As a cyclist, it's well known that wheels and rotational weight makes a huge difference in how quickly bikes accelerate, decelerate, turn in, etc. The lighter weight is exponentially more important when it's on a rotating wheel than on the rest of the bike/car.

True, although the very large diameter of bicycle wheels and the greater proportion of the overall weight of a bicycle that the wheels contribute (compared to a car) mean the impact of lighter wheels on a bicycle will be hugely more significant.

For those of us on the “other side of the pond” who likely will never get to experience the ‘Ring, it’s fantastic to live it through these videos. Would LOVE to be behind the wheel of the GT3RS. Heck, I’d love to be in the passenger seat to experience that. My time in a NASCAR and taking my GTI to the local track only whets the appetite for more track experiences. Great video, James.

First of all James, im really really happy for you to be able to experiance such things and how everything developped. Remembering the moment on the airfield when u asked if you should make your own channel into the cam of Sam I believe it was, its just great to have followed some of your journey, not all of it. But coming now back to your videos is just wow! Priviledge to see this content and your doing such a phenomenal job of transporting your experiance to the viewer. I believe you when your saying that you recognize the difference - I would not believe many people such a comment... Thank you!! And hopefully you have had the chance of getting to know the German pendant of you already? JP from JP Performance? You both would be so perfect together and would fit for a meetup between buddies - not just on youtube, but on personal levels I think. Love this content! I have been doing comparisons like this with my 997 GT3RS and found out that just swapping the wheels is not enough. The suspension has to match the lighter weight, where it didn't do so well with my 997 stock shocks with mag wheels. It was too light on its feet its bouncing around too much and can't put the power down. Realized you need new suspension and tire pressures to match.

I once swapped out the standard mags on my 2013 Audi S4 for some Advan racing RS2's and the weight difference was 12.6kg to 8.1 kg i.e. 4.5kg saved per wheel. It was quite noticeable in acceleration, braking and turn in.

@iankuah8606
@iankuah8606 Жыл бұрын
It's not just direction change and braking that is improved by lowering the unsprung weight. Acceleration benefits too. About a decade ago we did a test with G-Power, the German BMW specialist tuner in Bavaria, to see if lowering the unsprug weight with their forged alloys made a difference to acceleration to speed. With a saving of about 3kg per corner we measured a consistent 0.1 sec improvement in the 0-100mph time with digital test equipment. The explanation for this is that the available power does not have to rotate as much wheel mass off the line and through the speed range. As Colin Chapman famously said, "For speed add lightness!"

I used to be a mountainbike racer. Minute changes to the bike, such as weight savings in the wheels, were very strongely felt. Getting this changes to express on the stopwatch was basically impossible, and dong the math, it would all become apparent. Weight loss in wheels FEELS a lot different, but it doesn't actually make you a lot faster You're feeling the wheels, but still need to bring along all the other kilos in rider and bike. If the car really feels better, it's a cool upgrade. If laptime matters, I guess math can work out how much the wheels will help. To measure, you need a whole bunch of free laps with a pro driver.

Definitively agree better braking corners speed and acceleration. The con is once the heavier wheels gain momentum and your on the throttle it’s kind of smootherAlso Porsches pull well in the upper revs.

Should have done this as a blind test - put one set on and blindfold the driver until he is in the car - then do it again with the other wheels. Actually do it a bunch of times so you can see if the driver can really determine when the car has the low weight wheels on the car. Obviously there is an emotional bias for any driver to believe the expensive magnesium wheels are “better”. I assume also the tire sizes are the same? Should have put oem tires in both wheel sets .
