Yes! My method is similar to his for little wooden puzzles they are so fun, but the fact that he laid out the possible moves, and sort of mentally crossed them off, and was left with one move and it was the right one, that was really eye opening :)

well, the good vs bad ones. The good ones allow you to most if not all moves from any position, so you know the rules without needing someone or something to tell you otherwise (I have played with metal puzzles which ask you to NOT force the pieces as well as ones which tell you to force them so I just never do them (I have not broken any... 100%).

That's how good mechanics and technicians do it. I'm in the service and repair business for many retail businesses, and run into all sorts of equipment. Breaking down and isolating components is how I solve issues, even on something that I've never worked on before.

If you want to stop lpl you need a door with a couple locks as a distraction, and a piece of duct tape to keep your valuables. He'll get distracted/excited for breaking the locks, and will forget about the valuables.

One part of it that he didn't talk through was identifying clearly what the desired outcome should be. In this case, he realized almost instantly that if you can get all the pieces on the string on one side of the hole, the puzzle is solved, so all his permutations are based around that. He doesn't mess around with spinning the bottle, or manipulating the rope. Of course a really devious puzzle would be to include a similar but impossible to solve topographical puzzle, and have the actual solution be, e.g., a secret drawer in the base. So it's important that if you've defined the problem space and none of the solutions are working, to go back to the start and re-evaluate your assumptions.

I have this same puzzle. I use it to protect an expensive whisky from too casual consumption! It always has taken ages for me to solve. Sometimes I search for the solution. My jaw dropped when I saw how quickly you solved this. I instantly grabbed for my bottle and now, using your way of thinking, for the first time, I can't un-know this solution. Still awe struck.

There are keyways in his collection which he wasn't able to open, check out "[480] The Top Ten Nastiest Keyways (In My Collection)". But it was done in 2017 so he might have been able to open them by now but he said that some of those were impossible to lockpick so I don't know.
