Wouldn't it be more efficient to have multiple cars in the tunnel at once? Maybe you could connect them together, and make them big enough to handle like 50 people per car. Then, for safety, put these connected platoons of cars onto rails, and have convenient stopping points where passengers can embark and disembark.

Sounds great, but maybe there should also be another system, for people who don't like being around others, maybe, just one of these carriages, and 1 person in it, maybe 2, and they could drive on the surface, but maybe they could make a tunnel for some of them, so they will be able to get to their destination faster, and they can stay away from others... Notice the speed around the curve, 40 mph. So, 100 mph...if the entirety of the trip is straight. Minus the time to drop into the tunnel. What happens in the event of a car malfunction or accident or medical emergency? Where are the emergency access points? What is the ventilation like if you're trapped in there for an extended time period? What if there's a fire? Also assuming only one car (3 passengers, max) allowed between entry point and exit at a time? So if 10 carloads of people want to make the trip and you're 10th in line, your time is 10x longer than this one?
@kevinbailey88273 жыл бұрын
These tunnels will need to be as straight as highways on which people drive 100mph. Curves will have lower speed limits. Long tunnels will need emergency access points. Current tunnels (like the LVC) have ventilation. It will kick in if there's a fire, and they can control which direction it blows. It's listed on their website as a standard safety feature. There's absolutely no reason to think only one car will be in the tunnel at a time. I don't think the elevators for cars will be a prominent part of the system anytime soon.

This will never be a widely adopted thing. Those tunnels are literal death traps. If something bad happens, there's no emergency exits. You can't reverse and drive backwards. You can't walk back easily because there's little to no space between the cars and the walls, and there will be a lot of cars stuck behind you. If a fire breaks out, you'll quickly suffocate on the fumes since the tunnel is so small, the fumes will travel very quickly in both directions.

Us engineers have a mental issue. We work in herds like wolves. We surrender our minds to the alpha engineer. Or the apparent alpha engineer that Elon is. One without a formal degree but every bit an engineer in spirit and knowledge. So most engineers a notch below his IQ would surrender to his mind and only see what he sees and only think how he thinks. He always makes a lot of noise about his products and then serves them hot in the old recipe. This stupid tunnel is eventually a regular tunnel and for it to become mass transit friendly they would need the entry and exit to be like regular tunnels. You can't move trolleys 50 times a minute in congested cities. So it basically turns out he took us all on a fancy ride to bring us back to the solution that the city needs more underground tunnels or flyovers to reach places in time. Some people still want to see it as some ground breaking discovery. What a joke.

Only vitreous, properly installed tile (like on japanese temples) and hidden fastener non-rusting (aluminum, stainless, titanium, (copper sucks)etc) standing seam roofing will MAGA. everything else incurs too much ongoing costs, including a tesla roof, whether or not you care about solar, because the system relies on an intact underlayment to shed wind driven rain, and underlayments need replacements every 30 to 50 years.

@Daniel Roig there's a lot of potential behind this innovation. the dirt removed & construction required per vehicle lane is significantly less than larger diameter tunnels. Innovation in tunneling has been largely stagnant for decades. They're aiming to make the machines way faster and far more automated. They did the same thing in the rocket industry, basically, and it worked. 'might as well throw a few million, or a few hundred million, at this enterprise and see how it works out. If they DO get the costs down and the tunneling speeds higher, then they can experiment with marketing the tunnels to municipalities. People would probably pay 20 bucks a pop to travel 50 miles in a tunnel and GTFO of LA. They could live in areas with affordable housing and get to work faster than if they spent a million on a crappy house in LA. 'might be saving 2k/month on a mortgage payment and not live in a polluted, noisy cesspool full of those crime-ridden, HOA living, apartment dwelling, hysterical, blindly oppressive libtards, while still raking in 6 figures at their urban LA jobs.

Wait... that guy is actually steering?? I thought it was all autopilot in the tunnel? That is absolutely insane driving that fast in there... just touch one of those walls and you will probably end up on your roof, going over 100 in a tiny little tunnel... This thing is just a complete nightmare.

What happens if there is an accident though. (Although it should be rare) the tunnels look too tight to get out of say a burning or crushed vehicle, then what? There's no room either side of the car to walk to an escape. They look too tight to even open normal car doors. How will ambulances, firefighters and police get to a vehicle? There's no room to move around the cars. It'll be interesting to see how/if they deal with these safety concerns

The tunnel is a controlled situation so while nothing is 100% safe it will be much safer than normal road driving. The greater problem will be clearing a car that has a breakdown from in the tunnel section. I wonder what they plan to do for that? Maybe a small automated vehicle able to tow a vehicle out if it's stuck.
