Discograffiti host Dave Gebroe conducted a 13-hour interview with the two founders of legendary 1960s soft pop act The Association, Terry Kirkman and Jules Alexander, in which they rated the entirety of their own discography.
It’s impossible to adequately put into words how surreal this series is. Trust me, it’s unquestionably a ride worth taking no matter how you feel about the genre.
Welcome aboard the most lunatic series in Discograffiti history.
In Part 4, the final chapter (!), we tackle:
* What it felt like to tumble so quickly from the charts;
* How many ⭐️’s outta five Terry & Jules give Stop Your Motor (1971), Waterbeds In Trinidad (1972), and the slew of generic singles released through the 1970s & ‘80s;
* And the not-so-happy-sounding Happy Together Tour during which Terry insists their manager stole millions of dollars from his acts and invited Terry to take part!

It was amazing to listen to Terry and Jules talk for so many hours about their music. They have very different personalities but are close friends and it made the experience very rewarding. I just wish the host was not so in love with the sound of his own voice. And his opinions about their music could not be more different than mine. Requiem for the Masses is weird? Stonehenge their worst album? Yikes. The First Sound is Muzak? Yet he seems to love the songs that I thought were schlock, like Dreamer and various Larry Ramos songs. Still, he obviously did a lot of work to prepare and to have an interview of this type in 2023 is an incredible accomplishment. So, Dave, good job. And so sorry that Terry, a fascinating guy, is no longer with us.

I like the self titled a lot....but it had to grow on me for a while. Both sides have some duds but both start out excellent and both finish really strong, especially side 2. Broccoli is the only track I'll skip on side 2 and I don't always skip it. Under Branches is such a vibe and so moody. Dubuque Blues rules! In fact I love every Jules track (as is the case on most every album). Stop Your Motor is my least favorite but totally agree with Dave that Its Gotta Be Real and Traveler's Guide are great and saves it from being only a fair album. It took me forever to find Waterbeds but was well worth my wait! Jules is killing it here. His tunes alone are well worth seeking it out. I've been waiting for a true follow up to this for many years. It makes me very happy to know that Jules and Terry and others are working on an album in 2023. Can't wait! Superb interview series. Thanks to all involved and for Terry and Jules for taking the time.

I REALLY enjoyed listening to Jules. His laugh was infectious and constant. But I must agree with Michael Willett's comments that Dvae interposed himself too much into the conversation. As Terry remarks at the end of this episode, a good documentarian must distance himself a bit from the suject. I can certainly understand wanting to talk with Terry and Jukes, but a lot of Dave's comments should have dited out of the presentation. And asking artists to grade their own work made me a bit uncomfortable. I would have enjoyed the presentation more if Jules and Terry (especially) were not pressured into an answer. Taste is basically personal, so anyone and everyone is welcome to throw opinions out with the garage. I quite like the Stonehenge album. It's not a great record, but I like it when I play it. I saw the Association twice in '67 and once in '68, and the singing was MUCH better than on the Live album. Maybe it was the altitude, but getting to hear 'One Too Many Mornings' and 'Babe, I'mm Gonna Leave You' for the first time could not erase my disappointment. (Seeing them live, I liked their presentation, particularly Terry taking over on drums for Ted's songs. But the worst album for me is a duel between "Stop Your Motor" (though I loved the title) and "Waterbeds in Trinidad." I love Sopwith Camel's "The Miraculous Hump Returns From the Moon," but the lyrical content ('Sleazy Street,' 'Orange Peel,' 'Oriental Fantasy.' 'Monkeys on the Moon, ...) and instrumentation ( various wind instruments and not much guitar) sound nothing, zip, zero like the Association to me. But I did stick with, and enjoy, all four episodes. Thanks
