My Zero SR is perfect for my 25 mile round trip daily commute to work. I ride rain or shine, and only put it up for icy roads here in Michigan. If I wanted to do a longer trip It would make more sense at this time to have an ICE bike, but for everyday use, even to the grocery store, The SR does the trick.
@BOT-dv9lz5 жыл бұрын
Same here. I drive the DSR since april 2016, and i use it for everything exept for the long trips. I commute, go shopping, take my kids (one at the time) for many trips around. I could have the type 2 charger, but i bought a second bike (gas) instead for the long trips ( a 91 Honda Transalp (same price)). But i miss my DSR going on the long trips. The DSR is about 10-20 times cheaper to use then a petrol/diesel car (in Norway) and needs nearly no maintenence (no engine service at all) . After 3 years and close to 20000km the battery is even better then new, going about minimum of 130km (fully rigged with to persons in about 110km/h) to 230km (3 emty Givies and 1 person in 70km/h) with a average of 170km. It always puts a big smile between my ears 😁.

I like the FXS. The price and performance are highly competitive with gas bikes. Specially "twist and go", like the Honda automatic bikes or maxi-scooters, and in torque it smokes them all. I have Zero dealership just 3 miles from my house. No need to pre-order some bike from Europe I've never tested. Batteries in the FXS are easily exchangeable, so you can have an extra full battery waiting at home, and you can ride again in 2 minutes. When I can afford it I will get one, no question.

I'm sorry but putting "Pre-Order" bikes on this list is BS. I own a Zero SR and one of the primary reasons I bought it is because it's been out for years. Zero struggled through some initial issues and now has a reliable, fun bike that you can actually own. Many a electric motorcycle companies have never gotten out of the "pre-order" or "coming soon" phase and others have shipped bikes only to be crushed by the issues of having bikes in the real world. Zero, Alta and Victory are the only ones with real world products. Alta makes the best hardcore off road bike. Zero makes the best street and mild off road bike. Victory makes a bike that is slower, cost more, has less range, requires gear shifting, and requires more maintenance.
@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
I understand your idea but I also wanted to show that the electric motorcycle market is growing and the manufacturers that managed to bring their products to the "pre-order" stage deserve at least some credit. If I didn't include them I'm sure that someone would blame me for posting outdated information.

I know this reply is kinda late but I think those prices are reasonable. Not in the sense that I would pay $40k for a motorcycle but that the companies need to do a lot of research themselfes and probably wont sell a lot of electric bikes so they kind of are reliant on someone buying overpriced motorcycles in order for them to be able to build new models.

the zero sr is worth it as you will spend jack shit on fuel and electric is way cheaper to charge
@MaxAndHisBike6 жыл бұрын
@BroToPro that's acrually not really true. Right now an electric car is as expensive to charge as a petrol car, depending on where you live petrol might even be cheaper
@bobbobby26286 жыл бұрын
@max That is simply not true. The Tesla model S' battery, for instance, has a 90 kwh battery for 500km of range, which, supposing a 0.20$/kwh electricity fee ( which is extremely high, even for the US) would end up costing you 3.60$/100km. Your average compact hybrid consumes 4.6L/100km, which, assuming a 1.00$/L fuel cost (lower than current price), would end up costing your 4.6$/100km. So even with the most conservative estimates, the electric vehicle would cost less to drive than a petroleum car, and that is, keep in mind, comparing what is pretty much a supercar to a compact hybrid. Let's also not forget the lower maintenance fee you would benefit from owning an electric car.

Zero 2016 SR owner here. Love the bike. But the specs (in the video) are off. Charging at home is ~nine hours. Yes, you can charge to 85% in one hour -- if you have a few thousand extra to spend on after market chargers. Makes me wonder about their stated specs about the other bikes. BTW, the SR is a fantastic bike. Real-world range: 100 miles @ 55 mph; up to 150 miles, if you're on the backroads and not being too aggressive. Either way, it's loads of fun! Maintenance costs are far lower than in ICE bike. Equivalent "miles per gallon" is something like 400.

As long as the prices are that high I will buy a gasoline bike: I only need a small one for city commute (my current bike, 125CC is more than enough for the round the clock slow traffic and dangerously bad roads) and with the the price difference I can get way more than two years worth of petrol. I can take a standard gas bike into any garage and they know how to fix it and spare parts are widely available. Ergo, electric bikes are going to be luxury vehicles for many years to come, especially as long as manufacturers don't think people in the market for their first bike.

The specs on some of these are getting very close to, if not actually quite there with what I would use for my Greater Bay Area travels. What's missing from all of these models shown is the ability to carry stuff. Still waiting for someone to show me an electric moto in sport touring configuration: with a topcase that can hold two full-face helmets (or bags of groceries) and side bags that can hold at least a weekend's worth of street clothes, possibly rain gear & whatever stuff I might need. With a real-world range, fully loaded, that can get me from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa or Sacramento for a weekend trip (where I can charge up where I'm staying for the return trip), or round-trip down Skyline to Alice's then out to the coast and back on Hwy 1 with just the topcase and maybe city bags. And a full fairing with (preferably adjustable) windscreen for comfort and aerodynamic efficiency at speed. Once I see something like that for sale, I'm on it. As it is, I'm fixing to sell my latest BMW RT (a 2007 model, the latest of at least half a dozen I've bought, new and used, over the last ~25 years) and rent for the 2-3 trips/year I take out of the Bay Area - one to the Pacific Northwest, one to Southern California, and usually another to Fresno or another mid-state location - understanding that battery range will need to get a lot longer and and charging speed will need to get a lot quicker before they'll do for a long road trip. The cost of ownership isn't worth keeping a moto like that in the garage, and with rental, I can try different makes and models. But I'd really like to have an electric moto for local riding. It's getting close enough I can almost taste it. I can hardly wait...

Zero Motorcycles have a special online shop for extra accessories, maybe you'll be able to find anything you need there?

Thanks. I've looked there. The largest available topcase doesn't seem quite big enough (again, I'm spoiled by my BMW RT); there's no picture available of the hard side bags, but they might do. I'd want to do a test ride with either or both of the available road-type windscreens at speed to judge whether they'll do.

@dwc19647 жыл бұрын
I've finally gone to a Zero dealer and it does appear that they're able to accept various sizes of Givi etc. bags. I guess I'm so used to my BMW RT with its custom-fitted bags that I didn't even think about aftermarket accessories. I still would like a custom-fitted sport-tourer-style fairing with electrically adjustable windscreen, designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. It wouldn't bother me if they doubled the battery size/weight either if it would increase the range, as I'm used to a heavy bike.

You have to take all electric bike range claims with a very large pinch of salt and a very small throttle opening! In my (considerable) experience you might achieve half the claimed maximum range if you ride normally out of town. In town, 100 miles plus is certainly achievable.
@gymkhanadog7 жыл бұрын
Wait a sec... you said the funky bug looking bike was first to market with an "affordable" E-cycle with good range, but we know that's not even remotely true. Especially affordability! Johammer has only been around since 2014 and their offering is not only significantly more expensive, but has less range and is far less practical than something like the Zero SR you featured. And less stylish IMO. And the fact that it has a hub motor means it has serious practical limitations, acceleration and longevity being the two big ones. And the cantilever front swingarm leads to bizarre handling. You can even see the people in the video struggling a little in corners, unable to maintain a consistent line. Zero by comparison has been around since before 2006 and has spearheaded pretty much all major R&D for E-cycles. Half of their offerings already well exceed the Johammer in terms of range and have done since at least 2013. And even the wiz-bang brand new Zero S and Zero SR are $10,000 less expensive. Feels like with the Johammer you're paying for funky fake-retro Eruopean styling.
@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
i never meant to underestimate Zero Motorcycles. That is why I included two of their bikes on the list. They have the best electric lineup among all the manufacturers and there is a phrase, where I say that Zero SR offers the best performance for the money. Speaking of Johammer J1, personally I think that they managed to attract the most of the public attention to the developments in the electric motorcycle segment.
@gymkhanadog7 жыл бұрын
I have no issue with you understating or overstating Zero, what I took issue with was the incorrect statements right at the very beginning of the video misrepresenting Johammer's range and affordability. At 26 grand it is far from 'affordable'. At 93 or 124 mile range, it's not the best, it's not the worst. And I think we're going to disagree on Johammer attracting attention. Zero's been around since 2006 and has been to countless public events. They have their products used for police departments, security and search and rescue. Ask anyone in to motorcycles, "Say the first name you think of when you think Electric Motorcycle" and I'd put a buck on them saying Zero. With all kind and due respect, Zero should be in the #1 spot. :)
@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
The bikes are not ranked in any way. All of them are added in a random order. So, I was 100% sure, when I said that Zero SR is the best bike for the money. But there are many people, who wouldn't agree with me. There is no universal bike that would be "best" for everyone. That is why there are so many of them out there.

Yep. The weight distribution of an electric motorcycle is different from the ICE, so it could be a solution for better handling. Well.. affordable bikes right, full electric -save money on gas right ?. Let's say lighting bike -supersport. $38K whooaa. For example - Ducati 1299 Panigale is around $21K (new). Tank range around 100 miles, so for 30K miles,let's say 10K per year = 3ys, current prices = around $6300 for 30K miles. Why do most electric bikes need to be so expensive? Technology looks so much more simple than the conventional motorbikes including their current day IMU electronics.
@alan-sk7ky6 жыл бұрын
Because they are not yet mass market, until the mid 1920's cars were very much a thing only for the more well heeled in society, we will have to wait for the next Henry Ford or Herbert Austin or Bill Durant to do the mass market thing.

Which ones (besides zero) are available in Australia?
@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
I will try to do some research for you. But I think it could be better to pick the bike you like the most and ask the manufacturer directly about the availability.

Sadly, Zero have just decided to withdraw from the Australian market, but there are quite a few keen owners there, with a lively owners' group.

The higher purchase price is offset but the minimal maintenance costs. But if cars are any indicator, you'll need a new battery in 5 or so years. Shouldn't get a used one and are you going to risk a new one from Ebay? My 1978 CB750 still runs like it's new.
@automotiveterritory6 жыл бұрын
"Like it's new" is a brave statement, considering that the motor is 50 years old. Yes, the battery is the only weak link in any electric transport but the technology is getting better year after year. So lets assume that you will have to replace a battery pack in 5 years, you will be probably getting a better one, that will have better range too. How does that sound?

Bikes obviously don’t travel 300 kms per tank. I used to have a Ducati and the max I would get is 175 to 200 kms. But cars usually do get between 300 to 400 kms per tank before refuelling. If it’s only city driving then it’s fine but some people do travel by highway. In time with greater development of batteries we will get there.
@automotiveterritory5 жыл бұрын
Eventually the manufacturers will find a way to serve those, who need to go to the highway. There are several ways to solve the issue: more charging stations, better or bigger batteries, or batteries that could be easily replaced/rented, etc.

Sorry to say this but these motor cycles should have half the range of electric cars surly. That means around 200 miles at top speed as most top electric cars now can do 400 miles on a charge. So to me these bikes have it wrong still.

If an electric vehicle can get similar range in miles (kilometres) as a car eg: 300 to 400 kms then that would be an appropriate range. Few if any that I know haven’t attained that yet. I think in a few years once development has improved we will see that. The of course prices also need to match internal combustion engine vehicles as well. Given time they may get there soon
@automotiveterritory5 жыл бұрын
Isn't it a bit too much? So many batteries would make the bikes too heavy. And do you think that an average rider travels close to 300 kms a day?

zero emission? The Lithium or LYPO batteries just grow on trees? and making aluminium is a eco work?
@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
Zero emission means that the product, an electric motor, does not produce any emissions. Gas-powered vehicles use almost the same components, as electric ones. So it's the battle between a vehicle that makes emissions, when in use. No one is talking about the manufacturing process.
@mastersaimon7 жыл бұрын
Im talking about the manufacturing process emissions.
@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
Cell phone batteries use a similar manufacturing process, gas production is not less hazardous but I don't see anyone mentioning it. Electric vehicles are zero emission but it should be noted that they are only less polluting than other vehicles. This will remain an issue until recycling process becomes more efficient.

9:20 "as the topspeed is impressive 150mph" Sure, 150mph is a lot but honestly, almost every 1000cc Sport bike (S1000RR, GSXR 1000, H2, R1...) can reach around 200mph which is quite a lot more.
@automotiveterritory6 жыл бұрын
Since the technology is still emerging, we still want to give electric bikes a pass. Maybe in a few years being electric wont be an excuse for the weaker performance. But did you get to see the Lightning Motorcycle? It is the fastest on the planet and it is electric

I need a bike that can reach up to 600 miles in a single charge with super fast charging less than 30 minutes for full battery charge and speed of atleast of 150 mile/hr. Is there any e-bike like that?
@automotiveterritory5 жыл бұрын
You are setting unrealistic standards. Why would you need 600 miles of range? Batteries like this don't exist, if they did, we'd all have cell phones that last for weeks, not days.

@automotiveterritory7 жыл бұрын
As far as I remember, project LiveWire didn't show any progress recently. It is still in the prototype stage, although Harley-Davidson promised to release the production model by 2020. But for a bike that is to be released in 3 years, its specs can only be characterized as humble.

@pnblondon10877 жыл бұрын
The LiveWires were all prototypes. I rode one in 2015. Much nicer than any conventional H-D but the battery was kept artificially small to keep the weight down. One would hope that by 2020 a good range will be possible without a massive battery...
