Discograffiti host Dave Gebroe conducted a 13-hour interview with the two founders of legendary 1960s soft pop act The Association, Terry Kirkman and Jules Alexander, in which they rated the entirety of their own discography.
It’s impossible to adequately put into words how surreal this series is. Trust me, it’s unquestionably a ride worth taking no matter how the hell you feel about the genre.
Welcome aboard the most lunatic series in Discograffiti history.
In Part 1, Terry & Jules reveal:
* How they went about forming one of the most successful bands of all time;
* The manifold difficulties of getting a record deal when you’d just invented a whole new genre of music;
* And exactly how many acid trips were indeed taken, whether dosed or intentional.
NEXT WEEK: THE ASSOCIATION PART 2!

A couple of things: I last saw the band at Westbury when I was 13. It was also the first time I was in a limo, which my Uncle Pat provided. It was the only time I met the band. And Jules Gary) was gone. My name is pronounced ' Koh-lek-y -oh.'. The pronunciation you have is a misunderstanding that my grandfather adopted from American imagination officials when he immigrated. I am fortunate to have interviewed Pat at length prior to his passing and own many first and test pressing. I always favored the creativity of the albums over those which received air play.. I also learn to play Terry's recorder parts I still play them and have learned the backing vocals and harmonies in my old age, which are a lot of fun .

Wow! These shows are amazing. Jules is a hero of mine. Terry as well. I emailed them both long ago and they were very kind and answered many questions. I took a crazy deep dive into this band when I was in high school in the early 90s when most of their stuff wasn't available on cd. I found all the albums on vinyl thankfully. The self titled one is one of my faves. Dubuque Blues, Under Branches, Goodbye Forever....amazing stuff. My band still plays Midnight Wind and Dubuque Blues live. Can't wait to hear all of this! Thank you.

Terry talked about this interview when I saw him last. He was fascinated with rating his work with the Association. It's great to hear Terry's voice again!

Thanks for doing this interview as the Association was the first "big name band" concert that I ever went to when I saw them in November 1966 with the Loving Spoonful in Chicago at the Arie Crown theater at the Original Mc Cormick place.

In terms of my wider musical development there are no more important bands to me than The Beach Boys, Big Star....and The Association.
