Insulation wise, when my daughter and I were homeless and lived in various tents for 19 months we used closed cell foam mechanics mats which were 10mm thick. They're cheap, hard wearing, supportive clean up well, lightweight, waterproof and provided good insulation. Just thought I'd put that out there as it may help someone.

Great tip, I've not considered them but have used them at work. We also use one as a sled in the winter. Thanks for the comment and for watching

We have a variety of no-see-ums where I live. The get through my camper screens too. My girlfriend came up with the idea of spraying on the bug repellent you put on your skin. I was concerned it would dissolve the fabric, but it didn't. It worked! The no-see-ums stopped coming in! 😀

You might try permethrin, it's made to put on materials.

Well thought out set up Mike and very good review of the roof tent. I have always appreciated your honest approach to what works and what doesn't, and why. I also like the way you offer suggestions for improvement. It's nice to see you enjoying the outdoors again and the Jeep out of the garage and in the woods.

Well I guess it IS your holiday too - just watch the accuracy of those PSI limits you don't need to explain any injuries even if they are short term!! The diesel heater has been such a game changer for winter camping. Thanks for the info and laughs!

Waiting for you new videos is such a treat!! You have inspired me to get jeep and to start working on cars. a year ago I didn't know how to change oil on my car. A week ago I took my engine apart and replaced valves easily. Now I am a proud owner of 1997 jeep xj rock crawler but thanks to you I am heading in direction of building slowly expedition overlander, just like you do. The only difference is that I have inline 6, 4liter and it is in horrible shape but luckily no rust since the car was in dry climate of Colorado. Cheers Mike!

Nice looking tent, id love to get one, but its out of the budjet. Im also just wary of adding things that'll decrease my aerodynamics. My truck is our long haul trip vehicle far more often than a camping vehicle. Maybe when i retire 🤣

Two questions, Mike: if this tent didn't exist, what are other contenders that have caught your eye? And what jacket are you wearing at 16:41 ? It is so cool.

Can I please ask what solar panels you are using and any information on how you got the flush mounted like that?

Super interesting review. Did you consider using a Thermarest "self-inflating" pad for the bottom insulation layer? I know self-inflating pads don't really self-inflate, but they seem to offer slightly higher R-values for a given thickness than the newer NeoAir pads as long as weight isn't a consideration.

Put one twist in your straps they'll quit vibrating in the wind.

Where do you get the hardware to mount solar panels?
@WorkshoptoWilderness

I made it. Roof rails come with the tent so I adapted them and drilled and bolted the panels on.

My wife and I have been shopping for a roof top tent. I really like the features this Wildland Desert Cruiser offers. We want to be able to swap it back and forth between our XJ and truck. This one may fit the bill. Thanks for the in depth review! Super nice rig btw!

Very good review especially as I am considering purchasing a roof tent for my Lada Niva. A question about Samantha, wouldn't 5 PSI allow for a better grip during those hot sweaty slippery silicone Swedish nights - asking for a friend. 🙄😊😉👍

I don't understand when he says it has no floor?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 4 ай бұрын
There isn't a solid base under the tent material. It's just 10 aliminium bars going across like on a bed frame. If you didn't have a solid mattress, then your feed could go through the gaps and touch the roof of the jeep.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness seems a bit weird? Still I suppose a bit of plywood could prevent that. Thanks
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 4 ай бұрын
@insidethevelvetglove3919 I used some thin wood. It's for weight saving, but it strangely helps dry out the tent as no snow or water can get underneath the material.
