To celebrate Deaf Awareness Week, we have created a new video which teaches you how to sign a range of fun and friendly British Sign Language (BSL) phrases.
For many people in the deaf community, BSL is the only way they can communicate with others. By watching this video, we hope that the next time you meet someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, you are able to start a conversation!

Bsl interpreter here! This video is not bsl this is SSE ( sighn supported English) if you signed this to an actual deaf adult he wouldn't understand what your saying. Bsl order Is nothing like English, you say name you what? For what's your name. And weekend good? For how was your weekend, the whole language is backwards and doesn't have, and, Is, because, have, with in it. It's better if u actually want to learn to look up a level 1 bsl course near you and learn the propper way

That's SSE, not BSL. 'What's your favourite food?' for example would be signed as your-food-favourite-what?

Charles Sloan SSE means Support Spoken English with the right order of English like What is your name? But in BSL your name what?

Yeah, SSE uses spoken English sentence structures, but BSL mostly uses ‘time-frame, topic, action/comment’

I know this comment was ages ago, but can anyone tell me whether SSE or BSL is used more?

@@dolphindiva99 It depends on the situation. Typically, people that are hearing but may have speech or cognitive disorders prefer SSE, or people who are HOH (hard of hearing people) who may have grown up hearing or speaking (Spoken) English will often use SSE, as the Spoken English grammar is already something they're familiar with. BSL uses different grammar and shorthand (as far as sign slang goes etc.), whereas SSE follows Spoken English very closely, usually only supplementing with signs. I hope this helps! :)

Im not deaf... I just have severe social anxiety... and would rather say I'm mute but know bsl to get out of conversations where I actually have to... Talk. And hey! It will also be super helpful to be able to communicate with mute or deaf people! I know pretending I'm mute is probably really disrespectful and disgusting and dishonest... But it's better than having a påñic attack whenever I have to talk to someone, even something as small as asking for paper. And on top of social anxiety, I grew up in America and live in Wales and so I have an accent that draws in more people than I wish to disappoint so if I can hide that part about me, hopefully it will be better and that wont be my only worth

This is misleading, and, to an extent, insulting. SSE and BSL might use some of the same and other similar signs, but the two are not the same. Passing this off as BSL isn't right. BSL is a language that stands on its own. SSE is merely there to aid those who have communication or learning difficulties, as well as those who have grown up hearing and have either gone deaf or become hard of hearing later in life or through an accident. BSL is used by Deaf people of the Deaf community, though others do use it, such as the previously stated people who need other means of communication, but the syntext is completely different. BSL uses its own grammar and word order, as English does, but they do not compare - they're entirely different. If you're going to put something like this out there and claim it's to spread awareness and support a community of people, especially a minority, then you really should make sure you're getting the facts straight and presenting it as it should be.

What you're implying is that if you become deaf later in life or if you have hearing families, you're not really deaf. At list that's how it comes of as.

@candice_ecidnac
@candice_ecidnac 5 жыл бұрын
Signing quickly is not a requirement. Many deaf people are relieved/pleased to find out someone hearing can communicate with them. You can always sign to them "sign slow please" so you can pick it up. And when you're learning on KZbin, you can click the cog icon at the bottom right of videos and change the speed of the video to play as slowly as you need it to.

What a rip off! This is ovs SSE, do not try and say it's Bsl because bsl is not anything like English, I don't understand why they need to lie and say it is bsl when it isn't to fool people into believing that this is how deaf people talk it isnt at all. In real bsl they don't do discription words like _ have, with, and, because, do, they have their own way with facial expressions that comes across more than the sighn
