12 Altered A Little Golden Books / Flip Through Golden Book Junk Journals

Hi and Welcome! I am Lily and in today's video I am going to do a flip through of 12 altered A Little Golden Book Junk Journals. Most of these are vintage Golden Books. I've given these LGB's a new life and they're now ready for documenting. The special feature about these LGB junk journals is the Golden Spine which I have left in place and without removing it or cutting it out. The little golden spine is an iconic feature which I've left as part of the junk journal.
The Junk Journal has two signatures with approximately 80 pages front and back. The Journal measure about 8"x6" and the spine is 1 1/4".

I love these little golden books. Brings back memories of my mom reading these to me and my brother when we were little. I wish I still had them. I donated them a long time ago to a family who lost their home in a fire. But I am keeping an eye out when I go thrifting. These are great keepsakes. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lily! These are so cute!! I love them. And 12 of them!!?? I am actually working on my own LGB at the moment. I am doing collab with my niece. She is an artist and she is going to draw some characters for me. The one i am doing is Beauty and the beast. Keeping the whole story in there and also saving the golden spine. Woody Woodypecker…. Oh my, thank you so much for showing this 🤩. I have to tell you something, I was born in Transylvania (I‘m German and live in Germany since I was 7 until now). As a kid we had a TV programme only once a week on Sundays I think between 1 and 3 pm in Romania but I remember sooooo well that they were showing Woody Woodpecker, I still can make that sound (hehehe he he). I have to try to find a second hand book somewhere now 😅 You have brought me to make these envelopes, now I‘m also into Rolodex cards and now I‘m watching junk journals 😅 I love the idea but am not quite sure what to use them for or how to use them. I normally make cards (often clean and simple 😅) but I’m open to new ideas and have a lot of papers….

Thank you for sharing your story. I, too remember Woody Woodpecker from my childhood. I'm so happy to know you are watching from Germany, thank you! Junk Journals are no different from a diary or regular journal...the big difference is that the Junky ones are made from of the most random of treasures. Some items are old, others new, some thrifted and mostly found. Mix it all up and Voila! you have a junk journal to document all your heart desires. :) Hope that helps, hehe. ;)

Thank you so much! I've only ever bound the signatures by sewing through the spine and doing the pamphlet stitch. 😊 My main focus is not to cut away the signature Golden spine. 😊

Just awesome. I am prepping my LGBs now - taking them apart and sorting my signatures. I am trying to preserve the golden edge, but some of them are so worn and brittle they are tearing easiy. I was thinking of gold washi tape or clear washi that has gold print. Advice? I also saw some black and gold washi, but didnt know if that would detract from the LGB idea. Help?

Thank you! I've used clear packing tape to somewhat protect the golden foil on the spine. After I carefully remove the signatures I open and lay it flat then use sticky clear packaging tape over the golden spine. The packaging tape seals the spine and it's wide enough to overlap the front and back cover making it somewhat sturdier. It may be impossible to save all the golden spines as I've seen some in pretty bad shape. Regardless of what you do I'm sure it will turn out great! Thank you so much for being here and watching my video. BTW, there is a company online which sells golden foil tape for LGBS's. I've Googled it in the past but I opted for the packaging tape. It's called Gold Book repair tape. :)

How did you tape these delicate papers ? Is there a big role of tape, or do you laminate them?

The only tape I use is the clear tape on the exterior of the golden spine. The papers are divided into two signatures and bound/stitched to the spine. Thank you for watching and I hope you found this helpful.

Hi and thank you for being here and watching my video. It was one or the other and I really wanted to keep the Golden spine. I only trim a minimal amount of the page width maybe a half inch or under. I have also just folded that half inch of the page instead. Hope that helps. Thank you! 😊

Well I think I was quite clear - I don’t like what you did to these cute classic little books- I think your idea would be great if you used the generic white books you can buy wholesale and create whatever you want with them - taking a existing golden book and splitting up the story’s pages with scrapbooking type little random patterned paper note cards, sleeves and tassels etc. just is chaotic and confusing to a child- I see you are from San Fransisco so that explains a lot- simply put - your destruction and chaotic creation makes no sense - especially to a child’s mind- just saying

But why destroy these classic little golden books- not understanding why you are mixing the actual book text with a bunch of odds and ends printed papers with little sleeves? I get the idea but why not just use brand new white generic story book blanks??? This whole project is very confusing - so the child has all the chaos of these paper sleeves for what??? It’s a book to read not a journal- just a waste of the classic little golden books
