117ci Stage 2 Lowrider S / New Screamin Eagle 2-1 / ZIPPERS Cam

The new 117ci Lowrider S gets the all new Screamin' Eagle 2 into 1 Exhaust & a STG 2 cam from Zippers. Once installed, it's onto the dyno to exactly how the new 2-1 exhaust from SE performs.
This Cam from Zippers looks good on paper so what better way to find out just how it goes in the real world.
Follow along as I strip the bike down from stock & build it up to the stage 2 configuration.
You will see me chop out the stock pushrods with bolt cutters. The reason for this is because the bike is brand new & there is no need to go in & check out any of the engine top end for wear & tear or any possible replacement parts including top end engine breathers.
This process proves to be a cost saving for the customer & in turn, allows for more precise adjustment of the hydraulic lifter preload by using the adjustable pushrods.
Some scenes & shots have been edited out to keep the video from becoming slow or boring. Some clips that are not shown are the installation of the upgraded full complement cam bearing, warm up & run in of the cam & the cruise speed tuning to keep the bike running as economically as possible.

I have this bike and I love it. You are exactly right on the quiet exhaust!! I had a sportster 1200 with slip-ons and it grumbled like a beast but the FXLRS is a kitty-cat, until you get on that throttle!

Nice! Results (108.5whp & 120.7wFtTq) after you tuned, dialed it in are pretty darn good. Curves look very nice. @@billgonzales8978 that exhaust they used is the problem. It's way too restrictive because it is an emissions compliant exhaust. They are also very expensive, which is dumb. Pay $200-300 more for a bigger, heavier, ugly 2-1 that makes less power than every other 2-1 in the aftermarket, all for "emissions and noise regulation", or some dealerships will say to keep your warranty, but the truth is the exhaust would only void the warranty if the exhaust was the direct cause of the warranty issue, so basically it will never happen lol

The tuner warned me before using him that his dyno is stingy but its not far off from what zippers shows on their dyno charts

I have this cam in my 114 stage 4 street glide and it definitely goes. 120ft lb right off idle and tops at 131 ft lb and 126 hp. I can only imagine this in a bike that’s 200lbs lighter.

The SE exhaust is for a stage 4 128/131 ie plenty of flow. In America that exhaust has a catalyst for emissions & is made to meet sound level requirements. I’ve read you remove / modify the Db reducer and sound really comes around. I have the S&S Superstreet 2-1 it made 116HP on my 114ci Sport Glide. 11-1 compression SE-498 cam. I went with a larger Db reducer and am very pleased with the sound. Louder at idle and under load but not stupid loud. Also more base boom and no raspy “back talk”. Only it doesn’t have the larger head pipes like that Harley pipe does to make room for 128+ci 150+HP builds. Wonder what this would have dynoed and sounded like with Star Racing 30/30 cam.

It may have plenty of flow compared to the stock exhaust, but it doesn't compare to any of the 2-1 pipes that other companies offer. This package with a 2-1 from V&H, Trask, fab28, TBR, Thunderheader, Supertrapp, and like you mentioned, even the S&S Superstreet flows much better than the Screamin Eagle, and that exhaust is also emissions and sound compliant. This bike made 8 less hp, with a similar setup. That bike could easily make 120+hp with the other 2-1 pipes offered. Now, with all that said I bet 116hp on the Sport Glide is an absolute blast to ride!

@@jonnymac8925 So I like my Superstreet for example and it’s well proven to be a pretty competitive exhaust depending on displacement say 107,114,117 and Horsepower say 100 to 130. My point being with the larger head pipes and MoCo’s designed use for the pipe (stage 4 131) It should be competitive especially for being epa compliant on say a 130 to 150HP 131. Some of the better for smaller displacement pipes that you mentioned that have the smaller head pipes may not fair any better on a 150 HP 131. I assume time & testing will tell.

@@vernlochtefeld1626 the Superstreet is 100x better than the Screamin Eagle. That being said guys aren't making 150+hp out of the Screamin Eagle 2-1. The cat is restrictive, that's why it's EPA compliant. Screamin Eagle parts always make less power than their non EPA compliant parts offered in the aftermarket. I Would sooner go with a Burns, DND, or even Kromeworks for big CI bikes before I would ever put the SE 2-1 on a 124-131. The price is ridiculous for what it offers too. The best pipes for 2-1 seems to be Burns Stainless, they make some serious big header exhausts. A guy I know just dynod 164hp/164tq just this past week with a Burns setup. Trask, Fab28, Stealth, Sewicki, Burns, they are all hand made and the headers can all be specially ordered to whatever size, and even the other 2-1 options would be better than the SE offering. The SE pipe would literally be the last option. The 164/164 combo was achieved with Kromeworks head pipes which are a 3 stage stepped header.

@@jonnymac8925I appreciate your answers you certainly know your exhausts. No I would never expect the new SE stage 4 exhaust to keep up with custom built larger & step primary exhausts. But I didn’t know their catalyst had been proven to be more restrictive than say the store bought Streetmaster that is made for smaller displacement motors with stock primary sizes. Those are tests I would be interested in seeing. Naturally SE parts are expensive but timed or a connection you can get them at a 20 percent discount which normally makes them reasonably price competitive. You would pay even more for custom built but you would get more as well.

In general, most short shot style 2-2 systems keep the low rpm torque healthy but miss out up the top and sacrifice overall HP.

Can you please do the SE 122 stage 3 kit ? I have 2021 LRS and put the kit it over the winter.. HD tuner , 447 cam,the only change to the bike was my addition of the Trask Ckm8 vented transmission/oil tank cover. S&S 55mm Manifold, S&S Grand Nationals Slip ons . I have not ridden it yet as it is still to snowy and cold here in Minnesota. Thanks !! Love the channel

Did you install the map tune before firing it up or did you run it right after the install? I'll be taking it to Harley to have them tune and dyno, just trying to figure out if I can ride it there (about 5 miles) or at least fire it up to load it on a trailer. Or should I leave the engine off until the tune is installed?

You can fire it up with the factory tune in it. If you need to ride a little bit just to get to the dealer/tuner that is fine too. It may just run a little shitty but it won't hurt anything as long as you don't go do any full throttle stuff

Another question, does HD void warranty on newer bikes if you use aftermarket cams/exhaust and tuners? Or is that only in the US? What tuner are you using to adjust the afr's /timing in the individual cylinders. I have seen other tests on M8 engine/oil temps ,it seems oddly enough the front cylinder is hotter than the rear. Is the front cylinder mapped to a lean AFR from the factory. thanks! I think it would be great if your shop and Geelong HD did a collab build !!!

I think a Wood 22xe cam and Rinehart slip-ons, or S&S Grand Nation racing slip ons would have yielded better results and a Fuel Moto tune. For $2000 that wasn't much gain or sound. The S&S G.N. mufflers really flow which means plentiful of sound, and,Bob Wood cams out perform the others every time. Fuel Moto has a tune for everything and combination.I have the same bike, but added the Harley quarter fairing and and above items. It'll come off the line so hard you can't get your feet on the pegs, and pull too almost 135mph.👍

Probably not a bad choice if you want to have that type of LOOK with the bike & keeping the Tq down low

The 2021 low rider s had a 12.5” shock. I think the 2022 low rider s has the 13” shock (the same one that’s on Fat Bob and Heritage models) On my 2021 low rider s, I have the Nitron adjustable length shock that a lot of Harley riders are switching to so they can set the ride height where they want from 12.5”-13.5” by changing and/or screwing the eyelet in or out When my nitron is set at 13+3/8” the entire rear guard is higher than the tyre height and you can see daylight between the two. With the 2022 low rider s, the rear guard still covers the tyre

This cam is new to me so I'm unsure of how it will respond to another pipe choice and if it would effect the power & torque curves much. A CR Cam would definitely show a little more torque and keeping it up further throughout the rev range. Hopefully I'll get to do a little experimenting with this bike over the next month or 2

At 2:36 are you CUTTING the pushrods apart??? Please tell me this is not the normal procedure for doing head work…. To have to replace the push rods each time you want to do work on it

Genuine H-D service states to use bolt cutters to remove the OEM pushrods when installing stage 2 cam kits & when using SE adjustable pushrods. If you wish to use the OEM or even the SE perfect pushrods that's fine, you will be paying for the extra labour & gaskets to do it. The SE adjustable pushrods are designed to be installed without removing the top end. That's why the manual says cut the factory ones out.

Hi Tommy, I took this bike for a run last weekend. it's definitely a blast to ride. The note on the exhaust isn't quite where i'd like it to be. How do you think a 2 into 1 TBR exhaust would go on it ? Loved the cornering capabilities of it. I personally found the take off & into second gear not as quick as i would have expected but it pulled like a tractor in the higher gears. What cam would you personally upgrade to if it was yours ? Thanks for coming in and riding it mate. I haven't had much luck with TBR 2-1 pipes on the M8 engines. They seem to be too small them I feel. They work better on the Twincams in my opinion. I would like to put a Bassani RR3 on it or a D&D Lowcat. As for the Cam....if it were mine and I was only going to keep it a stage 2 bike I would go for the Cyclerama CR483 or the S&S 475

It's definitely a good pipe as far as quality is concerned. It is designed for the bigger bore applications so in my opinion, I think it will work a dream with the SE 131 kit. This pipe doesn't seem to have the initial dip in the torque curve that's found in most other 2-1 pipes.

What is your opinion on replacing the cam plate/oil pump etc when doing a stage 2 is it only required or recommended on particular models or when chasing certain performance. For the average rider who intends on doing a stage 2 and then leaving it there is it really necessary or just a money sink. Also you dont mention the use of any aftermarket tuners used to put this bike on the dyno, is that a contractual type thing or just overlooked.

The factory cam plate and the 8 lobe gerotor oil pump (standard on late 2019 models and up) is absolutely fine to use even upto stage 3 and 4 builds. I do suggest going to the Fueling OE+ Camplate on high lift cams (over 500thou) just to help add a bit of rigidity to the cam chest. The Screamin Eagle pro street tuner has very limited adjustability and is not suited for anything above a stage 1 application in my opinion. There is not enough adjustment to gain the full benefits of the upgrades past stage 1. Less face it, you're upgrading from stage 1 to a stage 2, 3 or even 4 so why hinder the performance with a restriction on the tuning. Aftermarket tuning devices like the Maximus or Direct Link USB from Technoresearch offer full adjustability to dial in the tune correctly.

Yes the Screamin Eagle 55mm intake manifold will fit the 2022 bikes. It fits all Milwaukee8 engine in fact. I don't believe it is worth doing it to a stock bike. If you go up to a stage 2 or higher then I recommend using it to help increase overall HP. It won't really effect TQ at all. The only tuning device I reccomend for any Milwaukee8 powered Harley is the Direct Link Key or Maximus module from Technoresearch. Both do the same thing, the Maximus module is better suited to guys who want to do their own tuning from home with a laptop, the direct link key is just so you can have it tuned at a shop.

A great all round set of Cams for the 96ci Twincam is a set of the Screamin Eagle 204 cams. They have a nice sound & elevate the torque down low through to the mid range with a slight increase in overall horsepower. The Screamin Eagle 211 cams require more compression by way of either shaving the heads & running a zero deck height with 30 thou MLS Head gaskets or forged 10.5:1 Pistons from Screamin Eagle. Remember though, if you add compression to your 96ci you will want to look at using either the manual decompression valves or the auto compression release valves. You'll need to consider that to help it crank over and start with the higher compression ratio. All 103ci engines come standard with the auto compression release valves (ACR).

The 117ci engine that comes in the ST models DOES NOT come with the torque cam installed from factory. It comes with CVO Camshaft found in all 117ci CVO models. I'm not sure who told you otherwise.

No a 2-1 exhaust is not mandatory. Any upgraded exhaust system from the factory will technically suffice.

Has HD corrected the oil pump, sumping, pinion run-out, crank case venting into throttle body issues with the new model M8's?

The oil pump was fixed in 2019 and subsequently fixed the sumping issue that some of the Touring models had. The 8 lobe gerotor on the scavenger side of the oil pump & along with main bearing seal on the backing of the pump had sorted that issue out completely. Harley's have always had a press fit crankshaft and it is known to cause some issues when doing wheelies, burnouts and drag racing as it can twist the crankshaft halves causing excessive run out. That's nothing new though. The venting of the crank case pressure back into the throttlebody is a completely normal practice for many engine manufacturers as per pollution requirements. I think you are referring the excessive amounts of oil found in some intakes as a result of the venting into the throttle body. Harley, do not offer any product like the aftermarket currently does such as the Fueling vented dipstick, replacement engine breathers or the Trask vented transmission top cover.

I've been very surprised to learn of all the past issues with earlier HD engines. For your information the Milwaukee 8 engine platform is the only one that has the venting and dumping issues. Anything produced before 2017 in the Twincam powered Harley's are bullet proof with the engine. You mentioned you we looking at Fatboy S or Lo which are part of the Twincam engine family so you have no concerns about dumping or venting etc. Just so you are fully aware and not mislead by the internet. I don't make a living selling Harley's so I'm not too fussed which brand you choose.

Just some engine assembly lube. It's a lot more sticky than oil. It sticks to the components and just helps add a security blanket when it comes to the first fire up where oil pressure & supply can be limited for a few seconds.

Hey Tommy, there seems to be a bit of varied conjecture on putting new bikes on the dyno prior to a full engine break-in. Was that Low Rider just out of the crate, or had it been run-in & given a 1st service before the upgrade & dyno run? Also, have HD sorted out the issue with spark plug leads being a pain to remove on the M8 engines? Are the current model M8 models (particularly the 117) fitted with the same compensator sprocket of M8 engines in the past?

Please read the video description for details about run in and break in etc. If you want or need more info about what I recommend as a 'break in' procedure. I have not heard or have I had trouble with removing spark plug leads on any M8 engine and I work on them daily. So I'm unaware of any if at all changes to them. As far as the compensator goes, I am under the impression that MY 20 and up no matter the size are fitted with the updated Compensator from Harely.

Correction factors that are part of the Dyno's calculation system & the fact I'm 2200ft above sea level. Higher the altitude, the less air pressure there is for the engine to breath. I've done a video in the past with a 128ci build I did. I tuned the bike here at my dealership, then took it down to sea level on the same dynojet 250i dyno for a comparison. It was over 25hp gain on that particular build.

I'm not gonna lie, doing all that work and then putting on that (in my opinion) ugly, very restrictive exhaust on did a huge disservice. I understand that AUS is hard on noise and emissions and that it's hard to do an after market exhaust when you work for Harley Davidson sometimes. The other thing is, it's a rather expensive exhaust for what it is, and an aftermarket 2-1 can be had for a couple hundred dollars less. I would like to see the difference between that pipe and a couple other after market 2-1 pipes. That being said its not my bike so at the end of the day it really doesn't matter haha

It's all I had available at the store at the time. The demo bikes I normally build are well over 145hp & 140ft/lbs. It's not my personal bike so it doesn't bother me either. Once the supply chains start to catch back up I'll be build another high output 128ci or 131ci bike with most like a D&D exhaust as they are by far my favorite pipe in not only performance, but sound & looks too
