DPS responded to the scene along with TXDOT. WIth over 400 gallons of diesel and oil on the ground cleanup is quite extensive especially since some found its way into Crystal Creek which feeds the San Jacinto River and to Lake Houston. The 18-wheeler was loaded with Owens Sausage and Fruity Pebbles waffles and was headed tot he Walmart Distribution Center in New Caney. FM 1314 was closed between Exxon Road and Bert Brown until at 1pm. The truck was owned by Bob Evans Foods. THat truck was totally destroyed and the trailer split in two. The trash container truck had just left the Walmart Distribution Center in New Caney and was heading to the dump when, on the bridge the 18 wheeler came into his lane ripping the side of the trash truck off and throwing the trash container into Crystal Creek below. With the container leaking fluid and the diesel fuel a sheen was seen on Crystal Creek. Milstead Environmental worked to dam up the creek and set booms to stop the oil and lubricants from going downstream. In addition the worked to remove the some 400 gallons of diesel from the roadway. Milstead and Miller Heavy Duty Wreckers worked to remove the damaged trucks. Eickenhorst Funeral Directors transported the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office Vehicular Crimes Unit is assisting in the investigation.

Worked for the CHP for 28 years. There's ONE accident you can never get involved in... and thats a head on. If you see it coming and have any time to take evasive action, swerving off the road and/or hitting a tree is much better than two vehicles colliding from opposite directions.
@Deploracle
@Deploracle 9 ай бұрын
If paying complete attention to the road, with proper reaction time, an 18-wheeler can almost be completely stopped by the time the opposing vehicle arrives on scene. Experience tells me a phone was involved.

@@michaeloverholt2081 Well I have a few times, but mostly tour buses for a decade or so. If someone suddenly swerves into your lane, nothing can be done. However this one seems to be like all the others lately, where one vehicle slowly crosses the center line and it just isn't noticed soon enough by the other driver, which is correctable. As you must know well, avoiding accidents in heavy vehicles requires anticipating what may happen before it does. If all a driver can do is react once a bad situation materializes in front of him .. I suggest a different career to them.

I hope the man in fact survived. I drove 18-wheelers back in the late 1980s, all over the Deep South, and I never used drugs or alcohol even for short single-hour trips. Now you know why. Please folks, we must give full recognition to our veterans, LEOs, physicians and nurses, firefighters, EMTs/paramedics, rescue and recovery volunteers, and the other groups God gave us to live in a civilized world. But never forget the roles of our truck drivers. When you go to Walmart, supplies come by trucking and railroad. Gas stations? Fuel tankers. The list goes on. 👨🏻‍🦳🇺🇸✌🏻🇺🇸

If you witness it happening to someone else the noise actually disappears and everything happens in slow motion. As a witness I actually anticipated the occurrence and tried to warn the drivers of both vehicles. One driver, the victim, was coming off night shift, consequently sluggish reflexes. The perpetrator, unfortunately was triggered into a memory and was basically absent from control of herself and her vehicle.

So heartbreaking---& just after a holiday. Thinking of the families & concentric circles of everyone who knew someone who knew someone. It's the dangerous aspects of working at 4 a.m. in huge vehicles & roadways that many people have no idea--what hazardous & frightening jobs every day people work---least of all the CEOs & politicians. And, the impact on 1st responders who deal with assessing, treating, aftermath & memory. It's all TOO much. Condolences seem so small for such a burden to everyone. Gentle thoughts to all.

As a *former* OTR Driver, I can say that Walmart (like many other companies) will not accept late loads. If you are late, you may sit for a couple of days waiting for a new delivery appointment time. That means Drivers may be pushed to their limits to avoid sitting. There are good reasons for not wanting to sit. You're not making money and your company is going to penalize you for being late. It just sucks all the way around. Sometimes delivering late is beyond the Driver's control.

All the speculation as to the cause, some of it not respectful toward the deceased, it could have been a heart attack or stroke, We had one of those near us where the driver crossed over both lanes of divided highway, railroad tracks and hit the grade for the spur rail. Which is what stopped his semi. DOA from something other than trauma, haven't heard officially yet from the examiner, but DPS thinks it was a heart attack.

I worked for a fuel hauling company and during my time there we lost TWO Tractor trailers ( fully loaded) One Driver had a heart attack and was gone before the unit went over a bridge down onto the road and traffic below ( killed two people and a PET 🐶🐕 of the other over the road driver) . The next one the driver hit a patch of BLACK ICE and it flipped over and slid down the road and off the road into gully, but when it came to a stop the door had popped open and he was hanging down by his seat belt, a police officer dragged him out of the FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥, he was still alive but the accident beat his body up really bad, he tried to do it again but he couldn't handle the damage to his body!!!

I can't believe that one of them lived. trailers have no bulkhead apparently, because nothing even slows down the cargo. he was crushed by the load he was hauling.

Trash compactor. Full size trash compactor. It’s off the yellow truck. It was a roll back. Used for the big sims sided trash bens from work sites or stirs that use the trash compactors.

@@tamaragonzalez2227 Sorry. No it doesn’t. What I wanted to know which vehicle was on the wrong side of the road. Obviously it was head on but one must have been in the wrong lane. Unless of course both were in the middle.
