Christmas growing up in the 50's/60's was family oriented with us. Driving around to see the lights, visiting friends and family, helping to decorate, grandparents sleeping over, Christmas mass ( midnight mass when we got old enough) and a nice family dinner.

My husband and I are in our mid 60's, our kids are grown and on their own, but my husband still decorates the front yard, we still have a fully decorated live Christmas tree, I make Christmas cookies, we exchange homemade Christmas cakes and cookies with our neighbors, we get the grandkids and great grandkids in the living room and watch the Christmas movies and after The Polar Express goes off, it's bedtime. In the morning, I set out snack trays, we open the presents, and I start cooking Christmas dinner, our 3-year-old great grandson lays on the living room floor and watches the Christmas train go around for hours. After dinner, my husband starts a fire, and the kids' roast marshmallows and drink hot cocoa. The morning after Christmas, while everyone is getting ready to leave, I make our traditional breakfast of green eggs and ham, elf shaped chocolate chip pancakes and waffles, then everyone goes home, our middle and younger daughters and their families live 6 hours from us and our oldest granddaughter and her family live 3 hours from us. Then our oldest granddaughter and her family come back out for New Years and spend 3 to 4 days with us depending on their work schedules.

Does anyone remember making a Christmas tree out of a Reader's Digest magazine? Page by page, you'd fold the top page corner down to meet the spine, then the bottom corner up to meet the folded corner. When you were finished with the entire magazine, you'd fan it out, and it was a fantastic Christmas tree. Then spray paint it in colors, add glitter... They were great 👍.

One of my favourite things at Christmas was sending and receiving cards, however the price of stamps is what stopped me and a lot of our friends. It is ridiculous how expensive it is to send a card. 😢😢

I was born in the late 50's and growing up in the 60's and 70's, people were friendlier, specially around the holiday's . I remember the family would get in the car and go to each relatives home. Also, I miss going downtown and see the Christmas window displays. I remember the silver christmas tree, my folks would put that up in the living room window with the color wheel. It's really a shame that Christmas has lost its true meaning.

Thanks for all of the memories! High postage rates (currently .73) has almost totally killed sending Christmas Cards, and nice cards are expensive! Never cared for hot Dr Pepper, flat tasting, reminded me of cough syrup! But still set table with fine China, my mothers favorite footed gold band glasses, and silverware all over 70 years old usually on a lace tablecloth over a red or maroon one. No family left so the chairs around the beautifully set table in front of the wood burning dining room fireplace, Christmas music softly playing in background are all vacant, Just do it for my own enjoyment & to keep memories alive!

I remember most of these traditions. We had a real fireplace and grandma had an aluminum tree. Life is so impersonal now; you see people in restaurants on their phones instead of real conversation...small talk is becoming a lost art. Life is too complicated I feel and you only see people you know at weddings and funerals.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. The animated store windows were amazing! I remember bundling up to go down town to see one store’s corner window that was always magic. Downtown businesses had huge Christmas displays and to drive around downtown to see all the lights was a thing a lot of people did. Christmas dinner was always a spectacular event. The table was always stunning. Many people don’t even own good dishes anymore. As far as Christmas cards go, I still send them, but I don’t get many back. It is also hard to find really pretty Christmas cards anymore with glitter on them. I have to hunt for them every year, but even the ones I can find, are not as pretty as the ones from the 50’s and 60’s.

I remember the silver tree with the colored spin wheel lol. Never heard of the cardboard fireplace or warm Dr. Pepper with lemon. My grandson once asked me if I had the chance to go back in time or the future what would I choose? No hesitation Go Back in Time!! Kids today will never know the Christmas we loved. Too commercialized and overpriced. I decorated the tree with popcorn and a strand of garland made with strips of colored construction paper. Beautiful wrapped boxes with bows. Now it’s bags. Cards filled the mailbox with handwritten notes. Now it’s text messages. The house had all the delicious smells of turkey or ham cooking all day. There was a tray of homemade cookies on every table. Yes I choose to go back in time. 😔🙏🏼❤️🎄🎅🏻

The two traditions that I don't think should come back (for many different reasons): 1.) The Grab Bag - There is a major problem with gift-givers buying thoughtless and meaningless presents and that contributes to the problem. 2.) Christmas Clubs - There is more to Christmas than spending money and credit. Those are both very middle class ideas AKA the people that put money before community and family.

I think you need to delete all the videos on this channel and start over. It really is your civic duty, it's not fair that things like Christmas traditions have much less of a chance to come back because of such poor representation. @@AmericanVintageLifestyle-h6c For starters, you are being dishonest by pretending to be "kindly"...you can replace that word with self-interested. And you are pretending to not know what I am talking about...which goes back to the dishonesty part. Even if you were trying to understand, which you are not, you wouldn't act any differently if you knew that you were toxic to everyone around you. That's what selfish and self-interested people do, they are obsessed with themselves and would rather not know how their selfishness is affecting others. So dishonesty, obsessive self-interest, selfishness, and lack of empathy are your character traits...which are not really values but just symptoms of obsessive self-interest. You need to look up the word values so you don't have to pretend that you are trying to understand. You won't be motivated to fool yourself like you try to fool everyone else.
