12 Important Phrasal Verbs for Everyday English Conversation

Күн бұрын

I'm sharing some important phrasal verbs used in daily English conversation.
TRANSITIVE or INTRANSITIVE?
Phrasal Verbs that are transitive need an object. EG: (to) look up to (we need to always say WHO we look up to for this phrasal verb to make sense.)
If it's intransitive, it can be used on its own, without an object. EG: (to) grow up
SEPARABLE or INSEPARABLE?
Separable means that the verb and the particle are able to be separated in the sentence. EG: (to) bring up is separable.
I'm going to bring up this issue on Monday.
I'm going to bring this issue up on Monday.
We can separate the words in the phrasal verb so it's separable.
(to) jump in or (to) butt in on a conversation are examples are inseparable phrasal verbs. We can say "Can I jump in?" But we can't say "Can I jump me in".

Thanks for your informative lesson! 1. I’d like to bring the topic up today. It is “ climate change”. 2. I sometimes get the meaning across in English when I read English classic novels. 3. I am not kind of person who lets on anything somebody confide in. 4. Do you mind if I jump in here? 5. I don’t like any person who butts in my conversation. 6. I used to blurt out some news, which made my friend really annoyed. 7. When we have a date with a boring person, our conversation tend to dry up soon. 8. I tried to get through to my husband, but it was in vain. He might be away for a while. 9. I sometimes talk over what I plan to do. 10. I was trying to leave earlier, but he succeeded in talking me around. 11. I don’t like any one who shut me down mid-sentence. They are not a good listener. 12. I am a lucky person when my husband always back me up through tough times. Thanks for giving me some feedback, my English teacher.

Hi Emma! My name´s Alfredo and I am a teacher of English in Cuba. I must say I like very much your classes and I really enjoy them very much, but I must also say that lately, I´m seeing subtitles in your videos; sometimes in English, but other times in Spanish too, and I ask to myself, why? Your English is very understandable and I think most of your followers do not need those subtitles. Thank you and keep going. Alfredo from Cuba.

Hello Emma again! So overjoyed to see you 'n' also hear your pleasant soft voice as well! As far as I consider, and I've always thought so, phrasal verbs are essential and inevitable part of learning English 'cause almost all of them have several meanings what's expanding your vocabulary significantly and by this token, they let you to express your thoughts maximum exactly, maximum precisely. I actually know for about several thousand phrasal verbs, I've been learning them for a very-very long time and that's really awesome! I'm proud of myself, my persistence, my assertiveness in this. Thanks a million dear Emma for that you've been going on to teach us for a long time enough, I recommend your channel to all of my acquaintances 'n' friends who are learning a language like me. I'll see you in there :)

She proposed to increase the interest rate. I think it is a good suggestion; we have to bring it up at tomorrow's meeting. I mostly struggle to get across my feelings to others and it hurts me so much. Please, don't force me to say that. I'm not allowed to let on. I try to don't jump in when somebody is working carefully. I hate people when they try to butt in. It's really embarrassing. His grandfather always blurts his secrets out and he becomes really embarrassed. The worst thing that could happen for a spokesperson is to dry up. I've never become successful to get through my ideas to my parents. My father always wants to talk my problems over; he relishes that.

The victim seems suspicious as if there's somethink he doesn't let on. 3. I think Roy didn't want to offend you, he just blurt it out! 4. Our new student tourned out to be not an easy-going person, every time I tried to talk to her, the dialogue quickly dried up. 5. I was really upset to find out that my boyfriend cheated on me! But for my friend who backed me up, I would be a disaster.

My parents struggled with reaching out over WhatsApp at first, but now they can get across their messages such a degree that they don't even remember how to get through phone calls anymore.

Hello dear teachear from Buenos Aires Argentina. Thanks for your lesson, I m really studying a lot about these p adverbs. I looked up for some more and I m trying to put them into practice. Speak up, speak out on/against an issue, tune sn/smn out, fess up, talk down to, call sn out, point out, spell (information) out, cut sn off, rattle off, harp on (a topic), tell sn off, but out!, stand up for or stick up for sn, open up to sn, rant about smn. I have to study a lot! Thanks dear teacher 😘❤️💝💖

Akash, thank you for asking! Fortunately, I live in one of the worlds most isolated cities (I used to get frustrated by this but it turns out it's a huge benefit during a global pandemic!) We haven't had too many cases here, so I'm keeping well. How about you?
