Casper came back 2 days later because he had tracked the coyote's back to their den. He spent a hellish 2 days and 2 nights battling wave after wave of coyote onslaught. He came back only when his job was finished. He is indeed, a good boy.

It's called temporarily straying, it's a well documented trait amongst experienced guard dogs/animals. Casper intentionally stayed out there because he didn't want to potentially lead more coyotes/danger straight back to his family's home by having his scent tracked.

I'm amazed by his tenacity. That pack's biggest and last mistake was coming to that property. While his partner Daisy relocated and guarded the herd, Casper engaged in a 1 vs 11 battle with coyotes and took out 8. At 20 months old, he put 8 out of 11 coyotes on a t-shirt. That's no dog, that's the Ghost of Sparta!!!

What I didn't see in the chat is that the other dog stayed behind and protected the flock. The crazy thing is that they weren't mindlessly fighting coyotes as part of an instinct. They were protecting. While Daisy stayed behind as a last line of defence, Casper stood his ground like a true Spartan and John Wick'd the life out of those hapless coyotes. I can imagine those coyotes that survived the purge telling this story for generations.

Here in Eastern Europe, we have a large shepherd dogs called karakachans, their behaviour is instinctively different in different settings. If they are walking through a village wit the sheep they are totally calm and gentle. If they are on the hills with the sheep and you are NOT the shepherd DO NOT go near them. If they are at the owner's house and the owner welcomes you they are welcoming and will protect you. If not they will not let you in. They dont have to be taught this, this is how they behave. They are big enough to see off wolves.

I’m not sure if Casper was like wanting to be cared for just so that he could go out again and die on his shield. That’s just delusional, the heroic dog signalled clearly that he had enough, was severely injured and needed urgent attention. Let’s just celebrate that he did a mightily successful deed that virtually retired him from active service for life and he sensibly called for care and comfort - just as his loving and caring owner said, which was duly delivered.

You should learn that l objected to the silly anthropomorphising comment made for a severely injured animal with hardly any reference made to the welfare of the animal after an epic traumatising ordeal. The OC made a one way comment like only our human needs are important. We all know Casper is a herding sheep dog, that’s besides the point, he’s still a loyal animal that suffered greatly, and that was barely acknowledged by the commenter. @Cosmic Muffin ... The point is, he probably had some reasons for acting as he did. What's more, we're always better off giving folks the benefit of a reasonable doubt. ** Where I have to live at the moment, shooting even an arrow or airgun with a capacity above a particular PSI is illegal. For those saying Casper won't be happy indoors because he's a livestock guardian dog: When a livestock guardian dog acquires catastrophic injury or just gets older than dirt, I can tell you from experience they are just as happy to be indoors guarding the home, the humans and the other pets. You're correct that they have thousands of years of genetics telling them what they need to do. My livestock guardian dog was 14 when I brought her in the house. She had severe arthritis and dysplasia. She was quite happy to be indoors because she still had a job to do. She was having trouble getting around outside and her genetics told her to fight anything that came onto the property. She was too old to be fighting, it would have killed her. For the last two and a half years of her life, until she was 16 and 1/2, she was more than happy to be indoors still doing her job. She still likes to go outside and play in the snow, but she was more than thrilled to come in when she was done and lay on her soft cushiony bed. Yes, working dogs need to work, but there are plenty of jobs of working dog will do that don't require them to be in harm's Way anymore once they are injured or elderly. It's more of an adjustment for the humans than it is for the guardian dog

Similar experience but with an Akita. I had moved out and created a farmstead in Arizona 30 years ago and as part of this life journey did a rescue for an 2 year old Akita who had been abused as a fighting dog. I named her Kuraokami as she was indeed a dragon. I spent 6 months gaining her trust and nursing her back to health. Late one evening as I was cleaning up I heard a tremendous howling and ruckus coming from the back of my property. Kuraokami was not in the area and, if you have every had an Akita, you know they don't bark or make a a lot of noise at all. I grabbed my 30-30 and ran to where the noise was coming from. My heart sank as I knew there was a pack of the coyotes in the area, and their trick to get a quick meal, was to lure dogs out into the scrub brush and take them down by shear numbers. I ran out and came up on Kuraokami in a clearing. She was surrounded by, what was left, of a pack of coyotes. 6 lay dead around her, and another 6 still circled. I raise my 30-30 but watched in amazement as one tried to flank her, and she spun on one back foot, grabbed it by the neck snapped it in one fluid motion and killed it without even losing any flow and faced the pack again.. seeming to grin in pure enjoyment. After the pack saw this latest member of the pack die and then smelled me they high tailed it off into the desert and I never was bother by them again. Kuraokami followed me home and fell asleep at the foot of my bed like nothing happened. The loyalty, power and elegance of this breed of dog is amazing and my love for them has never since faltered. RIP Kuraokami you will always be remembered, loved and dearly missed by your former partner and friend. See you in the stars soon.

I wouldn't be too quick to talk about Casper retiring. I don't know what kind of shape he'll end up in after full recovery, but if he's up for it I tend to think he would be happier working and feeling useful and accomplished than retiring and just hanging around the house. I mean, you would probably be able to tell if he liked it or not - he could have some PTSD, in which case he might act hesitant to go out again. But with a spirit like his, I mean, he seems like the "I kicked coyote butt and I'll kick it again!" kinda guy.

Undeniable, unimaginable loyalty. Casper knew his job...and did his job...without question. Courage, strength, perseverance, and bravery. What a Hero!! I hope Casper's retirement is enjoyable. He certainly earned it, and so much more!! This is more proof of why dogs are so much better than humans. We are too ignorant to learn from their standards and morals.

Why do you guys shit on humans every chance you get? Humans can do insanely good things and insanely bad things, dogs are the same. A well trained dog is insanely loyal and beyond great but why shit on yourself and every other human? Good people patched the dog up, if they didn’t the dog would die from his wounds. Stop hating yourself and others

For decades, I worked in the sheep and cattle industry herding livestock on Idaho National Forests. I saw several cases where one or two Great Pyrenees dogs bravely fought large wolf packs to the death to protect their band of sheep. I’ve had LGD’s for 30 years. They should always work in pairs. That way they can have each others back. Dogs working alone are particularly vulnerable. They are ferocious warriors when protecting what is theirs and what they are taught to protect. They are amazing dogs. This dog is a hero to his flock. Thank you to Life Line for stepping up and taking care of him. On that note, get him a partner. Protecting is in his blood. He’d be miserable not doing his job.

In the southern MS/AL/Panhandle FL region, I have heard of very successful trios or quads of LGDs, using Great Pyrs (or similar breeds), usually females, that stay with the the body of the herd/flock, and a single Anatolian Shepherd (frequently a male) that patrols the perimeter and kills intruders. From what these folks tell me, they would never go back to a single or pair of LGDs, because they work so incredibly efficiently in this sort of configuration.
