My #1 unpopular PTX opinion is that I prefer Matt to Avi. I liked Avi as part of Pentatonix, but preferred him in the background. Matt, otoh, I just love to hear him sing. This was one of my favorite performances during the series. I'm a total Kirstin fangirl.

It's true that because #10 and #12 were so "stand out", #11 gets overlooked by how good it is. Probably one of the trickiest arrangements they did on the Sing Off.

Yay! Finally a reactor who seems to like this performance as much as I do :D To have the different songs represent the different viewpoints in a break-up is just genious to me, it makes them fit so well, while still being their own thing. And I love all the little things like (as you mentioned) Mitch being there for the drama, Avi puffing up his chest all "Yeah, I got your girl now" and my favourite part in the end, where Kevin just throws his hands up and walks off. XD Not only a great arrangement wonderfully delivered, but such an entertaining watch!

I don't think anyone is sleeping on this performance. I don't care much for either song and I loved it. Once you see the next one you'll understand. There were several talented groups in this, but after this night, there was no suspense as to who would win. Pentatonix saved their best for last with these two performances before voting was opened to the public.

Avi leaving was devastating, but it was HIS decision. He was getting burned out on the road and wanted to have more time to work on his art. The new bass Matt Sallee was a fan who tried out to help them do their Christmas tour and then was asked to stay. No one can replace Avi but it was either get a new base or break up.

Every Pentaholic is on board with you there...Avi is beyond special and an amazing musician which is why we all support his solo efforts. Its unfortunate that the hectic schedule took the toll on him that it did. Now. All that being said...I am loving the energy and passion that Matt has brought to the group and am so happy they found him

As a theatre nerd (along with Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch), I totally loved this thing from the beginning!! The whole conflict between the 2 and the other 3 trying to stay out of it (till Avi made his move, lol!), to censoring themselves on the part with curse words, it was all so dramatic and perfect! You can tell they've done theatre since they were kids!

I love reactors who are singers and musicians! You really understand what they were trying to do and how difficult it was. Scott and Kirstie were great in the leads, but it was easy to miss Mitch flipping back and forth in harmonizing with both of them. That was incredible! There is one more performance out of the remaining three that some folks questioned, but the reactors who are musicians loved it, for the same reasons you liked this. Looking forward to all three!

I miss Avi too. His voice is so rich and rumbling. I think the difference between Matt and Avi is that Avi is just a true bass...I mean he speaks bass. Matt's voice is higher, but he has "learned" to sing bass so he does great, but it's just not as natural as Avi because bass is who Avi is. Love your reactions, by the way! Can't wait to see #12!!

I felt that #5 "Love Lockdown", put them into the lead and #7 "Born To Be Wild" put them in as the ones to beat. #10 "Let's Get It On" brought out the incredible soulfulness of Scott and gave notice to all that this group can only lose it if they mess up. #11 "Since U Been Gone/Forget You" had no messing up, and I agree with you about the difficulty level of mashing these songs together. The next performance, #12, is TOTAL cohesiveness defined.. I do miss Avi because these are the 5 that became embedded into my heart, but Matt has been a solid replacement. I hope your day is marvelous, sir!

You're not incorrect about Avi. He's so unique there was no directly replacing what he did. That said, they do have one new trick with Matt. He can sing very similarly to Scott when he wants to, and visa-versa. So that sets up something new. The same way Mitch and Kirstin often closely harmonize, now they can do that with Scott and Mitch, if needed.

FYI, the other groups on this show had mostly decent mash-ups, but the arrangements were very blocky-a chunk from one song, then a chunk from another. PTX were the only ones to weave the two together to tell that distinct story, and they performed it really well. IMO, it was the one TSO performance that doesn’t work in audio form, because it really needs the visuals to sell it. As for Avi leaving, I was upset when it was first announced, but hearing his explanation and the lyrics in his new songs, which really reveal just how burnt out he was at the end of his PTX career, make me satisfied that he made the right choice for himself. Even Kevin calls the touring life a grind in one of the songs he does with a side project called Triptyq (highly recommend checking them out, btw-they only did about seven songs total, but they are all wonderful).

I love your critiques (not criticism!). Your comments always come from your experience and knowledge, and that’s what makes them valuable. Performance #12 is excellent, but this has always been my favorite for the reasons you’ve mentioned-their ability to do this seamless mashup and tell a story with them blows my mind. And they are still masters at doing mashups. I keep having to remind myself that at this point they were still new as a cohesive group; the ‘trio’ had been singing together for some time, but Kevin and Avi were both new to each other and to the trio. They became such a cohesive group so quickly! And the way Avi and KO work together and off each other is phenomenal! No disrespect to Scott, Kirsten and Mitch, but I believe KO and Avi were why they won. I absolutely love that Avi is making his own music. And the group has changed since he left. Matt Sallee is a very talented young man, but Avi brought something unique to the group. I think of it as his musical intelligence, though that’s probably not accurate, and I miss the expressiveness his voice added to their sound. You can probably tell I’m a huge fan of Avi’s, so I look forward to your reactions to any of his music.

Avi leaving was a great loss, because Pentatonix created something truly unique. They caught lightening in a bottle by bringing together five world class musicians in one group. I’m glad you liked #11. I think part of the reason people don’t like it as much is the lack of emotional impact &/or inability to sing along (due to the bouncing back and forth between the songs)? It’s technically impressive and amusing to watch ... but it doesn’t hit you like Love Lockdown or Lets Get It On did. Ben Folds regularly pointed out when groups were off key, but they only held it against a group if it significantly detracted from the performance (such as the lead singer struggling for the full 2 minutes...which did happen to a couple of the groups.) I personally find it remarkable that this was the only time PTX had a wrong note in any of their performances. The second place team was a college group with 16-20 people who were giving energetic, gymnastics-like performances and they often had wrong notes because of it, but they were really fun to watch. PTX was devastated, personally and professionally, when Avi left. They released a video titled “A message from Avi” where he, surrounded by the other four, made his announcement and explained his reasons. It’s a highly emotional video and leads to tears from just about everyone. The video was released in April 2018, and he stayed through their summer tour which ended in September, and helped them select his replacement during that time. From everything I’ve heard, they’re still friends and they support each other. 6 years is a long time, especially for people in their 20s, who are experiencing new things and still learning about themselves.

Yes very true what you brought up about Avi. That's why it was such a devastating shock when it was just announced out of the blue with mansion Scott having been crying and Avi saying he's leaving on a video that was shared on Facebook with only the lead in of a message from Avi. So we all go there thanking Avi is going to say something about a release or a holiday coming up give us a little clue about something that they're doing because that's what they used to do. And we walked in smiling and part way through I was screaming at my tablet because I was furious and I thought it was the end of the best thing that had just finally started taking off and winning Awards and best selling albums and platinum records and they were supposed to be family and look how hurt everybody is. I didn't know if they'd be able to go on. It's split the fandom because part of them went with Avi and some of us stayed with Pentatonix and some of us mix it between Avi and Pentatonix. But somebody did get hurting us and it was Pentatonix. They lost a lot of fans and it wasn't their fault. Their record sales are down and for the first time we're seeing headlines about new records being set but it's about how low they entered the chart for the first time. They haven't won anything in 2 years. They've barely been invited to sing anywhere. And it's a really difficult thing because people like what they like. I like both Avi and Matt. But they are completely different artists. And I wasn't ready to see the talent in the four remaining members of the group just thrown away. I bought all of their albums and listen to them just as much as the early ones. So I wish that I was enough to put them back on top again because they're certainly putting out good material it's just half the fandoms not listening anymore. Last time I said this somebody came for me and comments and really slammed Matt. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen it's simply a truth. There is a huge effect on the group. And if it was only cuz people like what they like that would be one thing. But a lot of the things I read cuz I hangout in KZbin are petulant like people are angry at the group because they continued to make music without Avi. that makes no sense to me because they're not mad at Avi for making music. Also I have heard people say that Matt took over the group and they don't like it because he's basically not part of the group in their eyes so they don't want to listen to anything they do or support them in any way. I think you've already discovered that KZbin can become a very nasty place and people don't mind saying hurtful things. It's so sad though because they're still so talented and they're just getting better and better. And Avi as well is doing his thing. I personally don't follow him.

My heart breaks for everyone involved. It breaks the most for Avi and his mental health. But it also breaks for how tough it must be for Matt having to fill some big shoes that once belonged to Avi. And it also breaks for PTX for losing a chunk of the fandom all because of some stupid divide over something that never should have divided them in the first place. It makes me wonder if any of those were true fans - after all, true fans are loyal. But what's more important here is loyal fans who are respectful to PTX and Avi, Not to mention being considerate with the notion that change is inevitable in some circumstances and for a situation like this, it's good. But it's nonetheless unfortunate.

Official DramaSydE oh that is disappointing to hear. This fandom used to be known for how nice we all were. The band is constantly saying they have some of the nicest fans and for the most part I think it’s true. I think you’re seeing the trolls who get defensive when you don’t think their favorite is perfect. Who conveniently forget that they grew into what they are today and haven’t always been as good as they are now. I know you don’t like to post the nasty comments so all we’re seeing is people being supportive of you. We subscribed to you because we like what you have to say and like to see people fall in love with our favorite group. So I hope you’ll keep doing more PTX like you said. They’re the people I come to your channel to see and I’m sure a lot of others too. Along with you of course.

I know this is very late, but Pentatonix used a clever stage trick to keep their parts straight. The right side was Since U Been Gone and the left side was Forget You. When Kirste and Scott switch sides they switch songs. Also Kevin and Avi switch rhythm between the songs as they switch sides of the stage.

I agree about Avi. I found them right after Avi had left so I never got the chance to see them with him but they are a different group with Matt than they were with Avi. I don't know that it's better or worse now but it is different. I enjoy Avi's voice more than Matt's and I find him to be overpowering in some of their newer stuff. I think Avi was very reserved in his use of booming base and Matt is louder in the mix than Avi was. Maybe I'm not describing it well. It hasn't stopped me from seeing them live twice with Matt. That said, I also saw Scott and Mitch when they toured as Superfruit on their album Future Friends (amazing freaking album!) and I saw Avi last summer and have tickets to see him next spring when he comes my way again. (He's doing another tour so if you didn't know you should check to see if he's coming your way) He's wonderful to see live.Probably the most genuinely humble performer I have ever seen. Deeply appreciative of the audiences reactions. His live version of Quarter Past Four brought me to tears. I love Kevin's solo stuff, his K'Overs which you are going to LOVE if you ever do them, and I've seen Kirstie's solo stuff which is also really great. I enjoy them more separately than as Pentatonix. Now that's not to say I don't adore PTX I just really adore them when they are free to pursue what really turns them on. Avi is making gorgeous music that he would not have the opportunity to make if he was with PTX still and while I love what PTX does, I really wish Scott and Mitch had more time for Superfruit because I am so anxious to hear more from them. I'm not sure if they will ever let PTX go but if they do, there will still be amazing music (that I will probably like more) still to be had.

I've been watching your reactions for a few weeks now, and love them. I wanted to say not to worry about the people who freak out when you don't like something. You do you! I'm sorry people have been bullying you for it. I love that you're honest in your opinion! People aren't going to like everything a musician puts out, and no matter how incredible Pentatonix may be, sometimes they make mistakes, or don't resonate with people for whatever reason. And your observations about Avi are right--we all miss him. It was so sad to see him go. At least he left amicably, and on his terms. But Matt is also incredible, and I think they've done an amazing job with meshing him into the group. I have also always loved this song, but I agree with most everyone else too that their 12th performance, Dog Days Are Over, was their best on the Sing Off.

Great reaction, as always. I love reactors who are also singers. They know how performances are built and how hard it was to take 5 people who hardly knew each other and make a solid group. I miss Avi for two reasons. One was his classical training, which was evident in many of PTX's most powerful and complex songs. Their newer stuff is more pop oriented than I like, and they haven't had a great original song in a couple of years. The other reason I miss Avi is Scott's current tendency to act as "lead singer" in the group. Avi was strong enough to bring his own musical taste to PTX. Now, Mitch, Kirstie, or Matt rarely do primary leads or write their own songs. I still hope they will step back from the pop, and collab with someone who will bring out the depth and harmony that I miss.

All the raw ability was there, it just needed seasoning, and the competition gave them some of that in a hurry. This particular performance night was all over fantastic for Pentatonix, both performances, but so many Pentaholics are superfans of Dog Days. We do miss Avi, but I am enjoying his solo work also. He needed to be more available to his family and have better control of his schedule. Matt's not too bad.. he's not Avi but who is? He's still got some skill and talent.

I agree with you about Avi. I'm seeing Pentatonix in concert in 3 weeks and I'm sad that Avi won't be with them - even though Matt is great in his own right. It's all good, though - in April I'll be seeing Avi in concert, too!

Yeah, legit. This performance is underrated. It's not only a conversation, I think of it like two sides to the same story. It's really really good. Also yeah, pray that it happens only in practice, but tuning issues ALWAYS happen. You are right about the "human element" as you put it. If you're always perfect, you aren't a musician, you're a robot. Mistakes are at least as important, if not more important than what you did right. It's the reason behind people doing live performance. If it was just about note perfect performances then nobody would do concerts. We'd just play the recorded tracks. Also also, I agree that it sucks that Avi left, but not only is Matt good, but Avi is putting out great stuff on his own now. You gotta lose some stuff to gain other stuff. No pain, no gain, right?

I usually mention this number as one of the most incredible things they do on this show. Maybe I forgot to tell you that? There is somebody else reacting to The Sing-Off at exactly the same time you are maybe it was them I told? Cuz I always say it's number five, number 6 because of the mash-up sklz emerging, number 7, number 10, 11 because the master mix is so brilliant you can't hardly keep up with which song they're singing it is so well mixed ! But I do hear them go off key one time for the first time in the entire show and the judges caught it too, but considering everything that was going on in this performance I don't think that really matters! Still, I don't know that number 12 is technically more difficult? Vocally for the lead singer it is. What is impressive about number 12 besides the whole thing are the surprises. And that is what makes number 12 amazing. And also like I said for Scott, you have to realize that he had lost his voice and as of the morning of the 12th episode he had nothing to sing with. When he Powers through the end of that song by what looks like sheer willpower and every bit of muscle he has to force his breath to make him sing it's a sight to see! That shows the professionalism and how dedicated this group is to doing the best they can whenever they come out. Keep in mind that after the twelfth performance America votes and the winner is decided. So I usually don't watch number 13 because they basically kind of Fall Apart vocally but I understand the mechanics of why it would have happened . Considering Scott had no voice that morning and seeing how hard he pushed his voice during number 12 it's completely understandable. Now, remember before you watch it... after number 12 the final vote is made, deciding the winner. They come out to perform again later that night (after voting is closed) with number 13. And please watch the finale when they announce the winner! They were just kids and it's so amazing to watch them win. They still can't believe this is happening to them and I just think that's so precious that they're constantly shocked that people come out to see them. Even after all these years they are not sure they're Worthy of it. I just love these kids!

This is an incredible arrangement, and they pulled it off onstage. Kirstie was studying musical theater in college, and it shows. This is a top-notch performance--my #4 favorite, after Dog Days, Born to Be Wild, and Love Lockdown. I've been an Avi girl since my very first PTX video, Carol of the Bells. He was always the one I focused on with every new video. I miss him a lot, and my dream is to get to one of his concerts. If I lived in the continental US, I would drive anywhere to make it happen. (But I don't.) HOWEVER, I think Matt is actually a better match to the band. I love his voice, and his personality and energy are a great contribution. He suits their style, and their style suits him. Avi needed to get out of that hectic life, for his physical and mental health. Also, his first love is folk music. His recent life as a near hermit appears to have been very good for him, and those lucky folks who have seen him on tour say he seems happy and gives awesome shows. I love Pentatonix, with Avi or with Matt. I love Avi on his own. And I treasure the friends I've made in the PTX fandom. Most of us are loyal; most of us are really nice people! I'm sorry you've had so many encounters with the vocal minority.

I actually really like this one too, like you say the songs are not the easiest to mash together but they do it so well and it's so good to watch. And so much work and talent on display here, from Avi and Kevin absolutely untouchable in the rhythm section to Mitch's occasional one-man-harmony show to Kirstie and Scott slaying their leads... the whole thing is just masterful. I think the reason I like 12 so much is because of the emotion I feel from the group on it - they all are near the end of their rope it feels like, Scott had lost his voice that morning and the others had to have been strained, they probably thought this was the end but the song was just a powerful vehicle of hope and tenacity that I can't help but get on board with. Plus it's just a good song lol. But that's not to take anything away from this one, which I think just suffers from being sandwiched between Let's Get It On and Dog Days, because this one is absolutely brilliant in its own right. Honestly everything about Avi leaving sucked - his reasons for having to makes me sad, the repercussions on the band and their original music, everything. The only thing I am so so grateful for is them finding Matt, because honestly they had achieved such a good unique thing here and I thought them losing anyone would be the end of PTX... and no, Matt is not the same as Avi and the sound is different, but things like Sound of Silence and Can You Feel The Love Tonight show me that their sound with him is still amazing and I'm so happy for that too.

Gopikachu I read a comment somewhere that Avi even helped out in looking for a new bass and in deciding who to get. So I suppose Matt was the best they could find even up to Avi's standards. At the end of this, you can also see how Avi cared for the group as he did not just want to leave it just like that bc even at the start he believed in the talents and the kind of music that PTX started. All of these people -all six of them - are just great

What a treat! An extra reaction from you. Ok....so since you usually do 2 of these performances at a time...12 is fire (imo) and 13 is PTX's self proclaimed worst performance ever (Scott had completely lost his voice that morning, they couldn't hear each other, they were exhausted, etc) . They liked their arrangement though so, to kind of make up for it, they recorded this in a parking garage. Not the best recording, but the harmonies are delicious. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJWraJ-iabSAbtk So maybe you can watch this one (no reaction needed) if you have a few minutes.

I don’t think people necessarily criticize this number. They might be going off more of Superfruit’s reaction to watching themselves on the sing off. They were cringing a lot their their former selves. I recommend watching it after you’re done with this series. It’s also not talked about much because 10 and 12 are such stand out performances from the show. That and love lockdown. They liked their arrangement of that so much they actually recorded a studio version of it. Just never released it. But yes Pentatonix are masters at seamlessly mashing up songs together. They did it with La la la and Latch too. It’s called La La Latch. It has a video. They also have one that’s a cover and an original mixed together. Hey momma/ Hit the road Jack. One of their Christmas songs Winter Wonderland is mixed with Don’t Worry be Happy. With the amazing Tori Kelly. They also have a video for this.

12 was good, but that's just because so many Pentaholics can't blow Mitch fast enough!!! They're the worst!! In that performance is when Mitch became the Mitch we all know and LIKE from their videos, because as you can see, in the Sing-Off performances he was 5th of 5! A star in his own right, and then all the fans who never watched the show thought he was the lead! Let me explain to anyone reading this: Just because someone can sing high, that doesn't make them the be all and end all of singing!! He just sings high! That rant being said, I don't hate Mitch, but he's no Scott!!

Nothing against Matt ....but Avi was much more than a singer ....he was a " back up" beat boxer .....no he didn't really neat box .....but he did fill in with "sounds" ....with Kevin ..that were not always convential singing. Matt is just starting to delve in to that at least it seems to me ......I just don't see the current line up (well maybe now ....but not at first ) doing something like Daft punk. I could be entirely wrong but it is just the feeling I get comparing then and now.

One more to go before voting commenced. The Finale performances are very disappointing by comparison, so I suggest you stop after the 12th performance. (The first Finale performance is embarrassingly off-key - as if they couldn't hear what they were doing - and the second one is nothing special, except maybe for Kirstie singing in Spanish for a short time. It's more about the host, Nick Lachey, who is singing the lead on that one.)

Sorry you are getting such grief. I want a true analysis of a song by someone who sings or writes music not just yeah it's great again & again. Ignore the defensive mean people. Avi is special & I was drawn to PTX because of his voice, then the beautiful music they did. I still listen to them but the style has changed to a little more pop still great but different....you can't replicate Avi's tone, depth, emotion or musicality he put in the songs. Matt is a musician as well but different genre. Avi's music and voice just reach inside & touches your soul. I am glad for his health & mental stake he is doing his own music at his own pace ...not many would walk away from fame for family. I still like PTX & listen but Avi's music is more to my liking.
