I had a Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge with a rifled barrel. Shot a deer once as the sun was setting with a Coppersolid 3 inch magnum slug. I literally saw daylight through him. Before that, I though seein daylight through a man was just a western movie expression. After that, I had a newfound respect for the 12 gauge slug. It dropped that buck like it was pole axed, and the buck weighed in at 185 pounds, field dressed. That's what I like. A nice clean harvest.

DITTO! You took the words right out of my mouth. A 12 ga. shotgun is an entire weapon system if you configure it correctly. You can have several different barrels (if your gun allows interchangeable barrels), many different chokes, and a multitude of different size and types of ammunition. You can use it on everything from squirrels to bears!
@notchagrandpa88755 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old video, but this is a great video that shows exactly why the 12ga is the ultimate in home defense weapons, if you load 5 to 9 slugs there's no gang of home invaders that wouldn't flee after the first one or two are dropped like a sack of potatoes, the 12ga slug is a serious man stopper, if you hit anywhere nearby center mass there's no way an invader could continue to threaten you or your loved ones. Only a 50cal. compares to the massive destruction of the 12ga slug.

@itis21827 жыл бұрын
I keep a full sized 18+1 round 9mm in my car. A Shotgun is ok for home defence but anything happening out in public is going to be more unpredictable. Could be close or far range, you could be sitting in your car or out of your car. I could be one or a group of assailants. You want to have something fast, small, low recoil, and that can be used at a wide range of distances. I chose 9mm because of the ammo capacity, the higher velocity, the more manageable recoil, and of course the cheap cost per round makes it easy to visit the range more frequently and become a great shot with you handgun. So I'd stick with a full sized 9 police and military around the world carry it for a reason.

I was not surprised with this slug remaining inside the gel block. I was at an autopsy of a guy that was shot from five feet with a 18" barrel length .12 gauge Winchester 2 3/4" lead Foster type slug. The deceased was in the middle of delivering a right handed punch when he was hit. The shot was 5" below left nipple and fired at about a 25 to 30 degree angle. The slug shredded the right side of the heart and came to rest in a almost "U" shape resting on the spinal column. The dead guy weighted about 250 LBS. and was tall and muscular. If that slug would have missed the spine I think it may have exited the body but with very little energy left. On the other hand it seems to me that if soft tissue is not struck the slug will penetrate multiple walls with no problem.

Buck shot isn't all that impressive to me, don't get me wrong 00 buck will do the job just fine, but ballistically this is amazing.

I wouldn't use it. It's great for self defense if you live in the country and your next door neighbor is about 50-100 yards away from you. Good shot placement didn't ruin any meat but absolutely dropped my deer. If you are hunting public land and a deer running off could end up on posted private land in almost any direction, it is really nice to know that a very accessible load like this will make for a fast and simple recovery. This was especially convenient since the area is heavily populated with coyotes and waiting to get permission to access private land could reduce the chances of harvesting any meat.

No, you have that backwards. It is the hollow rear and weight forward design of the foster slug that stabilizes it in flight, just like a shuttlecock. The rifling is there to allow the slug to go through tight chokes and decrease friction in the gun barrel.

Harry Kuheim I just watched that video, a couple of days ago. That man is a marksman!!! I would do good to shoot that group from 100 yards. I'm always impressed with his shooting, but that was crazy good...

@@jamiesloan5902 Yea Hickock is not normal. Normal shooters can shoot slugs 230 yards lol. Hell I would be jumping for joy if I hit 75 yards!

It was 290 yards, HICKOK45 shooting the slugs and hit every single shot I believe. Thats far af. And penetrated through the board and barrel he was shooting at.... Nuts

A little practice is all it takes, Remington sluggers is what I prefer.. 70-80 yds shots are impressively accurate, even 100 but they do start dropping pretty fast past 100 yds..1oz for 12ga & 1/2 oz for 20ga, all I use for hunting!

A slug will put an intruder down and leave quite a mess to clean up, but keep in mind those things travel a ways before they're done. 00 buck won't travel through three walls and risk hitting someone else you don't want to.

Actyaly shotgun slug had mutch less penetration than rifle in 308 or even AK .
@jarin12ga10 жыл бұрын
toniiii9 True!! but the 12ga slug will have a MUCH bigger wound cavity with the less penetration!!! These slug will make it to vitals in any game in north America!! Here in MA we can't use rifles and are very fond of the rifled slug for deer hunting. I've killed stock piles of deer with these same slugs!!

If the gel block was strapped down to stop that huge flex, the slug track might have stayed straighter. Great video. That's a scary projectile.

I don't think there is a land animal alive that could take a well-placed shot from one of these
@R_K_S24012 жыл бұрын
On thin-skinned animals I think it would be fine. The problem is that Foster style slugs are Hollow and are prone to fragmenting. Which retards penetration. Brennecke's style slugs are better for penetration

A few years back ; we developed a 12 gauge ball round ; that spins backwards at the same angular speed ' as the forward speed of the round. Inside contains a solid core of depleted uranium. The calculated energy is double of a standard slug round traveling at the same speed and same weight. Is only available to trusted friends of ours...
@RemFireball12 жыл бұрын
The slugs are front heavy for stabilization as they are not generally fired from rifled barrels, they self correct in flight like a badminton shuttlecock. Yeah turning it around would be interesting and if it connects with a soft target backside first then it will be extremely explosive with little penetration depth. But it will try to self correct in flight and by the time it hits the target it might be side on or even nose on to the target. A rifled barrel might fix that.

Shortly after entering on duty at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center I was asked if I would undertake a ballistics test with a variety of different ammunition. The center had constructed a 10 - 12” diameter stainless steel tube a out of stainless steel that was about 12 feet long mounted vertically with a cat walk around the out side at about the 8 foot level for the shooter. A number of different handgun rounds were tested, but the most interesting by far was the 12 gauge rifled slug. When the rifled slug was recovered I was stunned. The little star on the nose was undamaged, but the skirt from the hollow base had continued forward upon impact with the water, causing the recovered shape to be like a silver dollar with the diameter greater than one inch!

I used to live in a shotgun only area. I have a 12 gauge single shot H&R made in the 30's that I silver soldered a scope rail on the barrel(Older barrels are thick enough to do this). With Federal slugs I get one ragged hole at 50 yards with 3 shots. I did shoot a deer at about 75 yards once, and it hit where I aimed, but am sure the group opens up some at that distance. I have killed quite a few deer with it. Even hits in soft areas(Lungs) really do a job.
@killgora112 жыл бұрын
I get your meaning. Spread shot is ecellent in CQC, but look at it this way. In my house my kids live practically in the room across from me. With a single bullet or slug you don't have to worry about having multiple projectiles flying into that room. In all true perspective any type of ammo is good for home defense, just having multiple pieces of lead flying out gives you a bit of an advantage.
