it looks like the barrel on the 12ga is a good bit longer than on the 20 so it would generate more power . this comparison really should be made with all other things being equal though i dont know if its really that big a difference or not. I guess it depends on what loads you are using.

Hate to be that guy but a 12 gauge and a 20 gauge are just as powerful, the difference is that the 12 will throw more lead at the target. If you compare a number 6 load, 12 vs 20 they throw the shot the same velocity, its just that there is less of it in a 20 Choke also has a lot to play as well, Paul Harrell has a good video on 20 guages

Hey not trying to be argumentative, but its kind of annoying hearing this over and over. When a shooter says something is "more powerful", he is never referring to velocity alone. A larger payload and/or slug going the same velocity as a smaller payload and/or slug will always be more powerful. There will be more energy at the muzzle as well as the target(assuming same percentage hit). We don't say a 185 gr .45 slug going 900 FPS is just as powerful as a 230 GR .45 slug going 900 FPS. That would be ridiculous. The same goes for shot payload. A 1 OZ or 1-1/8 OZ shot load going 1300 FPS will ALWAYS be more powerful than 7/8 OZ shot going 1300 FPS. Velocity of shot alone is not what determines how "powerful" a load is.
