Thankyou Sir for a very informative film. I have a 99 r1150gs & the abs servo has also failed. Watching you do the job has given me confidence in having a go myself . Thankyou.

Go for it Peter. It worried me sick when I realised that mine had failed, but the cost of getting a specialist to sort it is enormous and I found it not hard at all. Get your mind in gear, Buy the parts and take your time. It is such a enjoyable job to do😆

Hi Norm. I’m in NZ, I am a Yorkshire Pom though. My ABS just failed on my 2004 1200. I panicked at the potential repair/renew costs. I’m not a mechanical person like yourself so took it to a local pommie bike mechanic. He read it all up, spoke to motorworx but then decided to make all the bits himself. He did it for me for about 500bucks. (About 250quid). The brakes are perfect now. Love your channel. Hope you have a great new year mate. Thanks

Hi Kevin, that is a great story and well done your mechanic. As I said on the video my son’s 2005 1200GS cost £500 to remove the ABS at Grahams garage in Bradford about four years ago😱. You will love it now😍

The switch connectors look the same as the as the ones on my non-servo, ABS-II equipped bike (2002 model year in the US). My guess is they have to supply the 'older' style switches to get the desired behavior. Fantastic video series.

Well done with the removal of the ABS. One thing I do when removing electric cables or wire cables is tie a piece of string to the end. When I pull the cables through the string lines the route. Remove old cable, attach new cable to string and pull back through. Happy New Year to you and family.

Hi Martyn, yes I was because they could not be more helpful. I wonder whether they even realise that you need to re-use the original sockets and solder them back on. I could so easily cut the out sockets off flush😱. I looked up my wiring diagram in Haynes manual yesterday and even that has Grey and Black wire to the stop light, not grey and white which it actually is🤔. Presume BMW changed it?

@@normski3091 If I can well it can't be that hard, but I think it would take a while before it becomes precise/pretty most the stuff I do gets ground down and covered up . But another toy to play with and doesn't take too long for it to be good enough strength wise.

@@normski3091 Yes, the ABS is the bane of many owners. I have three different models and have the same issues in varying degrees. Motorworks was indeed most helpful to you in the surgical ward, and your own illustrative drawing the best explained yet. Perhaps one day you will have the notion to visit Portugal. It would be great to meet you! For now, greetings from the Isle of Man. Grace, Peace and Mercy on your House.

When buying an 1150, never buy the later one with the newer ABS. There is only two kinds of units, those that have failed and those that are about to fail. I'm very glad I got the older single spark version with the old ABS. The problem with removing the ABS from the bike in Germany would be, the bike came with it, so there is no way the TUV (MOT) will allow it.

Germany is just so strict. I make RAM mounts for RT’s and have sent them all around the world from New Zealand to Alaska. No one has ever had to pay customs, VAT, duty etc etc. until 3 weeks ago I sent one £28 bolt to Germany and the customer had to pay around 14 euros to receive the envelope 😱

Hi Norman, great video and step by step instruction. However I have a question. Did you remove the front and rear ABS sensor and pulse ring from the wheel as theoretically they are not needed?
@normski3091
@normski3091 Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, glad you liked it. Good question. No I left them in place, even though they serve no purpose at all. The brakes do work really well after removal, I was worried whether it would be like a car with no servo brakes, but not a problem at all🤗

Hi Paul, that is another good question. I cannot build another bike, I have done 3 since retiring and each costs between £2000-£5000 more than they can be sold for 🤷🏼‍♂️😱. I am planning to do a series of rides around the Peak District to see the response but really not sure 🤔

Very interesting. I thought that, with your engineering passion, you would have gone into the repair of ABS unit! I do not really understand the purpose of the change of microswitches, if you re-install them on original connections. Maybe some unnecessary difficult work...Merry Christmas to you.
@normski3091
@normski3091 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Francois, apparently the circuit for the brake light switches that go through the ABS is totally opposite what will work without ABS. I am sure electricians will understand but whatever happens it has to be changed. It appears that the easiest solution by far is new cables 🤷🏼‍♂️. When my son’s 1200GS ABS failed about 4 years ago we contacted probably the best company in the UK for sorting BMW bike ABS called Graham’s Garage in Bradford. They totally advised against even themselves trying to repair but to just remove. It cost £500 but actually adds value to the bike in the UK as everyone knows it needs doing. Worth going onto Graham’s site as they explain all about the ABS.
