This video is perfect. Thank you for taking the time to make the video it made my confusion so clear. I finally understand how to make this first round of this doily!!! It's been on my list for many long years.

Yayyy another video!! I think darker threads work well with white backgrounds, and vice versa.
@11Frivole4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right a darker thread would probably have been better on the light background but I've already started the collar in this collar so I'll keep going. :-)

This is so lovely! Thank you so much for all your videos, you have taught me everything I know! If I wanted to make this a collar with an opening at the back, would I start the same way or do the first large ring need to be joined somewhere?
@11Frivole3 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is a good question and makes me think I might do another short video on how to start if you want to leave it open. I've examined the design and this is how I would start if I wanted to leave it open (although it does fit over the head, when tatted in size 20 thread, if you make it closed). I would not start with the large ring but start on a chain (see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poazc4GKjZJ2bck), making only the first full stitch as per the video and then carry on with two Victorian Sets and then make the small ring. Then carry on as normal with the rest of the pattern. For the first "join at the paperclip" you would join to your starting picot instead. I will make a new video that shows this as other people might find it useful. Thanks for your question! :-)

I love your videos! Why do you use the paperclip trick instead of making a picot? Would it make a big difference?
@11Frivole3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Liz, glad you like the videos. I use a paperclip because the join is made on the core thread due to the way the chain faces. Otherwise, you'd have to twist the chain to make a join with a picot. But you could try it, it might not be that noticeable, I don't know.
@hollerinannes77804 жыл бұрын
Could this be done with a standard chain instead of the Victorian sets? Lovely work
@11Frivole4 жыл бұрын
Hello, you'd have to adapt the pattern if you wanted to use regular chains because the victorian sets make a straight chain for the trellis look, it you used regular chains, they would curve.

I'm curious why you don't tat regular rings (wrap core thread around the hand). Is this a personal preference or is it critical to the final effect?
@11Frivole3 жыл бұрын
Hello Fran, using SCMRs lets you take all the thread from the ball (no need to refill your shuttle) and also means you never need to reverse work which I think is easier when working on a larger/longer piece like this. Also, it means you're always working from the front so all your stitches are right side up. But no, it is not critical to the final effect! :-) Although... if you reverse work and make a regular ring with the shuttle, you'll find that it doesn't work out for making the next victorian sets, you'd have to cross your threads. However, I have to tell you that in fact, I did make regular rings in the next Victorian Trellis I'm tatting now and it does work to make a regular ring but without reversing work, you then cross your threads to make the next sets but I found it's not visible. You can see this version on my blog if you're interested (www.leblogdefrivole.blogspot.com). Phew! A long answer to your simple question! :-)

I note your comment Ana Silvia. I didn't write numbers and letters because this pattern is available for you to follow and print (see the link in the information box below the video). There is also a written version of the first round available on my blog (link also available in the info box). I hope this helps! :-)

Thank you so much for your videos and your clear instruction! I really enjoy tatting for these 6 months, watching your channel. If it's not bothering you, would you give me a hint for this : Ring 5 p separated by 2ds, close. Repeat r, joining to 1st r by 1st p, and to p of one of central r's. This is fig.26 'Centrepiece' from "Priscilla's Tatting Book No.1", p.9. www2.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/monographs/pris_tat1.pdf I'm confused by this pattern, failing to make the 2nd round go around the first round. How and where should I join the 2nd round to the 1st? Thank you again for your videos. I think my message is gramattically not correct, but I really love tatting now so I wanted to say thank you. Lots of love from Japan💕

Hello, sorry I didn't reply earlier but I was away. I'm going to have to test this to answer your question so bear with me and I'll get back to you shortly.
@11Frivole2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, it's not really clear from the pattern description and I'm not able to enlarge the image big enough to see exactly how the rosette is made. You have five rings in the first round and ten in the second round so you need to have two rings for every one of the first round. My guess would be: R5-5-5-5-5-5, join to picot of ring of first round, R5+(to picot of first ring of second round)5-5-5-5-5, R5+5-5-5-5-5, join to picot of next ring of first round, R5+5-5-5-5-5, etc... Does that make sense to you? That's the problem with old patterns, they can be difficult to decipher!

@@dorieswiftie Hello, you're welcome and I hope the pattern works out for you. Sometimes not only the instructions but even the photos are not that clear on old patterns so occasionally you have to improvise!
