114th Chicago to Mackinac Race - 7/21/2023

This is the 114th Chicago to Mackinac Race hosted by the Wintrust Bank. It starts in Chicago, Illinois and ends in Mackinac Island. The race takes place in Lake Michigan and all boats follow one course. Lake Michigan is known for rough seas and bad storms, but in our case we had a light air, up wind race.
I crewed on the sailboat Voyager, a S2 9.1 owned by Roy Lamphier. It was a really great learning experience, and it was something that we practiced for throughout the months of May and June.

Cool video and congrats. FYI in 2021 PH Mac Wind Toy IV got dinged with a 1 hour penalty for ORC rule 209.4 for flying a bow tacked asymmetrical kite wing and wing. Be careful when you have “chill” boats in your class 😂

Having sailed 6 Macs in the cruising class and finishing on the podium 4 times, I can safely say that no one is making upwind head sail changes.

Having finished second in cruising class, I can safely say that we do.

I hear you, we're a small boat (less than 30'). We tend to eat it when it really blows. The issue in this snippet was that there was a front coming and we wanted to get rid of the #3 in case things got heavy and thought it best to do it while the kite was up. The week before in the Bayview Mac, we got stuck with the #1 up in a blow and spent the night pounding along with it simply furled - but it wasn't very effective. What's not seen in this sequence is where the forestay jib track separates and we have to get it back together. This was damage from the prior week that we were trying mitigate. In retrospect, we were playing it really conservative, trying not to get caught out. But in the end, the front was quick and not terrible, so we probably were guilty of being overly cautious. Good practice for the young bucks nonetheless.

Having had 12 podium finishes, ~5 of which were in cruising, I can safely say that the boats at the top of the class do headsail changes upwind (bare nosed with furler). I can also say that we have practiced that sail change, it should only take about 90 seconds.

It might be camera distortion, but your genoa cars looked to far aft on the start.

They are pretty far aft, but that's normal for that type of boat from my understanding.
