I learned alot on my third time on my yak in Palos Verdes California I didn't know crap about Wind,Tides and man Poseidon forgave me felt like I was in a giant toilet and waves hitting me and got dragged by the water current past Flat Rock point and I was fishing Malaga Cove.. Man lesson learned. Good video wish I would see it around June when I got my Hobie Compass. I'm still learning thank for the video.

ALWAYS carry a spare paddle and spare PFD or throwable PFD if at all possible. You can vacuum seal some hooks/lures, even store a cuban yo yo below deck with some line on it so if things go wrong, you can still fish...

Great idea. How would you recommend attaching to the inside of the hull? I’m thinking you’d want to tether stuff in there so that it doesn’t shift and get wedged in an area of the hull that is difficult to access.

@werftv4580 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZacharyRiggs619 some 3M velcro strips, zip ties, some wire... any or all.. even wedging in with a foam block would work just fine.. but I definitely suggest spares of the essentials if you can spare the room

@@werftv4580 Those are some great ideas. I actually went and looked in the Kayak hull today. There are so many small curves and crevices to slip some stuff into. Great tip!!!

@@ZacharyRiggs619 twice back when I was a Kayaker, I had to help others who were just totally lost. one guy, I gave a paddle to in a potential life or death scenario, the other I threw a PFD to before I went over to him. He didn't flip me, since he was calm about the scenario. and waited with him for the LG's to come.. never did find out how that guy managed to swim out a half mile and get disoriented, but I may well have saved his life..

@@werftv4580 What a tremendous story! The fact that you had the extra PFD that you were able to give to that swimmer blows my mind. I will definitely be thinking of what safety measures I can carry for myself and now for others as well. Thank you ☺️

With my new kayak, all the gear (rods, reels, fish finder, etc) is stored inside the kayak, which eliminates “yard sales” when traveling through the surf zone. However, I once had a very poorly executed surf launch in my older Hobie Revolution 13 where the kayak flipped in very shallow water! My rods were all stored vertically in my Hobie H-Crate. Long story short, three out of four rods snapped in two, because they got completely folded over when the kayak rolled! That was a very expensive lesson for sure!🎣😲

Yikes! As I was reading i was hoping it didn't end in broken rods. :( What would you do differently? Store the rods flat?

This is a great video Roman. That first tip regarding developing a ritual is crucial. That is applicable to all types of fishing. I have a ritual for fishing on my boat that makes it so much easier to get out on the water. It's interesting how the ritual will change over time and it's nice to try and streamline and downsize the routine to try and make getting out there more efficient.
@RomanCastroVlog
@RomanCastroVlog 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The initial ritual sets it all out there so it can be analyzed and improved upon. I can be on the water with my kayak 20 minutes from when I get the green flag. :) I also have a ritual for diving. It's key. It helps get my mind and body ready for breath holding.

These are all really great tips, especially the ones about safety. I never realized just how fast those jet skis are until my 1st weekend in my kayak in MB😂. From my experience over the past few weeks I would also add to this list a light source for after sunset, a pee bottle, and a small towel.

Do use common sense! Assume that other boaters do not see you. Carry an air horn and a whistle as a back up. Every safety device needs a back up. Electronic navigation aids like fish finder/gps/chartplotter needs a backup, like a handheld gps. A handheld vhf DSC gps transceiver can save your life. I have a Standard Horizon HX890. Do not go cheap on a radio, how much is your life worth? Back it up with a personal locator beacon or an EPIRB. Make sure you register them so if/when you need assistance, they know who they are looking for and what type of vessel you are in. Do buy your electronics from an authorized dealer so your warranty will be recognized. If you buy them off of e-bay or Amazon, the company may consider you the second buyer and not honor the warranty. Do have a white light on your vessel that is visible above your head when seated, and that it has 360° visibility, and is capable of being seen 2 nautical miles. You may not plan on being out at night, but sometimes things happen. You could hook a big fish and it brings you out further than you realize and it starts getting dark on your way back. You want and need to be seen. Do have a kayak buddy. Don't yak alone, your life may depend on it. Do learn how to re-enter your vessel if you capsize. There are commercial aids that when used can help you re-enter your kayak. I think it is called a kayak step or something like that. I think it is a short rope ladder. Do practice flipping and re-entering your kayak in a protected body of water. Do carry a tow rope. Do carry extra flotation. Pool noodles are very light and very buoyant, stuff a few into your hatch, maybe have one on deck. Attach pieces of pool noodles to your rod and reel combos. If you are going to anchor your vessel, use a trolley, have more than enough line to reach bottom because you need to put scope on the line. Scope is a fancy way of saying that the line needs to be at an angle and not straight up and down. 1/4" line is all you need and you can carry quite a bit. Do have a buoy on the anchor line between the anchor and your vessel. Six to eight feet should be fine between the buoy and the vessel. (I use a boat fender as a buoy.) Do not tie off directly to the anchor. Do use a zig zag cleat, you may need to get off of the anchor quickly. (If you are using a buoy, you won't lose your anchor rode and line.) An anchor retrieval ball is not a must, but is a good idea because you won't be leaning to pull the anchor up from depth. You back the kayak up and it slides down the line and dislodges your anchor from the bottom. Keep backing up until the anchor is hanging on the ball and won't drop back down. Retrieve your anchor line. Do have a flag. Do have 3 handheld daytime/nightime flares and a flare gun with aerial flares. Do make sure that they are current and not expired. Have fun and be safe!
