Advice. Plant the fig tree now in a sheltered but sunny place. At the end of October, wrap the whole tree with straw and plastic. It will take 4-5 winters wrapping, then it will be ok.
@Theselfiechick
@Theselfiechick Күн бұрын
I was gonna suggest planting it in a oversized container as to have the option of moving it because figs can grow wide not only tall and I think it will overtake the greenhouse. The roots are prolific you’ll be surprised on how much you will need to cut back.😊

@emiliahuban4812 Күн бұрын
@@Theselfiechick That's true. I have figs on the mountain land, they grow as a bush at the beginning, but after 4-5 years, you choose one strong to create a tree, the rest chop in early spring or in October. His fig is already created as a tree, so he needs to choose a place outside, definitely not inside the greenhouse, planted in a deeper hole and water it regularly. It's important the first 4-5 winters to protect the tree from freezing. Where I live we have a cold below -15 C and I have two different fig trees surviving very well. Just made jam and compot (figs in syrup)

Also how about ventilation, those windows are fixed in place( I see no handles), and no thermal mass storage. So the heat of the day will quickly be gone in the night. Some Bricks or Barrels with water will do the trick cost effective. Passive Heating would have been nice, but I guess that is just much digging or splitting rocks in that location.

I've also been wondering about this. The greenhouse seems positioned for shade in the morning, and adding trees that might block even more sunlight in the afternoon. I thought at first he was going to plant shade lovers, but tomatoes are sunlovers. I wonder if there's an optical illusion and the trees are farther from the greenhouse than they look on camera? That's the only explanation I can think of.

A fig tree would take over that greenhouse, they grow fast and wide. Find a nice sunny spot outside for the fig tree and just wrap it in the winter. This is what we do in the cooler parts of the US and even Canada and they do just fine

@gregfarz78 I planted a fig tree a few feet away from the greenhouse (outside) and the roots grew under the greenhouse frame and took over the composted beds on the inside. Within two years I had to cut it down. They do grow fast and can get pretty invasive if planted to close to structures, etc. Needless to say I had to start over with the beds in the greenhouse.

Rabbits and deer will eat young fruit trees if not protected. Nothing like finding your trees ringed by rabbits. They love the young tender bark at the base.A wire case 2 feet up will do for the first 5 years. After that the trees have a crusty bark protecting them from rabbits.The deer will still eat your leaves if not fenced. Sorry, pain in the butt, I know. I fenced the ares with 8 foot field fence.

A bit surprised you didn't consider putting the apple trees near the chicken coup as when the trees mature they could affect the amount of light for the greenhouse; not to mention that chicken love rotting apples - friends of mine used to let their chicken flock free range under their orchard. Just a thought from another gardener who is always concerned about the amount of light in a limited environment. As always an enlightening, relaxing, and welcomed episode.

From watching the property during different hours of the day, it seems like the best place to put a greenhouse would be the bottom part of the meadow. Around where the solar panels are or lower. With the long winters it would probably produce sooner than up next to the shadow of the high trees. But maybe it will still be alright. Its looking great though!

This is my Sunday morning jewel. My highlights were: My amazement of the crumbled down stone buildings built in such obscurity where you did a drone footage at the beginning of the video. Loving the sound of the rain on the roof of the greenhouse while you were inside working. Got a kick out of the little water toss at the chicken. I was imagining the fresh smell of the grass you were weed whacking around your house. The work seems never ending, and then comes the maintenance. Not forgetting the extra work you have to do just to video and edit for our enjoyment. Eating outside in nature, a big plus. So glad you got an electric bike, on your rough terrain. We have electric bikes and use them a lot, not being afraid of the big hills anymore. Thanks Martijn. Mary from Tucson Arizona.

Hello Martijn, my daughter lives in Portland Oregon & she planted a cherry tree in her back garden. It loves the snow & has thrived, so much fruit you need to put it somewhere where the fallen fruit won’t be a problem when it’s full grown. The tree has grown 30ft over 15 years. She also put in a hedge of blueberry’s ( you need two different varieties) & they have survived the winter snow. I must tell you about these bee hives that an Australian father & son invented. Google “ flow hive “ you will be amazed. Very very little work attached to looking after them & robing the hive of its honey is no work attached at all. Of course the bees will pollinate all your fruit & vegies. Best thing ever…. Better then sliced bread….lol! As always love your videos/ blogs. So looking forward to next Sunday. Stay well & happy. Cheers Noeline. 🙏👏👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I remember when the father & son first started the Flow Hive business! I yearned for one and tried to order but they were having shipping issues. I lost track of them and now they're so expensive I can't afford one. It's a shame but I imagine those that do have them really enjoy beekeeping and the flowing honey! Great suggestion for Martijn.

@@juliaconway5866 hi Julia, the father & Son have moved to Brisbane, Qld. & have a huge warehouse/ factory making the Flow Hives & sending them all over the world. I did not think they were expensive at around $1,300. Because you don’t have to buy all the equipment ( like the Stainless Steel spinning container ect ect …) you don’t have to sterilise all the equipment so makes it so much more simple & a lot less work load. You don’t have to replace the wax honeycomb frames either….. honey flow hives you just pull the handle & the internal wire slices the wax off the frame & the honey flowers out to the bottles you have arranged under the drain hose. So very easy. Not like the original beehives. With the old hives you had to smoke the Bees into a stupor before taking all the honey frames out & then start the long process of spinning the sterilised barrel that you put the frames into to get the honey out. Long drawn out ,messy process & then you have to clean & sterilised everything again & make new wax frames….. on & on it goes… The Honey Flow hives are so very little work with a huge benefit…. At least 20 Kilo of honey per 1 unit. I am really impressed with them. Also great for the environment. If all the bees die, humanity will not survive. I though Tara & John might be able to get sponsored by the owners to Promote this product & make a huge amount of money producing & selling the honey. Win win I say. Thanks for replying Julia. 🙏🇦🇺👏👍

If you plant the trees next to the greenhouse, won’t they shade it as they grow? Why not make an orchard of your fruit trees of apple, plum, pear, cherry, plus walnut? Plus it is growing warmer and you might grow fruits and nuts that grow in a warmer zone. My zone has been elevated from a zone 5 to zone 6. Peach trees produce fairly quickly. It is exciting to watch your progress. I love planting trees and I have great affection for chickens. All animals really. Some trees I planted for turkeys. Once I chased a fox out of my peach tree. I wanted to wait one more day before harvesting and went to bed that night full of expectation. The next morning all but one peach had been eaten. The foxes, the deer, the raccoons and whatever else had eaten all. They must have had a big party with the fox in the tree throwing peaches down for the others as there were peach pits scattered over a large area.

A fig tree is a fast growing giant. They can reach 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide in the first 10 years. If you can baby it through its first few winters, your greenhouse will be in complete shade. Consider moving it in the fall or moving the greenhouse in a few years. I was 28 when I received a bicycle for my birthday. I have never been on a bike before but I could ride the hell out of a horse. So, my balance was good but a bike doesn't know how to step over or around a small rock or run into a curb. My sons, it seems, found this hilarious and I can still hear my oldest, about 7 or 8 at the time, "Hold up! Mom's down again!"

My husband and I look forward to your video every week. So wonderful. I'm hoping the bottom of your greenhouse will not suffer from rot as it looks to be right on the soil. Did you happen to check as to how tall and wide your new fruit trees will become? They seem a little close to your beautiful greenhouse which will want all the sun it can get. Heads that have a bicycle helmet on them are very attractive ... I hope that in future videos we see you protecting that brain.

Martijn it is a joy to watch you improve your property creating your oasis in the Alps. You must be so content with how far you’ve come through so much hard work, organization, determination and skill. I think we all live vicariously through you. Enjoy your bicycle. My son just unpacked his and can’t wait to begin using it, though he has two babies, a wife and a corporate job so his time is limited. If you feel the plants in your greenhouse are not growing fast enough, put a couple grow lights in there. It will increase the plants growth tremendously. Have a good and safe week.

Try moving the camera slowly down a little bit when you fly up with the drone. It gives a good effekt. And just remember that if you remove the Grass from the ground, you deprive the ground from getting its Humus back, wich is part of the brown organic matter that hold water and nutrients in the ground. People often ends up with a sandy soil in 5-10 years where the grass is yellow and the ground is full of ants.

I don't think he's cutting it very often. Probably doesn't rake it all up either. Perhaps he's worried about ticks and wants some groomed areas where they might not attach as easily to your legs as you walk through it. (Don't even know if he has ticks up in his mountains!)

I dont know what roof you intend to put on your greenhouse but i assume glass or plexiglass. Once your apples start to drop & they will you need to consider breakages or cracking. Place your fruit trees near where your chickens can have access to fallen fruit as suggested by another subscriber & get plenty of sunlight. Protect the tender trunks.

The trees should be planted in next to the chicken coop. I planted a fig in my walled garden. It was tiny. 5 years later it was an enormous tree. It took that long for it to bear fruit though. I dont think the fig can be contained inside the greenhouse maybe behind the chicken coop and wrap it in winter
