Considering that 76 percent of the Auckland to Wellington train route will be under electric wires (when the newest short section of wires is operational next year) it is a bit disappointing to have the entire Auckland/ Wellington passenger train route still powered by diesel. A modern dual-voltage hybrid passenger train type which is operated in Europe would be ideal in a narrow gauge version for the North Island route. The way at present to balance the fossil fuel transport guilt is 87 percent of the electric power in NZ (in 2022)(2023 could be similar) was from renewable sources, so in everyday life for home lighting, cooking, hot water, computer use, traffic lights, building lifts, elevators etc a higher proportion of electric power an individual uses in NZ can be renewable compared to if the individual lived in some other country.

NZ is definitely headed in a good direction, but I also read that NZ has one of the highest rates of per capita infrastructure costs in the developed world. I think having such a spread out rural population makes it hard to advance renewable transport technology faster. 💜
