I find their choice of CoolMax for a toe lining "interesting." I'd actually believe it helps the boot breath better because it has a great reputation for wicking away sweat when used in athletic wear. However, CoolMax athletic wear clothing also has a reputation of absorbing odors that can't be washed out. So to put it in the toe of a boot where it can't be washed & where lots of odors are produced raises lots of concerns for me.

I highly disagree. I've owned 3 pairs rock rooster boots and every pair the junk cork board broke up into chunks and migrated creating voids, and felt like rocks underfoot. Cork board is junk vs hot cork that is bonded to the shoe. Rock rooster are ok , but do not expect a long life. I personally would take old stock die hard or a rocky boot over a rock rooster as a budget boot. For a premium boot go with a thorogood 1957.

I came here to say this. I took a chance on them after emailing them with a list of questions. They took the time to reply back not only promptly, but with pictures and a video of every piece of the boot that I inquired about, as well as why they chose to use it over say other more "classic" materials. Needless to say, it was enough to sway me to purchase a pair. I'm currently on my second week with them and so far I have no complaints (other than they smell like glue/leather dye). Comfort is absolutely top tier for me, and they are wider than say Thorogood or Danner, which is great for me. Even Thorogood's "wide" wasn't quite wide enough for my feet. (I was an avid Thorogood user prior)

If there's on thing I learned since becoming an adult, it's that Made In China products aren't shit because they're made in China, they're shit because the companies that sell them paid for them to be made shit in China. As a child, I was taught to avoid anything made in China. Obviously you can expect China-made products to be worse than products made places that are traditionally good at producing said items. But I do think China gets unfairly written off for reasons that are not entirely their fault.

I bought a pair of RockRooster Roberta (VAP615) boots about a year ago. They have the same vibram outsole and funky insole as that mock toe. First thing I did was swap that squishy insole for cork insoles. Then gave them a good dose of water proofing. I wear them almost every day and they're going strong. What I like most is the huge toe box. I'm very happy with them and hope to get another year or so of use.

I have a pair of these, 2 years I’ve been wearing them to work everyday. They’re not as comfortable as when I got them but all I’d need to do is switch out the insole for a new one and they’d be very comfortable but as it stands they’re just fine and have held up amazingly. I like that the wedge sole has a rubber lining so you don’t get that goofy looking wear and tear like you get with something like redwings were you can see how you walk unevenly on the heel and what not.

I'm very curious to see how something like this holds up to re-soleing... It's got that synthetic midsole, meaning it might need replacing, but if the welt is in good shape it might mean you end up paying only $220-$250 for two full cycles, which is wild...

Vibram will make bespoke outsoles. Over my almost 50-years in the shoe retail and repair industry I've seen this many times. Sometimes the sole will be a unique model for a maker while other times it will be one of the Vibram in-house designs with a bit of an Easter Egg that silently says it is a special made sole for one footwear manufacturer. At one time we were told the best Vibram soles got the iconic yellow label. I can't say that's actually true, but it was floated around the industry at a time. I think it doesn't do much except advertise Vibram now though. I like what you've exposed here and find it interesting. Since they went to the trouble of the leather Goodyear welt I'm surprised that the internal heel counter is all synthetic. Heel counters are very important as they not only protect and resist heel supination and pronation, they are often the only interior part of the boot to wear out before the upper itself. I believe it would raise the bar on this boot had Rockrooster used a quality sweat-resistant tanned leather as the modest increase in cost would be well spent. In the early days of knitted linings Cambrelle by Faytex Fabrics was pretty good because it usually did last a long time and was made to both breathe and transport sweat. If this is genuine Coolmax it has synthetic long fibers that actually have a groove in each strand. The grove was said to also be an excellent conduit (i.e. a gutter) for sweat to be pulled away from the user's socks. The idea is to mimic Merino wool. However, there's differences as one would expect. Simply put, Merino wool does everything better and will resist wear longer while having a natural resistance to the retention of odors that Coolmax must add an anti-microbial element to modestly achieve, if that extra is even added. Leather linings are nice but often, as they are thin and flexible like fabric, wear through wherever there is constant moving contact such as at the outside edge of the small and big toes as well as sometimes where the users big toe nail touches on top. Still, leather vamp linings are considered the finest construction though they are only found now in fairly expensive boots and shoes. All in all, by what you've brought to our attention here, I'd have to agree that this is a solid boot at a fairly low price. One thing I did notice is that the Rockrooster moc-toe looks like a machine sewn crimped version and not a hand-stitched one such as on the Red Wing Heritage wedge sole and on the various Danner Bull Runs. That is OK, but aesthetically the hand-sewn moc-toes look much better. Love your channel!

I'm enjoying these reviews, even though I'm not in the market for almost all of the sneakers / boots / shoes reviewed. [I wear a small, extremely wide women's size.] One thing that would make the reviews even better would be a brief discussion of size and fit. For example, on these low cost moc-toes, I'll bet there are a lot of people with wide feet who want to know which boots run narrow - or vice versa. It wouldn't need to be more than about 10 seconds of talk: "this boot runs wide, our narrow footed tester had too much room even with thick socks".

I think the reason why they can make shoes this cheap, is that labour in general is just cheaper in China, and average citizen's buying power is lower, even tho it had been going up this days. If you look up on Taobao, there are like 875 knockoffs with real leather for like 40 bucks or something, knock off brown leather Air Jordans with a GYW with leather welt for like 60 bucks. But then you can't really have a more expensive boot sold there, cuz that's just around the price what everyone expected, a 120 bucks boot on Taobao that is made in China would be outrageous. There are some other Rockrooster hiking boots selling for like 40 to 50 bucks as well, but they are like, your average hiking boots like Columbia.

I just ordered a pair of White’s Fultons. I like the look of Moc toe boots, I just don’t like wedge soles because, a) I work outside on varied terrain so it’s nice to have a sole that is harder underfoot for durability and has big lugs for traction, and b) wedge soles are kinda ugly in my opinion. It makes sense why guys who work on pavement/concrete/steel would prefer the softer wedge sole, but for my situation it doesn’t make sense. I’m definitely looking forward to getting them and breaking them in.

They are just another cheap Chinese made boot, but they outlasted the Thorogoods by a year. I’m on my second pair. The Rock Roosters look like they are higher quality than the Iron Age moc toes. I might have to give them a try next.

I need a met-guard boot for work, I prefer external met and iron age is the only one I found for a reasonable price. I've had them 2 years and they are still in great shape.

We used to get our boots re-soled when I was stationed at Ft Bragg. The vibrant soles had the same yellow logo. This was in the early 2000s. I always thought the more recent same color logo was a consumer version.

I think if I had been aware of these prior to owning PNW boots I might have tried them first before investing the money in a pair of Nicks and JK's. Thankfully I wound up loving those boots after years of buying cheap Amazon boots that would fall apart every few months, but had I known about Rock Rooster then, I probably would have given them a shot.

I bought RW 1907s today. $30 off and they gave me veteran discount because my dad was there. Not for work but my first GYW "nice" (but still casual) boots. Hoping they break in nice.

12:33 sheet cork is actually better than hot cork! it usually contains less glue and more cork and it doesn't disintegrate or crumble. off course it should fill the whole void though.

Review recommendation next time you get around to Chelseas - would love to see some Canada West Romeos cut up to see if they're a truly re-soleable option to compare with Blundstones, Redbacks, and the like!

I bought the SAP621 and it doesn't appear to have the tumbled leather upper as the pair in the video. It has a steel toe and the advertised as "original" Rock Rooster outer sole. I've always had Red Wing work boots and recently bought a pair of 1907's but at over 300 cost, I decided I needed another pair of boots for the retirement projects that might sacrifice a pair of boots. The Rock Roosters fit that category and they feel pretty comfortable right out of the box. At 110 cost with discount, if I fill them up with differential fluid, I won't feel so bad about it.

Checkout Sureway Moc Toe and Georgia Boots Moc Toe. I think Georgia boot has a cheaper Moc Toe boot that is made in the Dominican Republic Moc Toe boot and a more pricey Moc Toe boot that is made in the USA. Honestly, it would be cool to see if there is any quality differences in the construction between the two, and I am curious to see how they compare to the other Moc Toe boots in the same price range. I also came across Duradero boots out of Mexico, which have a free resole policy on any of their boots. The Duraderos seem well built, but I have read that a few people experienced weird sizing.

If I were in the market for a cheap pair of work boots, I would definitely pick up a pair of Rockrooster boots. However, if I wanted a better quality moc toe boot that wouldn't break the bank, I would opt for Grant Stones.

Thank you for the review. I have veen looking for a cheaper brand of solid work boots and I think these are exactlt what I'm looking for. Ive gone theough several pair of redwings and even had a few pair resoled but I have found that their soles don't last very long. Theur new soles only lasted a minth or two before showing a good ammount of wear and the same after having them resoled. I think I would rather just get a while new boot for about the same cost or slightly more and it sounds like the sokes might even last longer than the Red Wings. If the Rock Roosters are as good as they look like they are I woukd rarher have 2-3 pairs of them for the same cost as one oair of Red Wings.

Just tried these boots like everything about them but 1 thing that heel liner where it is sown rubbed the living crap out of my heel would pull my sock down. I tried it without the insole and was fine. So I think they need to sow it higher or make sure it is flat. Sucks I really did want to like these boots. Ended up going with Timberland Pro Barstow was cheaper and a lot more comfortable. Could you do a review on them?

I always wonder when i watch affordable boot videos, regardless of being barefoot or not-i always try to compare any affordable boot to Jim Green's Barefoot ranger. So my question is-for around 200$ is there any better built boot in regards to the quality of the leather, the seams and welt and lining and overall the whole package? Because in my eyes Jim Green makes top notch durable boot that is tough to beat, even by chinese...

I’m a Canadian Boilermaker&Welder who works in industrial construction. American made will always be better. You pay for what you get. Though, do you care about beating up $400+ work boots? (Cost in Canadian $ after conversion, shipping & duties) or would you rather enjoy it? Having limited moc steel toe options in Canada, Rock rooster is the best bang for your buck at a little over $200Cad and gets the job done for work. Preserving your buy it for life American made for your hot dates
