Was Nikola Tesla from Croatia? Did Brac stone build the White House? Did football originate in Dalmatia (it's coming home), and was the Republic of Dubrovnik really the first state to recognise the USA? 12 oft-quoted 'facts' about Croatia. Are they true, partially true, or false?

Thank you for clip. Being Croatian, I didn't know that football originated in Croatia - but this could explain why Croatians are one of best soccer nations and by far the most successful small nation in that sport 🙂 Quote from Wikipedia indicate that Brac's stone could be used in renovations of White house: "There are conflicting claims as to where the sandstone used in the construction of the White House originated. Some reports suggest sandstone from the Croatian island of Brač, specifically the Pučišća quarry whose stone was used to build the ancient Diocletian's Palace in Split, was used in the building's original construction. However, researchers believe limestone from the island was used in the 1902 renovations and not the original construction. "

Great video Paul. I'm not sure why to get into technicalities with Tesla's birthplace, as he himself had stated that he was born in "Croatia". People don't go into legal technicalities in such questions. No one today as well would say that he was born in "Republic of Croatia", nor anyone would say that he/she was born in UNPA zone. However, to be precise... Tesla was born in Croatian Military Frontier which was a part of Kingdom of Croatia which was a part of Austrian Empire. So technically he was born in Kingdom of Croatia, of course not in the Republic of Croatia which was established some 33 years ago. Although it's also true that the Republic of Croatia in its constitution names the Kingdom of Croatia as it's predecessor. I'm not sure why this even is in dispute between Serbs and Croats. I would imagine that Austrians and Hungarians would dispute which territories belonged to which kingdom within Austrian Empire. It's kind of funny that some people in Serbia, when they can't have Tesla being born in Serbia, would rather have Austrian Empire as his birthplace or even "Military Frontier" , of course, then "Croatian" is ominously omitted from the name of the Military Frontier when claiming that it "has nothing to do with Croats". I personally find the whole situation hilarious. :)

Nikola Tesla was born in 1858 in the "Croatian Military Frontier" (German: Kroatische Militärgrenze), Austrian Empire. From my understanding Tesla was not a "Serb" instead his ancestors were Orthodox Vlach settlers who were allowed to settle in Croatia by the Austrians under the Austrian "Statuta Valachorum" ( Vlach Statutes ) which were enacted on the 5th of October 1630 AD.

Austrians invited orthodox Christians who were oppressed under the Ottoman occupation to come and live in the Croatia several times during that time period. All kinds of Orthodox Christians came, but the Serbs were the most numerous, and the Serbian church was the most influential in the area so that over time through assimilation and intermarrying all the Orthodox Christians in the area became Serbs. Were some of his ancestors Vlachs? Almost certainly, as well as Croatians, and various other ethnicities, but generally he considered himself to be a Serb, as his father was a priest in the Serbian church.

@@povijestpovijest9569 Like I said my understanding is the Tesla's ancestors were originally Orthodox Vlach settlers from Wallachia (now Romania). They became assimilated "Serbs" in the 19th century. As far as I know Tesla is not a common surname in Serbia, I'm not sure if it really ever existed there.

@@user-pc2jp2yr3c I don't know. But during the 17th century 65 orthodox families moved to Smiljan, out of which 10 were Vlach families. Pavičić S., Seobe i naselja u Lici, 204-205

Your “understanding” is different from Croatians who murdered his relatives and burned down his house twice in 50 years because they “understood” him to be Serbian.

I visited a refugee camp in 1992, during the war, and it was incredible. It was winter, and food was scarce. I went back with my family in 1993, and we loved it. Vegetables were in season and we ate well. The refugees did not eat well. We found the people very friendly and hospitable.

No. Our first night in Croatia, we arrived in this little hamlet, Djakovo, around 2:00 am. We were tired and hungry, so our team leader went out and found us a loaf of bread and some link sausages. We heated the sausages in a pan, cut them up, and ate them on the bread. The next night we walked to a hotel for dinner, and the only thing available were onions, so we ate cooked onions. I lost 15 lbs on this trip, but since the country was still recovering from the war, food was scarce. @@sinisa5567

Interesting video. Your logic was direct evidence = true, the rest = false. Maybe you should also use unknown. 😉For example MP's birthplace is unknown, but Korcula is one of the best candidates along with Constantinople and Soldaia on Azov Sea. On the other hand, you're probably wrong about Ragusa being first state to introduce quarantine. It was only described in detail in Ragusan documents (huge and best-preserved archives in this part of Europe), but something similar existed in other Dalmatian cities too and earlier, preserved as incidental notes in the texts of other topics and was a common practice with every foreign ship. I believe not only on the Adriatic. Keep posting tebra 👍
