12 minutes of useless information on Pit of Heresy

Ahh, my Pit of Heresy obsession is finally challenged. Long comment. Another tip regarding #1 sword blocking, you can phoenix dive at the start, then quickly swap your subclass twice (twice if you want to go back to Solar of course) to fall even faster because only Solar has Phoenix dive which gets canceled if you swap subclass so you get boosted vertically, giving you an even bigger momentum with the sword block technique. Emailing bungie regarding inspiration does not work, I've actually done the same regarding some other content and another game from 1997 but no answer, even though I can see clear resemblance and inspiration taken from this niche game, which considering is one of my all time favorites I don't mind, but one day I will definitely extract that information from one of bungie's level designers, I am 100% sure they were inspired by that game. Regarding seeing the boss arena from necropolis, you can also hear the breathing from Zulmak all the way up there, speaking of which I am not sure if it's some mandela effect but I swear you could hear it from Sorrow's Harbor too lol. Now some truly useless information that you either didn't know or didn't mention: Wiping during Necropolis encounter will not respawn you at the original banner location like every encounter does, instead it spawns you at the tower to the left of the original banner, with a brand new banner circle at that tower, however the original banner circle remains and does work, so this is essentially the only encounter in the game with 2 rallying locations. Also the rallying circle at the tower is not there initially, it only appears if you wipe. You can also rally both of them, so rally one of them, skate around (without starting the encounter), fail a well skate, oh well, rally the other location and continue. The elevator also does not work in this tower so you'll have to get creative if you want to climb up. This tower and the Apocaliptic Blade one are the only 2 towers from what I remember where elevators do not work lol. Speaking of Necropolis, the ''air space'' in it has some of the most inconsistent turn back zones and death barriers in the game, if not the most, I've experimented with a lot of flying and skating trying various oobs and climbs, and it's so inconsistent, they're also incredibly strict, it's like bungie really didn't want you getting out of that cave lol. During Chamber of Suffering encounter, when the Boomer Hive knights start spawning on the 2 balconies, for some reason and I have not figured out yet why, is it a dmg threshold or something, if you shoot say with a sniper, the knight that spawns on the right balcony, the knight will for some weird reason instantly teleport to the left balcony. That's an interesting and unique oob to skip Maze, you however have an oob behind one of the towers in Necropolis which leads to Chamber. Also, which is not much of a secret but I see you have not mentioned, if you got followed to close by the Ogres upon dunking the 3rd orb in the maze, and then you swiftly start the encounter before waiting for them to despawn, they will stay throughout the entire encounter, and from personal experience even completing the encounter will not despawn them. Fun fact regarding Pit of Heresy speedruns, they're hard to beat and annoying to attempt because they're reliant on pure rng, you want 3 specific towers in Necropolis for ideal time, which is not the problem itself, but the tricky part is getting the perfect 3 symbols for Wizard maze that you can skip with those pockets you've demonstrated. For necropolis the best 3 is the Ж looking one, Burger/Euro, Sandwich, this allows you to linearly do all 3 then just Well skate to the central tower to proceed to the maze. For Wizard maze the 3 is Ж looking one with the dot, A looking one, and the one that looks like a check mark on a table. You can cancel the heavy with the Hive Sword by standing in the Wizard cloud, attacking and jumping, the dps is significantly improved. Regarding the big Crystal at Zulmak, there is also a a big crystal at Crota's that you walk up to to start the encounter, could just be Hive entities like big shiny minerals. There's probably more that I either can't think of or am yet to discover, I'll load up Pit of Heresy occasionally and just explore looking for new things, the only thing I didn't know from your video is that Zulmak was the 4th to wield his sword. I really wish I could replay this dungeon for the first time again, it solidified itself as the best content then and having played everything this game has to offer after that I still consider it the best content in the game, perfect location, perfect atmosphere, ost, best Hive fraction, simple and fun mechanics, and importantly, not a boring drag like recent dungeons, it's simply the best.

The only one of these I wasn’t aware of was zulmaks breathing from necropolis which may be because I don’t play with sound on…. If you wipe in the ogre section that also causes them to not despawn which is why all speedruns have ogres there. The oob they showed is the fastest way to skip the ogre section if you don't want to do it (you can complete the dungeon faster if you do ogres but not everyone wants to deal with them not despawning when you get to totems).

Excision is also an encounter with 2 rally points, though using one removes the other. Also one more for you, I do believe that Pit of Heresy is the only dungeon in the game with an actual wipe mechanic, in the Annihilation Totem. All other dungeons use only death mechanics, but none that will wipe your whole team simultaneously.

I used to be really well versed on the lore of Pit of Heresy, so there’s a couple things I can add. The Osmium King died eons ago: Oryx took the Osmium Throne for himself, and when he died and Crota was no longer around to presumably take his seat, the Throne lay empty. The Xenophage boss being of Savathun’s Brood is possibly a reference to her meddling with the Hive on the Moon at this time. The Scarlet Brood’s entire creation is essentially due to Savathun’s whispers in the ears of certain Hive. The boss’s subtitle, “the Tempted,” may indicate this particular Hive was fully swayed into her service. Speaking of Savathun, every action taken by the Hidden Swarm were manipulated by Savathun in order to feed us power. Everything from constructing the Scarlet Keep, to hosting the death games in the Pit, to committing heresy through necromancy, was all done primarily so the Guardian could kill Zulmak and grow in the Sword Logic. And with hindsight, presumably to lure the Guardian to the Lunar Pyramid and catalyze our preparation for the Black Fleet. Zulmak’s giant green crystal could potentially be necromancy related. Zulmak is canonically raised repeatedly through heretical necromancy - hence the name Pit of Heresy - similar in nature to the works of Nokris. It could be a large chunk of crystallized Soulfire, which is utilized in Hive rituals and presumably also in necromancy.

11:19 the green crystal contains the nightmare energies Voshyr and Kynox collected from the Altar of Sorrow. You can see the same crystal in the AoS event as well. They used the nightmare energy to resurrect Zulmak.

Did you know that the strange written text scattered around the dungeon is actually a reference to Dark Souls messages and I think that's why this dungeon has such a focus on melee combat and also why the Apocalyptic Blade spawns in as a surprise behind you when you read that message on the tower. Also in typical Fromsoft fashion, you're able to see the end area, in this case the final boss arena, from the start.

This video is the reason my fireteam have elected to speedrun Pit for our next dungeon. We've already done sub 12 minute runs of Proph and Shattered. One of them sent me this and those Harrow maze shortcuts make the place trivial. I now have the route to all 6 symbols in my muscle memory and I can do a circuit of the six in about a minute. The oob to Totem encounter is also top tier stuff.

The hidden swarm faction consists of members from crotas old faction as well as savathuns which woukd explain the wizard. Kelgorath was actually a member of the hidden swarm but after he found out savathun had turned against the other hive, he removed the red from himself and joined xivu arath. Savathun actually built the scarlet keep for her relatives as a way to bait us to go and get rid of them.

I have always been convinced Pit is a massive Crota's End homage/reference: 1) Going down a huge pit into the Dark Below 2) The Ogres having the same "run away" vibe as the Abyss 3) An encounter with an Annihilator Totem and a bunch of Knights to kill like Bridge 4) Witches (sometimes even protected by Shriekers) referencing Deathsinger 5) Zulmak is of course Fire Crota complete with his own green Crota crystal and his own big sword 6) The obvious lore ties considering Omar Agah's "presence" and the whole dungeon being the work of Crota's daughters And finally, of course, the emphasis on special swords

It's here! YIPPIE!!! This is so good. Also very interesting stuff. I really like this dungeon. Also I never bothered to get the Lorbooks back then, so I always wondered why you could go there in the first place collection of what i didn't know before (god damn I love to know this stuff) 1. the secret knight at the start 2. The OOB in Ogre maze 3. The little pathways at Witch maze. I never noticed The rest I actually knew about. For the crystals, they are often implied to be some sort of vessel for corrupted light (like shown in the Savathûns Song Strike). However while that could be an idea, for Shattered Throne the crystals are definetly a powersource or catalyst since they give the Darkblades a shield. For Zulmak though, I think he is guardian the crystal itself, since it explodes once he dies and it never really shows us that it has direct power over something. Although it could also be something against him, since the circle where the power of the crystal is held is the only place Zulmak can be damaged from. So probably also some sort of catalyst. This implying that once Zulmak dies the crystal also goes down because it used his power as a catalyst to make it more powerful, or he used it as a power source to become more powerful, but since they were linked it shattered Crystals and Hive have always been kinda weird, especially since they often use the same models

The secret knight is such a deep cut since I’ve only ever found 1 KZbin video that mentions him and it’s from 4-5 years ago and only has 5k views. Ogre maze oob is pretty helpful when I’m doing casual runs and just want to skip the encounter. And I love the pathways in witch maze they make it feel so rewarding for learning the encounter

Love the video. One small correction though. Unless something changed since the dungeon came out, the relic sword super actually can damage shriekers in the final boss encounter. But you have to basically be on top of them. Maybe slightly off set so the sword part comes down right on top? It's been so long I don't remember exactly, but I do remember it was really finicky sometimes. I know that because the first time one of my best friends and I did the dungeon, we didn't know you could reflect the shots by guarding, so our dumb selves used nothing but supers for every. single. oracle. And because of the light level of the dungeon back then, it took a REALLY long time. We would take turns trading aggro so the other guy could run in without getting melted, jump over the shrieker, and use the super. And then later I saw someone solo the dungeon killing them the intended way, and I sent it to my friend saying "Bro, we are idiots"

After you clear the ogre maze, but before beginning the chamber of suffering encounter, you can go back into the maze and the orb dropping hive knights will continue to spawn in. Sometimes you have to wait a minute. Have everyone in the team grab an orb and start the next encounter. You can rally the banner without losing your orb. Dunk those three orbs and the chamber starts half finished. The fight goes from 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds and I don't know that it saves you any time overall. It just feels like you're getting away with something.

Someone who loves Pit as much as me. 🤜🤛 I've been actively (on and off) going for the Hunter speedrun WR for a number of months. RNG is a nightmare, and after the -5 change the Hive swords do significantly less damage, which is shit (though I've only been in there once since Final Shape. Been busy. And there's been the surge change).

The problem with newer dungeons (maybe I just haven’t done it enough) is that all the secrets aren’t really secret since everything is seemingly tied to a triumph or has been talked about 8 gazillion times already so there isn’t much unknown info to share. Regardless I could try it, it is my third favorite dungeon so I wouldn’t be opposed to running it a bunch to explore

My personal theory regarding those big crystals is that they act as some sort of conduit or battery for tithes/souls. We know that every Hive has to send their tithes up the proverbial pyramid, so it makes sense that high ranking Hive would have the need to store tithes to be sent off to the Ascendant plane. It’s been a hot minute since I last read the PoH lore, but I don’t think Zulmak was Ascendant, just particularly strong. Also, back in D1, when we fight Crota in the campaign, his wizards summon him from the Ascendant plane. And what is it that they use as a conduit for Crota’s Ascendant soul? A massive crystal!

They need to do something with Pit of Heresy. I don't know,like add maybe all the seasonal Season of the Witch weapons and armour into its lootpool so you can play the dungeon to get the Witch weapons more straight forward and maybe also make it where the Hymns of Desecration give guaranteed red borders or high stat armours,especially useful for weeks when you wanna get a red border but the dungeon isn't farmable since those Hymns drop from a weekly bounty.

Hey PoHE I noticed you left this out or maybe you weren’t aware, but after the oger maze, before starting the next encounter if you got to the 4th knights room that you avoided it will be there and still drop its purple orb and it’s applicable to the next encounter, another tidbit is if you stand in the rooms you killed the first three knights in they will respawn after a short period, upon killing will drop the orbs again and they are applicable I’ve gotten 4 orbs instantly put in on 3rd encounter but be careful, ads will stack up like nobody’s business, I loved the video POH is my favorite dungeon and I knew a decent amount but still learned some interesting facts from the video, please include in deep cuts I’d like to think I left a mark!

Fun fact: the shriekers CAN be hit by the super, or at least were at some point. Me and my friends actually had thought swords were so underwhelming back then, so we didn’t actually know that swords could block. We thought we were Brute-forcing some mechanic, but no, we were just dumb

I wish world first dungeon races were a thing, it doesn’t have to be something large like a Twitch Rivals raid race but a small mini event like maybe contest mode dungeons for the first 24 hours and you get a cool emblem at the end and a guaranteed exotic at the end. So I went in blind and solo when I first did Pit and didn't realize until after I finished it and talked to a friend that you're supposed to block the shriekers to kill them. What I found instead was that if you stand on top of them and use the super it'll damage them. And that's how I did it. For both 1st and final encounters. 😂
