At midnight EMC Fire was dispatched to a major accident on I-69 Southbound just north of FM 1485 in New Caney. Units arrived on the scene to find a disabled 18-wheeler that experienced a transmission failure parked in the moving lane of freeway traffic in an unlit area of the freeway. He was loaded with cartons of DEF Fluid for diesel engines. A second 18-wheeler was loaded with cardboard did not see the disabled truck and slammed into the rear of it without even applying brakes. The cab of the truck went inside the trailer load of DEF. Firefighters spent 20-minutes cutting the driver out. He was then transported to Kingwood Hospital in critical condition. As wreckers tried to separate the two trucks the one that slammed into the trailer burst into flames. It was quickly extinguished by the wrecker driver and DPS. EEMC fire responded back to the scene to complete the task.
SOUTHBOUND 59 REMAINS CLOSED AT ROMAN FOREST AND WILL BE FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER HOUR AS HAZMAT TEAMS CLER FLUIDS AND THE TRUCKS ARE REMOVED FROM THE FREEWAY.
