The ending to this movie was quite sad for being such an old anime and based on the Mario-franchise of all things, it is quite amazing the way they managed to put together the story without beating on the characters. Especially the way the way they handled Bowser is quite good considering that none of the characters in the older games are speaking at all. And the music is just breathtaking for an anime this old, just listen.

You know what really makes me feel like this wasn't the originally intended ending? In Japanese, besides Haru barely saying anything in that last scene when they're saying goodbye, Peach says very specifically that she will be lonely without Mario being there. (For those who don't know, 寂しい sabishii can mean sad, but it has a connotation of a feeling of being lonely). And yet Haru is there. (This isn't just advertisement, but I made a video on my channel for those who wanted a somewhat happier ending.)

Thing is, Mario's a genuine good guy. Even if he didn't get the girl, he still helped other people who needed help. He saved a kingdom, rescued Peach and the Toads, and helped turn Haru back to normal. I think that, for an all-around good guy like Mario, that still counts for something. Not that he wouldn't have liked Peach to return his feelings, of course. But I don't think Mario's the kind of guy who'd only help someone if he had the chance of getting with them.

happy mario day!!! :3(hope we get more nintendo animations like this, star fox:the battle begins,kirby right back at ya,the pikmin & kid icarus shorts.) love the scenes it plays in as it describes mario even now so well: a guy who saves out of caring love for others that other nintendo heroes like fox mcloud,kirby,samus,pit (especially when it comes to palutena.:3),marth,olimar, and others like terry bogard(love his friendliness towards blue mary,andy,joe,kyo,ryo,mai shiranui & his adopted son rock howard.),bayonetta(who has cereza,jeanne,is playful with luka knowing he'll outlive him and doesn't harm innocents/despite her dark look is very friendly when given respect.:3),ryu(like in the animated movie when he helps the little calcutta girl and doesn't hurt ken at all when he's brainwashed fighting and defeating m. bison alongside his best friend/the bromance throughout the movie.)& even mario's old rival/friend sonic(his moments being like a brother to tails being my favorite in the entire series.) have followed in his footsteps in their own ways. while staying who he was throughout it all(he accepts princess peach having a fiance holding no jealousy or regret/game wise doesn't take advantage of her royalty or consider living with her and even lets bowser work at the grocery store at the end holding no grudge for his actions with how sympathetic koopa is in the movie.) with how nintendo themselves stated peach doesn't view herself as protected by mario i can see why in the ending as they're just as happy being loving friends than being married with mario & luigi leaving the kingdom for home knowing their new friends they had a grand adventure with are happy with nothing saying they couldn't go back to it someday.

In the end, Mario actually got Peach. But in Super Mario 64, he found the pipe again and came back. And to this day, he has met a lot of individuals in the Mushroom Kingdom and still loves Peach, and he, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and the Toads still go on adventures until Nintendo's bankruptcy.
