A lot of the villagers do have plans they drop to marry you, but if you really think about it, Haley and Leah don't. They're not 'trapped' by the marriage, as Leah just wants to her art in the valley anyways, and Haley actually grows into the role of housewife/mother as she becomes them, and can still do her photography. For most of them, yeah, but I think those two actually benefit from the marriage.

Harvey also benefits from the marriage as his career as the town doctor is unaffected while he gains companionship, love and a better lifestyle. You can argue the same for Elliot as his writing career continues post marriage as well. Emily’s plans also remain unaffected by marriage, she keeps her job at the Saloon and continues her hobbies as well (though she wasn’t originally a marriage candidate so this makes total sense). Shane didn’t really have any plans before you marry him, so marrying him does kind of “fix” him in a way (I can still never bring myself to do it, he’s just not my type though I like him fine as a friend). It’s unclear if Abigail’s plans are affected by marriage as she just talks about wanting to go on an adventure and she shows interest in swords, which she uses in her post-marriage event. Maru keeps her job at the clinic and also continues to work on her gadgets, maybe marrying her keeps her from reaching her full potential as a scientist/inventor but she already proved herself with the robot she makes before she gets married. Penny keeps her job as a tutor for Jas and Vincent, and she never had any bigger dreams than that career-wise. We get to give her a nice home and a garden as well as space from her mother. So it’s really just Sam, Sebastian and Alex whose plans change if you marry them (though I think it’s the worst for Alex because he wanted to be a professional athlete, at least Sam continues to make music even if it’s in a different genre and Sebastian continues his programming work and even goes into game development, claiming that our farming income helps him follow his passion and that living with us is good for him…he kind of gives up the idea of moving to the city even before you marry him and he mentions after marriage that the city wouldn’t have been a good fit for him anyway).

@@ZehraShafqat I agree with most of that, those were just the two that popped in my head first, and glaringly were not negatively affected by marriage. I think it could be argued that Maru would end up differently if she just went off to school/became a full time scientist before getting married, so I'd say she's in the gray area. Elliot can be Elliot any way he wants, but let's be fair, Elliot just kind of sucks, so.... :p I skipped Emily because it's not that marriage doesn't affect her, it's that nothing really affects her (like you said, not originally going to be a marriage candidate, so she seems to function more like the other people you can't marry). Shane is kind of like Emily, and if anything, he seems to leave off on a better place if you don't marry him. Before marriage, but after 8 heart events, he's trying to change his life, recover, etc. After marriage, he feels like he slips a little, and while better than he was at the start of the game, he feels like he gets comfortable with only partially recovering and living in between states. Penny should've been in my list originally, because she is the most 'wants to be a wife and have a large family' of the people you can marry, so settling down, having kids, IS her plan XD. Abigail basically wants 'adventure' in her life, which would 'probably' be better suited to actually going off and 'adventuring' than just kind of checking out the woods around the area or the cave. I'd say it's kind of a toned down rather than trapped for her. I think overall, it's not just about if they wanted to 'leave' or not, it's more about if they had solid plans in mind, and where/what those might be. Leah for example wants to make art, and do it in Stardew Valley because that's what inspired her, so getting married, having a family doesn't actually change anything. She's essentially you're neighbor, so even moving onto the farm isn't really 'moving', and before even dating, she's learning to sell/present her art, and the most her dream 'changes' might be to make the valley an art destination, so all good. Haley on the other hand, has her plans 'change', but not in a negative or impactful way that marriage goes against it. She doesn't like living in the valley, only interacts with like 3 people, and has problems with doing anything all that constructive and her sister. Before marriage happens, but over her heart events, she learns to start doing chores, learns how to start thanking people for helping them, starts to enjoy nature, and comes to appreciate the small town feel. So she goes from 'wanting to leave this small nothing town' to 'wanting to be a part of the close knit community'. She enjoys animals, getting dirty, and her photography. After marriage, she talks about how she enjoys doing chores and never thought she would, enjoys being a mother if you have children with her, and her relationship with her sister improves, so much to the point that she worries that Emily might be lonely living on her own, and even goes during her schedule sometimes to her old home to spend time with her. He other heart events, past 8, also show she get involved in the community by helping raise money for books to help Penny and the kids, all of her own doing, with no one else influencing her, meaning she actually wants to be part of the town and make life better. that's just why they 'stood out' to me I guess. Haley having one of the larger kind of story arcs to her, has always made her someone I liked romancing in the game, and is one of the few of them that might actually improve not just from 0-8 hearts in general, but also continues to improve through the dating and marriage stages of the relationship, and it mostly feels like her doing, not the players.

Maybe this is going too deep but I feel like everyone has to give up some dreams or aspirations when getting married and choosing to do so is showing that you're willing to leave those things behind for a closer life with your significant other. So in a way I don't think it's a "dark" part of stardew valley but just something that reflects real life in a way.

The story behind the dwarves sounds a lot like the dwarves' story in Skyrim (the Dwemer basically tricked the Snow Elves into becoming the Falmer)

one of the things i have always loved about Stardew Valley is that it looks like an ultra-cute and super cozy game on the exterior. And it can be if you want to play it that way. however, if you dive deep in to the game and really get to know all the NPCs and the ins and outs of Stardew Valley, it actually does contain some extremely dark themes, topics, and story lines i.e. alcoholism to suicidal thoughts and feelings as well as feelings of hopelessness. i personally find Stardew Valley to be one of the more realistic, thought-provoking games out there. That darkness is part of the game's charm but i am often a bit surprised that the game is rated "E" for everyone lol. What does a child ask their parents after experiencing the cliff cutscene with Shane, for example? or about Alex's parents? or about Clint's crippling depression? No wonder the official merch store contains a death-metal Stardew t-shirt. i have that shirt! i am a huge fan of extreme metal music and when i saw it, i had to buy it. 😂 anyway, Stardew Valley is not all bright, cute, and pretty. it is definitely those things but it is so much more as well. Love your channel! been watching for a little over a year now. Keep up the amazing work. 😎

The Wizard having an affair and a daughter in town has quite a few candidates actually. Abigale is the obvious first choice. She has purple hair just like the Wizard does, and she says she doesn't even need to dye it anymore. It use to be a different color. Caroline hanging out with the wizard also is a strong hint. But Abigale isn't the only girl around with purple hair. Jas also has purple hair, and is Marnie's niece. Or is she? There is a photo of a younger Marnie with a baby. Possibly Marnie had an affair and claimed Jas was a niece? You never hear anything about Jas' parents or why she is living with Marnie. Like Ezlilyy said, Caroline could also be the Wizards daughter. Green hair is unusual, and the purple could of skipped a generation. Then there is Emily. Emily has blue hair. Emily has a perchance for the mystical. Emily doesn't look much like her sister. We haven't seen Emily's parents who are on a permanent vacation. Maybe the witch got to them? Which explains why they never return? There is also the possibility that Penny is the Wizard's daughter. Pam isn't very forthcoming about who the father is. All we really know is Penny's father isn't part of her life.

about Jas's hair colors. don't forgot that Shane is Marnie nephew too , if they has blood related that's might be genes. Jas's dialog claim that Shene was a good friend with her parents before they're passed away. I assume that one of her parent might be Shane's sibling or cousin as well.

fact : rabbit foot now is not actually use their foot but it's a cluster of fur that they're shed . So it no harm to rabbit anymore , since it's use as a lucky charm so everyone love them except Penny for some reason. I think she might thought that it was animal abused ( I mean she might read the out-date information ) or allergic of animal fur or she just don't believe in the myth since she reading a lot of book. oh also the rabbit foot is related to witchcraft and dark art. that's may a reason enough that someone don't like it.

Penny still teaches the kids Harvey Emily and Maru still have their jobs Elliott goes away for his book. Sam has his music go on a tv show Sebastian says how happy he is on the farm and so does Haylee The only life you ruin by date and marrying them is shane.

Concerning rabbits. You said it yourself: Wizard is involved with a LOT of dark undercurrents of Stardew Valley. So, maybe, the Wizard once created this magical rabbit breed, Stardew Rabbits, which grow and shed their legs like lizards can do with tails? Maybe his wife loved rabbit feet but he was to compassionate to murder a little fluffy friend for a foot, so he created this kind!

The thing about Pierre trying to sell your produce for much more than he paid you...well, isn't that how stores usually work? Not usually that much of a markup, but sometimes. It's not like he tried to take credit for growing it. I don't see what's to be mad at, especially since nobody fell for his ridiculous price hike and he wasn't blaming us for the price rise. Hopefully you didn't sell him valuable crops so that you took a loss, otherwise...shrug. As to his secret stash, at the time I went through the cutscene, for some reason, I didn't take it as anything particularly shocking. For all we know it was playboy magazines, or calimari, or unpaid bills. Or photos from a private detective following Abby and Caroline. :p As for marriage ruining Sebastian because he wants to move to the big city...in the 10 heart cutscene he says he isn't interested in the city anymore, like he's really soured on the idea. It's hard to find frogs in the city. heh So I wouldn't feel too guilty if you marry him. Just give him a table for his computer, a bigger table for his DnD game and an ashtray...and he's good to go. ;)

I think Jas might be Marnie's daughter with the mayor. There's a photo of young Marnie with Jas obtained from secret notes but when you give it to her, she act like she didn't know anything about it. Also, Marnie looks way too young to be a grandmother since Shane is her nephew.

Depends on the person. Marrying Penny gives her exactly what she wants: Love, a new big home, kids. Marrying Leah doesn't get in the way of her art, she keeps at it. Emily's happy...well, probably no matter what. I don't usually marry her (see also: Penny and Leah), but I assume she stops working at the saloon? That would be sad, she seems to like it there. Also, marriage shouldn't get in the way of Elliot or Harvey's aspirations. Haley...seems fine being married, though she doesn't strike me as the maternal sort. And Shane... I don't know, never cared to wonder if he's missing out on anything. But tying the rest down feels wrong, yes. They're kids, they should be exploring single life for a while.
