Shooting Foster style slugs (American Rifled Slugs) through different chokes out of my Beretta Xtrema II to see the difference in group sizes.
My friend over at The Magnum Channel did a very similar video as a follow up to this one. He used the same slugs at the same distance but shot his groups from a Mossberg 500 using only the bead sight. Here is a link to his video, check it out-- • Best choke for shotgun...

Slugs aren't the same as shot as we all know. Small amount of history from an old timer. Foster slugs were designed from the start to function in both choked and open choked guns. The hollow base will expand to the bore just like a Minie ball. The "rifling" was so the slug could swage down through the choke. For many years there was debate as to whether or not the rifling imparted spin, but Taofledermaus proved that it does provide some spin. Before Foster slugs we used "pumpkin balls" - round balls just like BP balls. These needed to be used in open choked guns. One guy I knew fired a pumpkin ball through his full choked gun, and he swore that after he quit rubbing his shoulder, his gun had become modified choke. Brenneke slugs state plainly that they should only be used in open choked guns, or at most IC choked guns. With rifled shotgun barrels, and interchangeable choke tubes there shouldn't ever be a problem. Thanks for this video. Good job.

Good call Dyl, Unless you are hunting in a area with very open cover a shotgun is just as good probably better. By far foster slugs have stopping power that most rifles can not match. The only thing more deadly is buckshot out to 50 or so yds. So If you are hunting in heavy cover use buckshot out to 50yds. use at least a modified choke full is even better. if you need a little extra distance use slugs.

I was always told that too when I was growing up. I think this comes from people lumping all slugs into one category. There are some slugs that should only be shot through a cylinder bore so the safe thing to tell people is that ALL slugs should only be shot through a cylinder bore.

@@matthewarmstrong935 It was a standard slug barrel for the gun, so I'm assuming it was just cylinder. It's a smooth bore too. Somehow it could hit pop cans at 100 yards dang near every shot when on a bench.

My 12 gauge Remington 870 SP slug gun has 20" rifle sighted barrel , and choke tubes. It was sold as a multi purpose gun for big game and turkeys. It came with a extended rifled tube for sabots, extended extra full tube for turkeys, and a cylinder tube for foster type slugs which is how I use it. The improved Foster type slugs are closer to the 12 gauge barrel diameter and are quite accurate. I have a Leupold 3x scope on a over receiver mount and it's my shotgun zone go to gun. Inside 70 yards it's devastating.

I did a similar experiment using a rifled barrel, a rifled choke and a modified choke all with 22"-24" barrels. The Carlson's rifled choke actually shot the best at 75 yards. The Mod choke shot a 3.5" group with Remington Slugger Foster Slugs, the rifled barrel shot a 4.25 group with Remington Slugger Foster Slugs and the Carlson's Rifled Choke shot a just under 3" group. I have Wilson Fire Select Vent Rib sights on my 22" barrel and the 24" rifled barrel had it's own sights dovetailed in the rear and a front post. Using Brenneke style slugs the rifled choke and the rifled barrel shot a similar group at about 3.5" at 75 yards, the mod choke shot a 4.5" group at the same distance.

You confirmed what I have been telling people for decades. I have been shooting foster slugs with my humpback Browning Auto 5 since I was a kid and have not damaged the barrel at all it still measures out at "FULL CHOKE," I shoot good consistent patterns and have never gotten any noticeable leading in the barrel. Over the decades I have fired hundreds of shells, the barrel is in good as new condition. Listen to Kirk Boswell what he says is 100% correct.

Another option for those who have the older browning shotguns that came with a parallel type choke. The parallel design was developed by the English a long time ago. In effect the bore is constricted down to whatever the standard call for to make say a modified or say full choke. At this point the last portion, and inch or so, not sure of the dimensions? of the barrel is now runs parallel. Was pleasantly surprised when I purchased a Browning BPS in 1981. I got it with a modified choke. Thought I was going to have to buy a slug barrel eventually for deer hunting. Was told to test it. I did and boy was I pleasantly surprised. That thing shot at the time Winchester and Federal fosters with rifle like accuracy. Using only a bead I could put 3 shot groups the size of a coffee mug at 120 yards, I later got the exact same setup for my brother. Same degree of accuracy. A few years later I picked up a Browning B2000 with a full choke. Again phenomenal accuracy. Talked to another person who had Browning shotguns of that same vintage and he said they shotguns like rifles, regardless of the choke on the barrels. This was the period before screws in chokes. I’ve blasted bucks out to 120 with my rig

Good video and I liked the choice of shotgun used because there are a lot of hunters out there that only own one shotgun and use it on everything from ducks to turkeys to deer. As far as I could tell, every one of those groups was a dead deer at 90 yards, and at around 50 yards (distance where most deer are killed) those would have been groups under 3". Plenty accurate.

Hey Buffalo - I came across a good shooting bench that was being used by a black powder shooter. He was sitting in a chair with an arm rest (I think it was a lawn chair) with the chair facing 90 degrees to the right. He sat in the chair and rested his left elbow on the arm of the chair and shot. His own weight stabilized the chair. FWIW

When you are shooting observe the front sight or have someone watch your muzzle for barrel flip. When your barrel recoils straight up the shot will be centered. Then the barrel flips too the left the shot goes to the left. Adjust your butt placement in your shoulder and your hold pressure until the barrel flips straight up. This will greatly improve your shooting. Review the video and see what i am talking about. When you put them in the bullseye the barrel doesnt flip to the left. It recoils straight back and up. Thankyou for the video. John Davis jax fl

I like your content Buffalo. I just stumbled on to your channel today looking for info on chokes. I just bought a Beretta A300 Outlander in max5 camo this past weekend and was wondering if I should get extended chokes for it. Just subbed to your channel, thank you for sharing your knowledge.

7:28. BULLSEYE! 👏 BTW I had good luck with a modified choke on an 870. Cloverleaf group, all touching at 50 yards. Only problem was the length of that 28" barrel.
