We just bought the bush hog version of this mower at work.. “TDC-1200” the minimum rating is for a 40hp and under and I mowed 8 hours straight on Friday with a 2038r no problem at all at roughly 5mph.. the field I mowed was 12” high and thick.. mowed it down to 2” high in one pass with no clumping .. I was blown away!

I had the 12' Frontier version behind a JD5220. I cut roughly 15 acres weekly. I had either the 12' batwing or a 72" zero turn. Time wise it was about the same. We have trees so I couldn't get between several of them and had to get out the zero turn anyway. The only advantage to the tractor/batwing was it was smoother and more comfortable. I have since sold it and stuck with the zero turn. In short, 12' at 5 mph vs 6' at 10 mph. The blade tip speed of the 12' was slower than the zero turn so it couldn't go any faster than about 5mph and leave a good cut..

One big catch: the lead time on orders right now is ONE YEAR! The dealer said Woods usually quotes worst-case basis, so maybe I'll get it a little earlier in next year's mowing season! I figured the batwing will be ideal for the airstrip - long, straight passes with zero obstructions and 4 rounds and I'm done! :)

He decided to stay with the rotary cutter and declined to take delivery of the TBW12.20, so yesterday the dealer offered it to me! That cut nine months off my wait time! The airstrip's grass is barely high enough to cut and growing season is over but at least I can try it out once before winter. Of course, the best part is that it'll be all ready to go when that fescue starts jumping in the spring!

I mow with a 10 foot Lastec 621ER behind my TC34DA. Their is nothing more satisfying than cutting your first pass with a large finish mower. The Lastec is 3pt mounted so the control is a little better than a pull behind. Cutting time is a little better than a zero turn but the main advantage is being able to go slower. The ride is much smoother with the slower tractor versus the high speed on the ZT. I like comfort these days versus having my teeth knocked loose cutting at 8mph on a ZT.

Hi, For a few green seasons up in Michigan, I used to run a john deere 4720 with a 15 foot version in a city parks department. Loved using it. One draw back to it was not being able to see too well if any vehicle(s) were passing by before changing lanes to making a left hand turn. The tractor itself was an open operator station with canopy.
@jdfleetguy282 жыл бұрын
One other tip I wanted to share is you may want to lock your 3pt in the all the way up position. Mine settled or I bumped the lever or something had caused my hitch drop into low mid position and turning sharp like you were doing with yours, allowed my PTO shaft to come onto contact with my I-match. That will ruin your day , sheered my PTO shaft clean off . $300 and two weeks later I had repaired and going again. Woods said August which was going to be a 4 month wait and cost about a $1000.

I've run a 18' (3-72" decks) when I was cutting commercially. Draw bar was 2-3 feet longer as well. Biggest draw back to finish bat wings, especially in a commercial setting is having to remove all the blades at least once a week, sharpen and balance them all and reinstall unlike a traditional bat wing where you can just sharpen the blades on the deck with a grinder. They might have changed a good bit from the last time I ran one about 16 years ago is the crazy amount of grease points. Doesn't look like you have any dips or holes except around your pond but do watch those. We would have guys bending and/or breaking a deck spindle at least once a week do to fairly rough graded land. With around 2,500 acres of land (about half of what the military installation actually has) to manicure on a monthly basis, those machines definitely got a work out. Also on a side note, weed eat around obstacles before mowing. It'll make it a lot easier than trying to get up super close and possibly causing damage to the equipment.

This is a great episode, Tim. Thanks. It seems the 3039R is a great match for the TRW12.20 for typical mowing. And, like in the case of this video, can still handle things when the grass gets a little out of control (just slowing down). With a 2038R having nearly the same power states as the 3039R, do you feel it would have similar results? Do you believe (question goes to anyone else reading this as well), the 2038R would have preformed about the same. I'd like to mow with a lighter tractor on the lawn.
@TractorTimewithTim Жыл бұрын
This is a 3046R. I run it now with an older 3720 ...and it doesn't have quite enough umph overall. Of course, this is with cab and A/C. Turning off the A/C makes a noticeable difference. Anyway, a 3039R would have a couple more HP than the 3720, so it might be acceptable. I have not tried the 2038R. I should do so...but I suspect it will be a bit lacking.

Love the video, really enjoyed seeing a batwing finish mower on the channel. I mow 8-10 acres weekly with my woods / Frontier 17ft. I am sure probably saw it on GTT. I pull it with either my 5115M or 4066R . I can mow 5-7mph . I did fight the clumping a lot last year , so ordered the mulching kit from woods late last season didn’t receive it till mowing season was over. Deere did offer mulching blades for it, which only made the cut and clumping worse. Hopefully adding the rest of the mulch kit which I had to order that from woods since Deere didn’t offer the whole kit. Anxious to try the new mulching kit out this season . If you decide to add a mulch kit to yours, you may want to go ahead and get yourself that cab 4066R, mulch kits generally do need more power to keep from choking or stalling the tractor.

If combined with a trim mower for trimming, it cuts the mowing time substantially at least for me it does. I am mowing 8-10 acres weekly with a 17ft frontier / woods batwing fish mower very similar to Tim’s. I trim and mow my ditch’s with my X758 and it’s 54” mid mount mower. All in most weeks 2-3hrs gets it all done. I have tried multiple different mower combinations over the past several years From top of line Z9 diesel 72” Deere zero turn , cab 3Rs with 72” mmm decks, X7s. My current combo makes it truly enjoyable, and cut the time needed in half or more depending on the prior combo’s I was comparing it too. I truly hate a zero turn , for multiple reasons, especially the reason Tim points out, zero turns just cover me in grass, you can improve it some getting rid of the side shoot and installing a mulch kit, but I constantly was getting my z9 stuck. Which is why I have a 4wd X758 now with mulch kit, pretty clean setup for open station, and no issues with getting stuck in the ditch or around the pond.

Since you have run this a while now, can you offer comment on speed and job time compare to zero turn. How wide is cut on your zero turn? Thanks!
@TractorTimewithTim5 ай бұрын
I don't have a big enough tractor to fully compare that. I LOVE running this mower, but I have to go quite slow due to not quite enough HP. I am down near 2.0 mph with my CAB 3520 (which I prefer due to A/C). I can run 3.5 or so with the 3046R. Really need 40-50 PTO hp to handle this machine at high speed. I prefer this mower to a zero turn for the large areas of the yard because the ride quality is so much better, I can stay 'cool', and the grass isn't blown up into my face. However, there is NO QUESTION that the Ferris ISX3300 we are demoing right now (72 inch deck) can mow the yard faster. This Ferris has a Curtis Air Conditioned cab. In addition to staying cool and reducing dust, it improves the ride. I can run that machine full speed in the large areas of the lawn and remain comfortable! Lots of rambling, sorry. If/when I get a slightly larger hydrostatic tractor, I think the 12 ft mower will be competitive with the 72" ZTR, and MUCH more pleasant (fun) to operate. If you are ONLY about speed, ZTR with good suspension and power (this ISX3300 has 40HP), you will be able to get a LOT done. Oh, one more thing. This woods mower has incredible cut quality. High tip speed on the blades, good 'lift'. Very nice mower. Hope that all helps!

Each wheel has spacers. Put the appropriate number ‘below’ the collar on each gauge wheel. Oh yea. You have the tractor for this! Too bad you traded the cab :-)

Would you let me know what hp the tractor is and what kind of grass are you cutting? Thank you 👋👍😀

45 engine HP, 37 PTO HP. I think it is a bluegrass, or maybe some ryegrass mixed in. Not sure.

In my opinion it beats the zero turn , mainly because it's a wider path of cut for a much fast cut , reduce time and fuel use ....... good video

Because of the rear discharge design of the decks and not being able to create the lift of a zero turn deck I would try using mulching blades if they're available to knock down on clumping since you dont need the lift created by standard blades
