As always, you're advice is really insightful & beautifully expressed Pea. The particular insight I hadn't considered is that the peoples of different islands in the Philippines behave differently because the culture is not uniform across the islands. I remember you have addressed this before but I had forgotten it. The cultural split that is always emphasised is the city/province difference and the poor/educated distinction. Now I understand that the Philippines is actually an archipelago of different cultures too & I need to be alive to this when I explore.

Anything that you can do in the US in one trip, 5 to 10 minutes max, will take you numerous trips, waiting in lines, sorry po closed today, sorry sir you need another form, it goes on and on. Most things you can get used to in time once you learn the ropes, but things change all the time and things open and close whenever the mood strikes them. it's very similar to Mexico in the day to day, but at least most speak English. Brown outs, wifi stops working for days, typhoons shut down stuff for weeks at a time. You have to live away from Filipinos unless you can deal with constant roosters crowing, dogs barking, yelling, singing karaoke, drunks, and party's that go on all night. You MUST have health insurance or plenty of money, they will let you die in the streets there, it's not like the US where they try to get money later, they screen you for payment first. Kanos are assumed to have health insurance/money so in emergency they would probably take care of you, but as soon as they find out you don't, you are out in the streets. You can't return anything once you buy it, it's yours, you have to pay cash even for big ticket items, I could list a hundred things that will drive you crazy. You MUST have the patience of Job there, and ideally a Filipina to buy your groceries, market, and navigate the nonsense, or you will pay double or more, although that's not as bad as it was years ago. Hire a maid it's cheap and let her shop and do as much for you as possible to make life easier. Too many things to even list really. DO NOT keep a Filipina that approaches you if you're looking for a wife, no bar girls, no skimpy dressed girls, or mall workers. You want a shy girl working at the market or a roadside stand with her family, trust me... Trash everywhere, don't eat roadside food unless you have a strong stomach, drink only bottled water, man there's just too much to list. Lastly it is HOT AF there and way humid, and don't plan on driving in the big cities, manilla and Cebu especially, it's insane and no one follows any driving rules at all, while smaller towns and province are just fine... Good luck...

I kicked around the idea of retiring to the Phils but I doubt If I will do it. I'm sure I'll visit and or vacation within the next twelve months but move....don't think so. Anyway, another great post. I hope other foreigners listen to every word you said and take it seriously. You did mention something I have thought about often....If a foreigner moves to the Phils...what do they do all day? How do they stay productive and busy? How do they occupy their days...day in and day out?

As I have been to Phils most of the last 15 years. A month a year. Had to get used to the idea that COLD is not cold as I am used to in NYC for refreshments and the weather. A girl told me it was cold and it was 70. I was happy and she had a sweater on. There is plenty of changes but most are great. For me simplicity works best. I have never had a problem meeting women just being out and about in Manila and Cebu. Meet women social and not online even if it's easy. Make the effort. Stay away from bargirls! It rarely ends well for the foreigner who deals with them. Bad habits and vices are cheaper there, be careful! Your channel as usual is fantastic. Keep up the work and rarely addressed topics.

Hi sis. Great vid!! I'll add this advice. When you first get there, have arranged an air BNB or apt already lined up. Hotels are cheaper there but the costs quickly add up if you're island hopping. Eating out is another thing that will eat up your money. Pention houses are good options. Try to stay in 1 place for at least 6 weeks to absorb the local flavor before you move on to another spot that's at least 200km away. Good luck and Holy Father bless😊 1 more thing I should add. Some things in the Philippines are indeed cheaper than your country, SOME THINGS!! For your first month or 6 weeks. Have at least 3k USD in your pocket with access to another 2 available. The first month is ALWAYS the most expensive.

Pea all good advice! Especially taking a long visit and visiting many places before deciding to move there permanently. As far as a budget. that seems to vary wildly from individual to individual. It all depends on so many factors like where you want to live, how much aircon you use whether or not you eat out every day, and if you only like western food. I would also tell a first-timer that you will spend more than you budget on your first visit and if you are moving there your first few months will be filled with extra over-budget expenses. You might need to put deposit money for an apartment or have to buy some furniture, sheets, towels, cooking implements etc... I would say if your budget is $2000 usd a month you should count on spending double that in the first month or two.

Pea almost touched upon it, but in my experience the biggest reason to stay away except for a vacation is that the Philippines IS NOT FREE. Look it up. I have not found a single organisation that rates freedom have the Philippines any more than partially free. Well that just means that the people have a few freedoms. At least in America there is a constitution that protects most freedoms, even if it can take a while to get a court ruling.

I visited in February, weather was perfect. I am here now, weather at sea level is very hot and humid, so I am going to visit Baguio City. I have visited Valencia (Dumaguete) and it is nice as well. In general temp at sea level is 32, Valencia 27, Baguio 23. As a Canadian the latter two are better for me because I cycle and exercise outside daily and it is too hot for me at sea level. So all sea level locations are off my list. Otherwise I love it here, but come for a long visit before you move here is my #1 advice. Cam

@@bullfighter42 I have made several videos on my trip. Being a target was one of the most difficult things to deal with. I have travelled extensively in the military, but it is different when you are by yourself verse with a group of 5-10 Americans. Being overcharged was the normal, everyone thought you could spare a few extra pesos rather than being honest about the cost. I did not appreciate being taken advantage of...I of course knew what was going on, but it gets tiring after a week or two dealing with it. The poor verse the wealthy were right on top of each other, and the difference was pretty immediate and stark reality that most have to deal with in the Philippines. I have seen a lot of Vloggers do poverty tourism, it's pretty disheartening to see. Who benefits? The Vlogger (small or big) who has the money to run around with a 500-1000 dollar camera. I did not do this but it's something that Americans making the trip need to be aware of. There is a lot of reality outside BGC / Makati. I spent most of my time in the Nuvali area in Laguna...Enchanted Kingdom ext. BGC, Rizal Park, Intramuros and American National Cemetery were the most notable things I saw. I am a Navy Vet and really wanted to see where my Step Father lived when he was a Child in Cavite. I was able to take some pictures of the city but was not allowed on the base. It's a former US Installation...I was told by multiple people tourist were allowed on the base, when I got there the gate guard told me no along with no pictures of even the front gate (I completely understand, but others had obviously been successful seeing the old base so I am not sure why I was denied). A bit disappointing.

For those that have never been to the Philippines, or other third world countries, the lack of infrastructure will probably come as a big shock. Roads that aren't maintained, regular interruptions in basic utilities, Inernet speeds that will remind you of the old dial-up days, and a general lack of amenities that you take for granted in the West. The Philippines is not just a destination, but a state of mind. 😉

Embrace the culture not hide from it. Make use of the local markets instead of supermarkets. Don't try to always live in Western-style homes. Embrace the traffic it is not as bad as portrayed too many ex-pats exaggerate. use a realistic budget and ensure you put away money each month for possible emergencies. Don't seek out too many ex-pats to be friends with, make friends with the people of the country. The best thing you can do is watch the Pea because she provides realistic info and advice. And no she did not pay me to say that!

I live in northern europe. I have been in the Philippines a number of times. For me the great things with the Philippines is to not have freezing degrees outside 4-5 months a year, friendly people who actually talk to each other (up here people are very reserved) and that you can help people who are really in need - homeless in the street, help an orphenage or something similar.

Hi Pea, good evening. I actually understand foreigners not being able to own land in the Philippines. The way I look at it is if a bunch of foreigners buy up the cheap costing land in the Philippines 🇵🇭, Filipinos may not be able to afford any land for themselves. When you have a shortage of land available the price of land skyrockets. So I agree the Philippines 🇵🇭 are doing the right thing for its people. In reality, every country should look out for their own citizens first. That's my opinion, good or bad.

Cheap land myth: Father in law has beachfront property next to a resort.14 acres. He turned down $340,000.00 USD offer..... In their culture land has more value than gold(it's an island nation) and is to be held for future generations. There is "cheap" land: usually on the side of a mountain and so steep you can't walk on it. Condo's are cheap: if you like crazy high population densities.Single family homes are "cheap": if you're OK with your neighbor raising 20+ pigs on the other side of your fence.....

@George My Filipina wife and I just purchased 1 Hectare for a little farm. The lawyer told me that he was adding me (American with a permanent ACR card) to the new land title along with my wife. He further explained that in the event of her passing the land would be mine. I think this would prevent any of her family from trying to make a claim on the land but I don't really know what would happen if I would try to sell it later. ps. We used the services of a land agent - think realtor - she was paid 5% of the total purchase price paid for by the seller. We spent two months together looking to find the right fit.

Flashing wealth will backfire. A Filipina will likely feel insecure with a foreigner. She's trying to impress you, land you. If you talk of your wealth that just makes her more insecure to the point of giving up. IMO this is a the main reason why Filipinas are OK with older men, fat bellys, drinkers, smokers, not so attractive because all those minuses are pluses to her because it makes her job easier...hopefully. You're a foreigner. That means it's assumed you're wealthy. Most foreigners say they aren't wealthy, but to many Filipinos a guy getting a $800 monthly check guaranteed by a stable government IS WEALTHY.

1. Don't fall in love with a girl you never met in person. 2. Force yourself to date at least ten girls in the Philippines before you pick one (or pick three), even if you think you already met the girl of your dreams. Don't worry, she's not going to drop you if she thinks you are meeting other girls. You may be surprised to find her trying harder to keep you. 3. Don't try to hold her hand, kiss her, or hug her in public (except maybe a dark empty movie theater). PDA is not a thing there and it will make her uncomfortable. Save the action for the hotel room, you won't be disappointed. 4. Don't take a province girl to a western or any non-Filipino restaurant. She won't know what to eat and won't like it. Best results will be had by feeding her fried chicken, rice, and more rice. 5. Don't assume the girl you met is a distinct individual. She is part of a cult-like interdependent collective known as her family. She has no opinions or feelings or thoughts that were not provided to her by her mother or other family members. It's not that they are controlling her, it's like they are all one organism and each person is an appendage of that organism.

Kind of reminds me of the same mistakes many Filipinos make when they move to Canada. And probably anywhere else they decide to move. That being that thinking that they are leaving behind all the troubles and heading to a paradise that will solve all their problems. Only to have found that they got flipped out of the frying pan and into the fire. Sorry, no pun intended. But so many who newly arrived think they are going to buy a house with the pocket change they have. That they cut so many ties, as you said, burnt so many bridges, that they can’t go back. That they have also found someone online here that they are hoping for the fantasy fairytale Prince or princess charming. Many of them have left their spouses and families behind to start all over again. Unlike the foreigners there that can rarely find other foreigners to gather and socialize with, I’ve never met a Filipino that didn’t instantly find the almost always large groups of other Filipinos in every city there is. The main export from the Philippines is Filipinos. There is approximately 80 million people in the Philippines. I am very sure there must be 300 million more Filipinos living abroad. They are everywhere and in large numbers :-) In the USA the three most popular languages are English Spanish then Tagalog. Not in all states, but quite a few of them. Many of them go right back into the same lifestyle they just left. They forget all their education and experience and get a basic menial minimum wage job and get a basic menial place to live, usually in a boarding house, as roommates seem to be not an option as it is with the locals. Boarding houses are usually much more expensive than finding a roommate to share expenses. The boarder can expect to pay almost as much for one room and sharing a kitchen and washroom then if they just rented the entire place on their own. Many years ago, I even met one pinoy that was renting the corner of a basement without walls for more than I was paying for my entire self contained two bedroom apartment. No matter how I and my pinay wife tried to convince him otherwise, he was sure he was getting the better deal. Yes, the other corners were also rented. No one had walls, nor privacy. Addresses are always an odd thing to not have. And they get used to that so much that when you ask somebody where they live they only give you the general area and still expect you to find their house they are staying in. One phone call about an address I had to tell the person to go outside and look at the front of the house to tell me the number so I could come visit. They didn’t know the number. They were shocked when they saw there was a number. As to the previous topic of relationships and having left everything behind, it always surprised me that most Filipinos come to at least my area of Canada too find The other Filipino that they were communicating online with. Not a local, what you would call the foreigner. Having have frequented enough karaoke at house parties with my Filipina wife, The vast majority of couples were Pinoy and pinay. I was almost always the token white guy :-) that is always what has made me think that the Filipina back home isn’t looking for a foreigner because he’s a foreigner but rather because he can take her away from the frying pan into the fire 🤣🤣. She just doesn’t know it’s a fire yet. Almost all your videos are for the foreigners visiting the Philippines. Maybe you could have one aimed at the Filipinos looking to be a foreigner in another land, usually through romance. give them some insight of what they might be looking towards even if they were to venture out entirely on their own so that they can also avoid the pitfalls ahead of time and be more successful in their adventures.

Great video, been living in Iloilo with my wife for 12 years (married 30 years) so we knew what we where getting into, but still here are a few extras that got me, Noise: generally Filipino's rather enjoy a party and a wall of speakers for a birthday party, celebration, Barangay fiesta and "oh my lord" drunk karaoke is the norm, basically if it can't be heard from miles away at 2AM they are not trying hard enough. It took me a year to acclimatize (and don't get me wrong It is for us the foreigners to adjust not the Filipino): Overcharging, you will be overcharged at some-point, don't get angry don't scream at the person, just point out that you think you have been overcharged and normally you will get a "Sorry" and they will correct the "Mistake", a lot of servers etc are on really low wages compared to the West, it is what it is, just chill. lastly and most Importantly DO NOT EVER disrespect the Filipino, you are a guest in this beautiful country and of course disrespect here is an offence that can and will get your visa revoked. Remember people are people no matter where you are in the world, yes there are a lot of beautiful young women who will seek marriage to foreigners because of the improvement to themselves and there families, but that doesn't mean there cant be love too.

Thanks, Pea very good video with a lot of helpful comments. I would say there's one you missed and that's with getting your finances in order with respect of taking money out of Filipina banks and not paying a charge for that. Like Wells Fargo has a savings plan where if you put enough money in when you go to take money out from a foreign bank you won't pay that fee. So that is something to think about as you'll be taking money out of banks quite a lot when you first get there and then throughout living there and not paying that $5 or $7 fee it adds up. Another thought I had is I know it's good to travel light but laptops phones that kind of thing. They're cheaper here in the states so buy yourself a decent phone and actually I would get one on the larger side because a lot of times Wi-Fi is not great and so you'll be using your data plan. So get a large phone even if you don't like it. You'll be glad you did. You touched on this on one of the points but I would say get in the best shape you can for your age and I don't mean all muscular but able to walk for long distances because when you first get to a foreign country you won't know the price of anything and when you go to take transportation it will cost a lot and so being able to walk can save you quite a bit of money. Anyway, it was a great video. That's my two cents about living in foreign country as I lived in southeast Asia about 20 years

Pea, Absolutely fantastic advice. It amazes me how many people don't plan or look into the ventures they think about. Moving from one city to another, or one state to another here in the US is nothing like moving to another Country all together. You touched on several of the biggest considerations ( economy, laws and restrictions ). I've been researching a few different Countries for a couple years and am finally down to 2, Costa Rica or the Philippines. I haven't been to the Philippines in years, but am planning a trip there this year. I'm fortunate enough to have an uncle that is from the Philippines and he and my aunt own property there ( my aunt was stationed there in the 60s ). This doesn't mean it will be easier to decide though. Only that I have some relatives there ( that I haven't seen in 35 years...lol ). So, come September, I'll be coming to visit. Thank you for the open and honest videos. It's a breath of fresh air.

Hi Pea i love watching all of your fantastic very well researched vlogs. This video is really good advice and tips for all foreigners thinking about coming to visit or live in the Philippines and i include myself as i plan to come to the Philippines in either Oct or Nov or should i wait until Jan-March 2024? My long term goal as a single retired Scot is to live permanently in your beautiful country and either buy a house or long term rental 25 years + your advice is invaluable to me. Thank You Pea. Lunch is on me Pea when i reach Dumaguete/Valencia if you are free offcourse! and you would so choose. Pea can you tell me pls are the any 2 or 3 bedroom 3 bath/ensuites detached properties with your own private swimming pool to buy! or build or long term rental just outside of Dumaguete/Valencia/dauin? I have only seen one property like this on Paul old dog & Baby Mae's YT channel but it was for rent. They did say the owner was building 2 bedroom houses? on his enclosed land but to date i have not seen any videos selling detached vuxury villas with a pool like in Thailand in Hua Hin or Pattaya at reasonable prices. I would value your opinion as i know you are a very intelligent beautiful young lady. My first visit is to visit several islands and places to decide on where i would like to live and ultimately find myself a beautiful rest of life Filipina just like thousands of other foreigners. Hailing from Scotland the pool is totally essential for me as it is very hot in your country and i love a nice clean clear water pool to swim in rather than in the sea but i love the beaches and i love the mountains also. I am definately not a city person i love the countryside and prefer to drive to a nearby city for shopping in the large local fresh produce markets rather than boring same old shops in city shopping malls. Pea may i pls ask you if you could choose which of these places would you visit first? Boracay, Palawan & Porta Princessa, Coron & Island hopping, Cebu and its beaches, Bohol & Panglao, Siargao, Bantayan Island the beach and hotel you visited, Dumaguete, Valencia, Dauin, Davao? Where would you choose to visit bearing in mind i only have 30 days or 60 days with an extention to try and choose? I realise your time is very precious to you Pea making & researching all of your great videos but i will keep my fingers crossed that you will be kind to this foreigner as you are my No.1 lady in the Philippines that i value your honest opinion. Thank You kindly Pea in advance.😊😊❤
