Good morning, Rachael, I discovered your videos just this morning, most enjoyable. I am delighted to know that there are people around the world who have a love of the Old England cottage tradition, and interior design. I am English born of Irish parentage. I live in an old Victorian school house beside a 12th Century church and Georgian Rectory in a rural village about 20 miles outside the city of Cambridge. We have restored our home with care over the past 12 years. We feel blessed living here in a small close knit community. There are no shops or public transport. with only one pub. The peace and quiet, especially in the summer season makes one feel as though they are on a permanent holiday, so much so that we are always reluctant to leave it for any length of time. We have purchased most of our antiques/vintage articles by trawling through yard ,barn , car boot sales and recclammation yards. There is an abundance of materials/artefacts still to be found out there. I am a keen collector of the Spode Italian Blue crockery. (housed on a dresser but which I use every day. We love everything old (not being so young ourselves)! Your home is beautiful , thank you for sharing it, and very true to the English traditions. By watching your video today I realise It would be quite possible, even for me, to have a bash at making a lampshade! I would, as an observation, not a criticism , point out that, especially in Victorian England, the colours of Blue and Green were never used in the same project, design. The adage was. " Blue and Green should never be seen except upon a Gypsy Queen". However, I understand this was due more to the English/Irish divide as opposed to any design faux pas!🤗. I look forward to watching more videos. Keep up the good work.

Good evening & welcome to the Stone Cottage Home family, Miss Kate! We are tickled to have you along, and especially to share a love for the old English country style with you! Yes, there is an abundance of wonderful old things out there. Like you, I love old things best. Your home and surrounding village sounds like an absolute dream that I wish I could see! Thank you for the kind compliments of our home. Coming from a lady who knows the English country style first hand, this is a high compliment. I had heard the saying "blue and green shall not be seen," but not the latter half of the saying. It's so interesting to know the history of this! Blue is my husband's favorite color, and green is one of mine ~ this is why you'll see a good bit of both in our home decor. You absolutely can make a pleated lampshade! I hope you give it a try! Thank you for visiting today, and have a lovely evening. 🌹

Good morning Miss Rachel. Some wonderful ideas here. I love to display plates on my walls. I used to have plants all through my previous home, my old cat never destroyed them, but I can't with my current 4 rescue cats🙄. I don't know how they get up so high but they do!! I've been collecting artworks of gardens and flowers as a compromise. I love the big cabinet in your entryway, that's given me an idea for my own. Thankyou for the time you take making these videos. I decorated my kitchen so as not to have anything electric in it except for the stove (the house is a 1910 sandstone bungalow although I dress 1850). I have a mudroom off the kitchen and that's where I have the fridge and toaster. I have glass canning jars from all the generations going back to my great Gma born in 1880. I keep my pastas, flour, sugar, etc in those. A family crocheted doily with an oil lamp. Hand embroidered dish towels and cook books. And I can only DREAM about that wall clock I'd also LOVE to have in my kitchen!! I use 1960's string glasses for my wooden spoons and birch (?) whisk. Have you ever seen the little "brooms" (but without the handle) where you pull off one of the "sticks" to test cakes? They're really cute. I LOVE your channel and ideas.

Such wonderful ideas Rachel! Now here's a thought. Every time you show another picture of a room, there's that rustic stone wall in between them. Then I see you standing in front of your fireplace wall. Have you thought about doing the German smear on your fireplace wall and create that stone wall you use throughout the picture showing? Just a thought. Yes, curtains transform a home. I bought these beautiful green curtains that look velvet bc I have been craving color and wow what a difference that made. Then I added green and yellow pillows and throws with decor to coordinate. Such a difference! Curtains bring a softness and elegance to a room even the simplest of curtains. Have a blessed day!
@StoneCottageHome

Great idea, I would love it if that wall were stone!! We've looked into doing a German schmear and various limewashing techniques, but in the end, we decided that the rich red brick color is one of the greatest cozy factors in the room. But we have come up with a way to tone it down, so stay tuned! I've also been gathering fabric samples for curtains and had one I really like come in yesterday... it's such fun to watch a room unfold! You have a blessed day, too!

Love the umbrella stand. I found a copper one at my thrift store, with a brass handle and edge. I love it with the canes and umbrellas. And you can change out the umbrellas seasonally with pastels in the spring.. brown, rusts and moss greens for fall... and of course red plaid and blacks for winter. And I agree with others that a german schmear on your brick wall would totally soften it and give it that old world feel. I know some book shelves are coming on that wall with a possible new mantel. Can't wait to see your vision .
@StoneCottageHome
@StoneCottageHome Жыл бұрын
Good afternoon, Miss Liane! Your copper umbrella stand sound lovely! And it sounds like you're making the most of it with your seasonal umbrellas. After considering the German Schmear and lime-washing techniques we decided to keep the brick as is. We both love the cozy, traditional feeling it gives. We do have the new bookcases in place and are really enjoying the updated look (and how the bookcases tone down the brick beautifully). We finished the DIY projects and filming so stay tuned for phase two of the living room!

Hi Rachel. So many beautiful things and photos. I love your pig cutting board. I have two friends who love pigs so I now notice all things pig LOL. Rachel, have you ever thought of doing the German Schmear technique to your red brick to make it blend more with the walls? Your home is lovely!
@StoneCottageHome
@StoneCottageHome Жыл бұрын
Good morning, Miss Irene! Yes, we looked into doing a German schmear and various limewashing techniques, but decided to keep the traditional red brick as is. It is one of the biggest "cozy factors" in the room, so we've come up with other ways of toning it down. Actually, we just finished phase two DIY projects and filming in the living room, and I'm hoping if I get the chance to make the video, we can share it in the few weeks! Thank you for the kind words, and have a blessed weekend!

I just love your videos. Also it has given me some very good ideas for hanging plates. We have textured walls so I don’t think wallpaper would stick well to them. What are your thoughts, Rachel.
@StoneCottageHome
@StoneCottageHome Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Miss Brigid! We had textured walls in our guest bedroom and we just smoothed then out before hanging wall paper. Where there's a will there's a way! P.S. We also had a heavily textured wall in the dining room behind the hutch and after smoothing that out we've wallpapered in there as well (stay tuned for the makeover)! Wallpaper is absolutely wonderful and totally worth the extra effort to hang. Also, if you're looking for lots of quality designs you might check out Wallpaperdirect.com (they send samples as well). Let me know what you decide!

Rachel- minute marker 4:12- I had to pause your video and check my wall clock to compare; it's the same one. Although it's more than 75 years old now, I guess there's at least one more just like mine. I'd be interested in knowing where you found the photo. All the best in your endeavors!😊

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Now I have another question for you, my children decided I needed a bigger TV over my mantle, so they wall-mounted it flat. It’s a suggestion. I have about 6 inches between the mantle and the bottom of the TV. The receptacle, the lovely wires and cords, and a power strip, or all sitting on my Mantle what can I possibly do to cover this without making it look like I’m trying to cover it. I thought about a board with a siding on it. I thought about a board and drilling a few holes and sticking some lovely flowers across it. I need help and I know you can figure that out for me. Thank you so much I’ll be.waiting

Hello,I always enjoy your videos. I know you touched on draperies. However, I would love more info, please! At the moment, I'm working on transforming a pair of plain wood bookcases into cabinets with vintage windows I purchased from a local estate sale. These cabinets will look more like built-ins around the main window of my living room. (And the cabinets make me so happy. Even unfinished they make the room feel clean and cozy! I just love them.) I plan to use floor-length drapes, but I am having such a hard time deciding what color, floral, or plain flabric. Do I want them to only decorativly flank the window or actually be functional. Also, logic tells me I need to have the foundation pieces in place first. Such as the couch. Which I have not found one I like just yet. I'm feeling anxious and a bit overwhelmed. So, any advice or (a whole video) on draperies would be fun and educational. Thank you for sharing. Oh and I love that little lamp!

Good afternoon, Miss Lydia! You have quite a project on your hands and your vision sounds fabulous! Thanks for the idea about a video on drapes... but I'm still in the learning phase myself and it sounds like you and I are in exactly the same place with choosing color/pattern for drapes in our newly made-over spaces! You are completely right about have the primary pieces in place first as they will have an impact on the feeling of the entire room. Two other thoughts I have are: first, actively order samples online for any colors/patterns that are a possibility for the area. I've ordered from FABRICGURU.com, and WALLPAPERDIRECT.com. I've heard it's good for balance to have a large-scale, medium-scale, and small-scale. Also, a flowing floral, a geometric, and a stripe, or dot. Second, it really is a good idea to make one design change in a room at a time and let it "settle". This is what we did with the living room. We did everything you saw and then let it settle for a few weeks to see how it felt, and what we missed etc. I hope this helps! Let me know what you decide! Blessings, Rachel
