@AugmentedActor4 жыл бұрын
If you tend to get cast as those types then I would definitely focus on those kinds of roles and maybe target your head shots and other marketing materials toward those types as well. Just remember that often scripts play around with unexpected types. Sometimes the Joker ends up being the hero. Sometimes the lover turns into the orphan. Watch my other video on discovering your character type for more info.

Wow! I love how you provided a plethora of examples. One problem I have with most people, when they describe archetypes, is that they'll give like two examples and I'm a very mentally complex person, so I get lost a lot, but the way you provide pictures, descriptions, and titles really helps to paint a better picture as to how each archetype works. Great video.

5:15 Lotso-Huggin bear from Toy Story 3 is a good example of this. He's a ruthless, tyrannical, dictator who has a very sad backstory about being abandoned at a rest stop and walking all the way home to find that he had been replaced. Not only that, but he was the only one of the 3 toys who were replaced, and he lied to Big Baby and Chuckles about all toys ending up on the same fate as him. He's probably the most well-written Pixar villain of all time, not just because of his manipulative ways, but how he can fake an heir to get what he wants in the end.

Thank you for the video, nice concise list. The types I can either strongly relate to, recognize in myself (present or past) and/or get described as by those who know me well: Sage, Innocent, explorer, lover, creator, rebel, a bit of the joker, Orphan/everyman. The rest like Ruler, magician, hero and caregiver not as strongly (outside the realm of imagination and fantasy that is, because in that i can be anything :) ). The only exception to all that is I have often enjoyed physicality/sports and I do have at least some athletic capacity.

In video games, I usually enjoy being the warrior-type. In both sci-fi and fantasy settings. But in real life, I tend to be more on the creative side. Especially since I’m currently editing a book I just finished recently called “The Road Ranger.” The story is about a former army ranger coming home after six years of fighting outside of his country’s borders. However after just one day, his mother is assassinated right outside of court and when the police won’t look into his dilemma, he decides to go off the rails by finding the suspect himself. And as you can imagine, there are certain action events that can get quite violent. There are three main characters that are not only relevant to the story but eventually come together to form a power trio. The characters in question are Matt Santos/The Road Ranger, Agent Maria Garcia, and Teenage Techie Miz. Matt Santos (a.k.a. The Road Ranger) is the brawn/muscle of the trio. Although he’s not a meathead by any means, he tends to excel in combat due to his experience in the army rangers. The reason why he earned the name “The Road Ranger” is because of his killing spree of criminals along with his military-style full-body combat outfit as well as the weapons he carries which normally consist of an M4 Carbine, a Glock 17 Pistol, and an M67 Frag Grenade. His talent for combat is both a strength and a weakness for him. By that I mean towards his enemies (which are usually criminals of the murderous kind), he is incredibly unforgiving. In his eyes, evil should be punished severely. Whether it be by death or by injury. In short, he believes the murderers should die and the thieves should be crippled. Maria Garcia is without a doubt the beauty of the trio. At first she becomes a romantic interest for Matt Santos as he brought flowers for her in court early in the story but eventually becomes sympathetic to Matt’s tragedy that he suffered, temporarily becomes an antagonist, but comes around to becoming an ally once she finds out that her superiors in the FBI were corrupt to the core. Due to her training in the FBI, she displays a fair balance of brawn and brains but she does not necessarily excel in either fields. She is eventually seen wearing a desert operator tactical outfit which is a sleeveless and lightweight version of Matt’s combat outfit. Besides this, she usually rocks a Glock 19 as her preferred weapon but does know how to use other guns in line with her FBI training. In addition to this, she prefers to use words over weapon but she does not shy away from using her weapon when the situation becomes hairy. In most cases however, she’s more forgiving than Matt towards terrible people but that can sometimes bite her back. Finally you have Miz. The teenage techie of the power trio. Because of his age, he’s not exactly combat-oriented like Matt and Maria are. However he is useful to them in other ways: As his title suggests, he is talented with technological gadgets by either restoring them or tinkering with them to make something new. He has even dabbled in robotics. His specialty is with computers but has also modified a cargo van to run on solar power and battery backup which he considers to be his magnum opus. His backstory is he was kicked out of high school at ninth grade for exposing a fraud ring in his school’s administration. And from this, he tried to make a living by posing as a computer technician but was caught by the FBI when they found out how old he was. Instead of going to jail for career fraud, he was given a commute sentence by working as a cybercrime technician specialist. Which was also how he met Maria since she was the one who convinced her superiors to lighten his sentence. Besides being incredibly intelligent for his age, Miz is also a little bit eccentric at times even to the point of joking around at inappropriate moments. All-in-all however, he is treasured by both Matt and Maria. Though more so by Maria since she knew him for longer than Matt. He’s also the least likely to kill someone because again, he’s not combat-oriented like Matt and Maria are. Even though he is more than capable of designing or repairing weapons that are actually made to kill. Sorry for this long comment but besides all this that I said, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video of going over certain character archetypes. As you can see, I’ve made my fictional characters a mix of certain archetypes which I think would make for great character development.

Can explorer types be reserved? Not wanting to be tied down, but not exactly out looking for a new adventure to throw themselves into?
@AugmentedActor2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Often characters fight against their true nature or they haven’t yet discovered themselves. Most explorers, heroes and adventurers start out in mundane environments or have to overcome fears and get propelled into an adventure against their will. And rebels often start out by playing by the rules. It’s always much more interesting to see a character become the archetype as the story progresses or see them struggle to become their type.

Can you have a character overlapping different archetypes or is that bad writing?
@AugmentedActor2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. It actually makes for more interesting writing. In fact I’d say that everyone has a blend of all the different archetypes I’m their personality but tend to express one or two more strongly. And as a ploy progresses they might grow or change their dominant type. It’s kind of like a tarot deck. The deck represents the human condition and spirit but each card represents one aspect that’s currently being expressed. For writing it’s helpful to at least go with a certain focus but blending is what makes for truly complex and interesting characters.

What is the difference between innocent and orphan types?
@AugmentedActor4 жыл бұрын
An innocent generally has an optimistic and naive attitude toward life. They are positive and not generally tainted by the hardships of life. Whereas an orphan has been stung by life early on and faced hardships. They will tend to have a harsher outlook on life and are more able to take care of themselves. An orphan will have street smarts, an innocent will not have any idea how to respond to the streets. Also, obviously, orphans are usually forgotten, overlooked, abandoned or abused. Innocents haven't experienced any significant hardships in life. Either can be a child or adult. Interestingly, the character of Little Orphan Annie could be both an orphan (she's street smart) but also an innocent (she has a very optimistic attitude).

I think that’s pretty normal. People are complex and most have aspects of all of these archetypes inside us to some degree. The expression of different archetypes at any given time (and their shadow aspects as well) make us all unique. When creating characters for a story, that’s when it’s easiest to focus on one main type but mixing them up adds depth to a character. And people also change from situation to situation which roles they most express.

"Academic" is obviously an adjectival form that was lazily sundered from the modified noun by unthinking speakers and writers. Thus, to use it as a noun is to multiply the scope of the mistaking. This is fantastic! But I wish there were more examples of non-white characters who fit these archetypes.

Thanks for your comment. I tried to include some representation of characters played by people of color in the video, but perhaps I needed to balance it a bit more. Next time I put together a video of this nature, I will be more cognizant of that. Thanks for the feedback.

Everyone has a mix of all the types. Some stronger than others or manifesting at different points in our lives. So it’s normal to feel more than one type. However good characters often express one or two types very strongly.

That's right! And the cards of the major arcana in tarot also represent archetypes as do astrology signs, etc. They are all useful systems for defining personality traits in slightly different ways.
